C'mon guys we need to close the season out with three straight wins. It's time to take basketball seriously. We can get to 7-9 which gets us moving in the right direction to the middle of the conference.

i'm really torn right now. i like the way the team is playing (even though they're losing), and tracy smith isn't nearly as crucial as i expected him to be on this team.

but i also don't think lowe can really turn a corner. hmmm.

Not trying to start some shit, but if we do end up 7-9 and win a few games in the ACCT, I could see Yow letting Sid finish his contract.

Lot of ifs

Oddly reminiscent of UNC's season last year. Roy Williams is a hall of fame coach but he ended up in the shitter with an even more talented team last year.

Maybe, though there were obviously some extenuating circumstances (players who didn't want to be there most notably). Also, the situations are 100% different considering the two titles in five years. A bit more tolerance there.

So two of their 5 recruits didn't really want to be there. So the fuck what. They still had 3 elite players who were 100% committed to playing at UNC. They also had Ed Davis, Tyler Zeller, Will Graves, Deon Thompson and Marcus Ginyard coming off the bench none of which was less that a 4* recruit.
That team was way the fuck more talented than this years NCSU team and a hall of fame coach who had just won two titles in a five year span couldn't get shit out of it. Sometimes there is more to it than coaching.

I appreciate the underlying message of what you are trying to do here, but that's just a weak ass argument.

Trying to draw parallels between UNC's and our program is about the worst idea ever. Know your audience.

^the logic in my parallel is solid, refute it if you can. Just saying "you shouldn't draw parallels because of the audience" is the very definition of a "weak ass argument".

^^ You go ahead and continue to compare our situation to UNC's last year. I'll be interested to see how many on this board buy that trifle. I'm guessing ^ one.

That argument only works if you have had sustained success in the past and had "one bad year" that was a fluke. Our situation is no fluke, adder.

i believe those rumors started after people were complaining about gary's recruiting. there was an instance where maryland was recruiting kendall marshall and the marshall family basically felt like maryland didn't really care that much because he would just send his assistants to talk to them and that the whole process wasn't handled very professionally. there were a few other recruits that he let get away that people were getting mad about, so a lot of the fans have been calling for his head for a while.

You really have no understanding of the argument presented. I presented a factual situation in which a HOF coach experienced similar results with a higher level of talent. This was presented simply to point out that it might not be coaching (as it obviously wasn't in UNC's case). With this statement I am not making any assertion about Sidney Lowe's abilities as a coach (IF i was your response of "CHAMPIONSHIPS" would actually be relevant). I am simply presenting a very relevant example of how other factors outside of coaching can be more relevant towards the outcome of a given season.

last year's failure of a UNC team was definitely partly due to coaching. Roy did a terrible job with what he had.

Here would be the excuses for Lowe on those players:

Davis - Sitting on the bench for committing an NCAA Violation. Not Sidney's fault
Zeller - OMG IF ONLY HE WASNT INJURED WE WOULD HAVE WON ALL OUR GAMES
Graves - high all the time, not sidney's fault
Thompson - Didn't show up his senior year, not sidney's fault
Ginyard - Shitty player, not sidney's fault

oh and don't forget...

Larry Drew II - Worst point guard in the history of basketball, how is sidney supposed to win in college without a point guard?!?!

For Roy he just fucked up. That's all there is to it. He came back this season and is 11-2 in the ACC

relevant to the discussion at all??

So far the only one of you even attempted to respond to my statement of "sometimes there is more to it than coaching". The premise of that response? Roy Williams magically forgot how to coach last year and suddenly remembered how to again this year. Real great job on that one...

I think Zeller being injured last year for UNC was HUGE. Henson was more raw than Leslie was a freshmen. That UNC team has a decent shot at making the tourney with Zeller playing the whole year. That's pretty much us without Tracy for the whole year.

That is bullshit. Zellar played 27 games for UNC last year. Tracy Smith has played 17 games this year (so far). Don't forget they also had the services of Ed Davis (played 23 games and averaged 13 and 10) and Deon Thompson (14 and 7).

A far more talented team had similar results with a HOF coach to deny how the situation could be comparable is idiotic. Really it simply comes down to.

That would be pretty much irrelevant to the entire premise of the discussion considering the discussion was spawned from this statement.

A Hall of Fame coach getting about the same results, with superior talent, in the same fucking conference, is very good support for my statement.

the other important thing is that most people would tolerate one bad year, or even a couple, but the fact is that unfortunately lowe has not produced anything yet. every coach will get the benefit of the doubt for one or two bad years, but only if they have shown success before those years. i mean, it's true, we can always give sid one more year to see if he can develop this talent, but he hasn't really shown the ability to pull it together so far.

i like him, but there is a difference between roy and sid.

I'm honestly not even sure what kind of post would satisfy him with the current discussion. Is anyone even trying to make a referendum on Lowe based on one season? Has anyone done that the entire five years even once?

Does he want to simply hear, "maybe coaching isn't the reason we have been a disappointment in this season, year five under Sidney Lowe?"

Nor would I. Getting hot for a few games in a row is honestly no more/less of an accomplishment than Herb's "NCAA streak."

I also wouldn't mind if he stayed around after that, either.

0 tourney appearances in his first 5 years

although people will tell you they are totally different circumstances!! Sid doesn't deserve the same amount of time as Herb because Herb > Les! And he went to Carnegie Mellon not some internet school!

honestly though, Sid did inherit a better team than Herb, I'm not gonna lie

however, the people who like to remind us of that fact also act like expectations were the same...when we hired Herb, we had zero expectations...when we hired Lowe, we had expectations of being able to hire Calipari and Barnes...not the same circumstances is right

At no point was I making a statement about anything but this season. I have said many times 5 years is enough and if Yow decides to make a coaching search at the end of the year I am ok with it. However it would be entertaining if he was allowed to finish his contract just to see all the gnashing of teeth and wailing.
