^^what gain? I think he did it to give cover to Manchin and Jones to vote guilty. Supposedly even ppl from Utah are souring towards him, Trumps approval is higher than his. I had heard before that Utahans didn’t like Trump as much because mormons don’t like brash ppl like that but I guess not. He voted against the obstruction charge because Trump did not break any laws while refusing to cooperate. This rolls back to previous points I made regarding how the House should have proceeded with the full investigation, up to and including forcing the Supreme Court to finally decide this nonsensical executive privilege garbage once and for all.
In other words - Trump broke no laws avoiding Congress due to a legitimate legal belief/precedent regarding executive privilege. Because of this, Romney did not consider it obstruction.
But I mean yes, absent the whole charade of having to go through the courts, Trump obstructed Congress' investigation, a role afforded them by the Constitution.

^^^^^ Right. I don't agree--I'm with you--but it's not totally specious reasoning, I suppose.
...but in that light, you have a Republican Senator, from a bright red state, who is a former standard bearer for the party, who explicitly stated that he wanted to find any possible justification for not voting for either charge of impeachment, who conjured such a justification on one of the charges by the narrowest, most convenient logic that still falls within the bounds of straight-faced reason, who STILL felt compelled to vote for the other impeachment charge, against all historical precedent, self-interest, and arguably the interest of his constituents. 2/7/2020 8:21:23 PM |

It's funny how seeing actual examples of genuinely evil people now in the GOP shows you how absurd prior liberal critiques against Republicans were. What's more disappointing is how much of the GOP just fell in line. Romney stood up against it, albeit a bit too late, IMO 4/25/2024 12:13:04 AM |

^^ I'd disagree. What brought us the Republicans of today is Trump, and what brought Trump was Clinton Derangement Syndrome. That's more on Newt Gingrich than anyone else. That's not to say there weren't some shitty Reps then, a la Dantorum, Palin, and Perry. But your average GOPer honestly wasn't that bad. I keep going back and forth on this.
When in college, I always made a point of criticizing Republican politicians and not Republican voters, because I viewed Republican voters as being manipulated and misled by the politicians from their party.
Now, I wonder if that dynamic has shifted and the Republican base is leading the politicians to behave more poorly in order to appease their base or if perhaps it was always that way and Republican politicians' worst behavior has always catered to their base's worst desires.
When pundits talk today about Republican politicians fearing angering Donald Trump, I don't think that's the case at all; I think that Republican politicians fear Trump's supporters. I don't think that Trump would be a threat if it weren't for the potential threat of his voters' actions. 5/2/2024 1:51:04 PM |
aaronburro Sup, B 53062 Posts user info edit post |
I suspect it's a little bit of both, to be honest. Cheeto has certainly manipulated and misled his voters, and in the process, he's managed to get almost complete fealty from them. In some ways, they wanted to be misled, but as he's fed them what they want to hear, he's dug into baser instincts. But, let's be clear, such instincts exist among all of us, namely mistrust of the Other. Cheeto just plays to it more explicitly than others.
Outside of Cheeto, the GOPers from before him were certainly misleading folks at times, too, mainly to protect business interests. But I think they also understood that some norms were important, as they tended to be highly educated folks, alongside their Democratic counterparts. That limited the shenanigans they were willing to engage in.
What's changed is the Tea Party fools coming in, who had little to no respect for norms and just wanted to burn shit down. They were less educated (in general) than their predecessors and didn't comprehend the problems inherent in what they were doing. The Dems did a poor job responding to it and in many instances let themselves be dragged down to these fools' level. And it's led to a spiral in both parties, honestly, where each side allows itself to nominate people more and more ill-suited to the position, due to how ill-suited their opponent is.
Having said that, Cheeto and the Tea Party have changed things, as they have enough clout and resources to primary otherwise reasonable GOPers (if such a thing is possible) who would otherwise resist these baser urges, thereby putting their mindless lackeys in. You've seen it in the J6 situation, where GOP reps knew the claims were bullshit and still signed on to the objections, knowing that they had to show fealty to MAGA at all costs. Conservative media (which is chief among misleading voters) also knows it has to show MAGA fealty, or else go bankrupt.
So, who is really dictating to who at this point? It's hard to say. 5/3/2024 10:02:58 AM |
