I did not enjoy the first step onto Mars, felt anticlimactic.
Also, I'm so tired of Danny being creepy. Leave his ass on Mars.
Also can't wait for Wraith to weigh in on the feasibility of a single ship with 8 engines and two massive solar sails being a single stage.
Although could be worse, the Russian ship simply defies physics 7/8/2022 10:37:22 PM |

I’m actually surprised at how bad they’ve done the physics overall
Definitely seemed like an odd choice to rush the first step scene like that but maybe they’re doing somewhere with it… 7/9/2022 12:10:58 AM |

Solar sails are actually pretty feasible as they have shown them, but the sizes are completely wrong. NEAScout is a current probe that will be launching on Artemis I -- its main mission is asteroid observation, but it will also be using a solar sail for in-space propulsion. The satellite itself is the size of a shoebox and its sail packs up to be a little bit bigger than a smartphone. When unfurled though, it is about the size of a tennis court. The sails themselves are only a few atoms thick, but the key is that they accelerate so slowly that there aren't any substantial loads imparted on the struts holding them out. They seriously accelerate at like 0.1 mm/S^2 for small payloads like this. Perfectly fine for unmanned missions that will be in space for years, going to the outer solar system.
The Soujourner they have here is multiple orders of magnitude larger than a cubesat though, so that would drop that acceleration significantly, probably to the scale of micrometers/S^2 and the sails would need to be way bigger. I think in the show they showed that it would would get them to Mars like 8 days earlier than expected. Not likely on solar pressure alone
The bigger issue is with the ship itself. It looks like the whole thing is landing and taking off from Mars, then injecting into Earth orbit. Doing all of that with the same vehicle just isn't realistic, especially with that many engines. 8 engines means 8 things with millions of moving parts that can break in an environment that we don't have much experience in. On top of that, it puts the entire crew at risk for an initial exploratory mission. The Helios model of sending the small two-manned craft to the surface makes a lot more logistical sense -- that is what we did for the Moon.7/11/2022 4:08:49 PM |
bbehe Burn it all down. 18402 Posts user info edit post |
Oh right, I wasn't saying that sails were bad, but taking them down to Mars and back up again seems nonsensical.
The Russian ship is WAY worse though. It was SSTO with 4 nuclear engines. It was not aerodynamic at all. All the legs and other dangling bits weren't in an aeroshell so would have to been significantly stronger. I'm assuming the nuclear engines would have to be gimbled... The Russian designs haven't made sense since when they sent Buran (WITHOUT ENGINES)to the moon and back. 7/11/2022 4:45:38 PM |
Wraith All American 27257 Posts user info edit post |
^not TOO ridiculous on the Soviet vehicle in terms of aerodynamics. They cut design short by 2 years to compete with NASA and Helios, and they are kind of known for doing things the brute force way (just throw more thrust at it! Screw aerodynamics!). That's kind of what we did with the F-1 engines on Saturn, but obviously not nearly that bad.
But that is just the aero side of things. The concept of sending the ENTIRE VEHICLE to Mars rather than just a small payload is ridiculous. Then landing a vehicle that size on Mars? And launch it from Mars and coming back? The amount of mass you would need for fuel on that would be insane, even if using nuclear engines. 7/12/2022 4:37:57 PM |

Is Kelly gonna get pregnant? Unless they packed birth control pills/condoms...they are gonna be on the surface for like two years so something's gotta give there.
Also lol at how Soviets and Helios were gonna try and keep the whole water thing a secret. Cosmonauts are literally living in the NASA habitat. How did they think they would sneak water to their cosmonauts without the astronauts finding out? 7/16/2022 1:27:24 PM |

I'm assuming they'd send her up with an IUD or implant.
But yeah, the story telling is kinda questionable
Helios sends a ship without knowing where water is, despite needing water for the return trip.
NASA crashes their ship and just says they'll ride home with Helios (which means they will know Helios had found water for fuel generation)
Russia has no vessels and has agreed to work with Helios, while still choosing to live with NASA despite this meaning they'll have to hide research and live in a much smaller habitat. Also, they'll eventually just move in with Helios too on the return ship.
Meanwhile, Danny is living on the mobile hab, which has a metric shiton of drugs, despite the policy that seems to indicate Phoenix is waaaay more equipped for medical rehab.
Also, the ascent vehicle is capable of multiple trips up and down? 7/16/2022 2:08:55 PM |

That part is very unrealistic. The fact that they use it to just fly around between bases is pretty ridiculous too. In order to reuse it, they'd have to have liquid fuel/oxidizer. Which is very heavy, very expensive, and very difficult to store and condition for long durations (especially in a vacuum). In a mission where they hadn't even found their new fuel source yet.7/18/2022 9:57:19 AM |

Ignoring fuel, how realistic would it be for a vessel to be able to sustain multiple reentry attempts with very little maintenance? I know the atmosphere is way thinner, but still seems to be unlikely.
Also curious how many of these ships they brought along. 7/18/2022 12:10:29 PM |
Wraith All American 27257 Posts user info edit post |
^That is the main part that makes it not work. Thermal fatigue would be crazy. Space shuttles had to go through a crazy amount of inspection and maintenance of their tiles before they could be relaunched. There were people whose sole job during the shuttle days was doing this alone, and that doesn't even take into account impacts on other components that would need to be regularly replaced entirely. Mars atmosphere is only ~0.1% that of Earth, but still significant enough to where aeroheating/aerobraking would be considered. 7/18/2022 12:16:33 PM |

spacex is doing fairly rapid reuse of their booster to space and back, i would think that they could in theory design something to do this on Mars 7/19/2022 10:37:58 AM |

^Those are processed by a large specialized team in an Earth based facility with ready access to every tool and material that would be needed. Taking all that with you to Mars (very heavy) on your first time even being there (meaning a lot of unknown unknowns) and turning it around that easily is just not realistic. Maybe in future missions yes, but a single trip down and up (with a redundant capability) would be a lot more believable. 7/19/2022 10:55:16 AM |

Even taking into account physics liberties taken in sci-fi shows, I was still shocked that NASA intended to land their ship on Mars AFTER colliding with the Soviet ship. Also that they continued onward to Mars despite having moderate (serious?) engine damage from the aforementioned collision.
...I still love this show though.

^^^Isn't this a little inevitable when moving well beyond what we've already proven in practice? Sure, I hope Danny dies, but I don't think it's gotten TOO unreasonable such that I can't willingly overlook it. They're unlikely to make a big budget show that's only for aerospace engineers.
