So yeah a few weeks ago I logged in, stripped my 60 shaman and 60 mage (both in full epics) DE'ed everything, vendored what I couldnt DE, sent all my gold (about 2k) to guild leader. I also controlled the guild bank so I sent all that crap to her as well. My shaman was rank 12 50% and close to a HoR. Logged out, deleted all my characters. Cancelled my account. Dont really regret it. 7/26/2006 5:27:19 PM |

It amazes me the drastic steps people feel they need to take so they won't go back.
Strike that. It amazes me that people do what Taikimoto do rather than just selling their account and trying to get something out of the time they put into their characters.

It's pretty tough to sell accounts now
I tried selling my hunter that is pretty decked out in tier 1 and tier 2
...
I have to agree on the rushing home to make a raid. It sucks when you rush home to get in a raid and then don't get an invite.
I wasted a whole semester playing WoW 7/26/2006 5:42:07 PM |

I did the same thing as Takimoto, though I didnt have as many epics.
I got a lot out of the time I put into it. It was entertainment, not a job.
Plus in my case I decided I wanted to retain the account in case I get back into it once the expansion hits, but I knew if I had a bunch of 60s and all my friends kept playing, it would be much harder to resist.
Just depends on how you look at the game and the level of self control you have. 7/26/2006 5:43:31 PM |

Your right, I could have been an asshat and sold all the characters and crap that was on them, but instead I decided to give back what not only I had worked on but also all the people in my guild had helped me get. I bet they appreciated seeing 2k and like 30 nexus in their possesion rather than me just selling off the accounts, especially the 50k gold worth of stuff on the bank character.7/26/2006 6:19:51 PM |

^^^ That doesn't make any sense though. If you sell your account and buy a new one 6 months down line, from an in-game point of view you're at exactly the same place as you are if you just delete everything.

Only if you have a perceived value of it. But considering you're either going to make nothing off it by deleting everything or something off it by selling it for "under its value", I'd still rather sell it.

You obviously should have given back the bank stuff, don't think I'm saying you shouldn't have. Otherwise though, it's you're character, so if nothing else I'd want to recoup the costs of having paid for the game for so long.

I dont smoke and I dont drink, so the 15$ a month to play wow was nothing to me. In fact that was my justification for paying for mmorpgs in the first place. 7/26/2006 6:30:33 PM |

$15 a month isn't much to anyone on this board, but that doesn't mean you see people buying things for $15 a month, every month just to flush them down the toilet when they get bored with them. 7/26/2006 7:42:36 PM |

Dont sound so high and mightly with yourself, Taikimoto. Maybe you could GIVE your character to your guild, like 90% of the other ppl do. Get them to change the pw and pick up the bill and you're done. Now they get the bank (oh, how kind of you to send that btw) and 2 characters they can use in a pinch.
In other news, this remains my favorite Naxx picture. Apparently grouping up was not a good strategy on deathknights .

See, the problem is that they pull that shit on some noob boss in MC, than later on in BWL or AQ40, they try and pull that same shit with a boss that has 2 million + hp and do nothing but waste all their ankhs and force the whole the raid group to run back. 7/27/2006 12:38:33 PM |

Practically, you are right Stein, but what is practical about playing a MMORPG in the first place? It's a huge life sink.

I disagree. It's only a life sink if you let it become one.
In which case, if it does become a life sink, you should at least find way to reap some kind of benefit out of it. 7/27/2006 6:05:08 PM |
Stimwalt All American 15292 Posts user info edit post |
Most people approach MMORPG's knowing that a lot of time will be wasted playing the game. It's par for the course, I don't see how you can disagree with that. Now, if you are just playing the "devil's advocate" and saying that you CAN play it casually and maintain a healthy social life, well fine. But practically speaking, you are being misleading. For the majority of WoW players, if you want to get good at WoW, you have to devote a lot of time which could be better spent being social, or any number of others things. I am well aware that it is possible to play casually, or have several people play on one account, etc... etc... However, the game structure is designed to reward time-sinkers, not casual players. Casual players are weaker, less informed, and less likely to acquire higher level items, which defeats the purpose of the practicality behind trying to get an ubar character to sell online. You see? I'm not saying that it is impractical to sell your account online, instead I'm saying that it doesn't make sense to expect non-casual gamers to share your mentality of selling accounts to make back the money from (lost time/time well spent).
