Most of the are adding people to things (elections boards for instance - was three people per county with two from governors party and new law would have four so two and two) in order to prevent a democratic majority.

Really, really shady but unfortunately not much legally that can be done from what I can tell.

Have these been completely partisan? I've read these bills have bi-partisan support.

definitely not surprised that you would think that, but no, only the disaster relief bill had bipartisan support

"? Senate Bill 4: The Elections and Ethics Enforcement Act concerns elections, ethics and lobbying oversight, appellate court and the Industrial Commission. It passed two Senate committees and was approved by the full chamber along party lines. The bill was sent to the House.

? House Bill 17: Limits the power of appointments that the governor has. Requires the legislature approve the governor’s Cabinet officials. The bill includes several education provisions, including transferring the administration of public schools and the state Department of Public Instruction from the State Board of Education to the state schools superintendent. The bill cleared a committee and was sent to the floor, where it passed after lengthy debate."

So just to be clear here, you're abandoning your ridiculous "HB117 [sic] received bipartisan support" argument, in favor of asking why Democrats won't vote YES on a bill which strips their incoming Democratic governor of power?

Maybe Dems felt they needed more time to digest the bill, consult with their constituencies, etc. You know, because the GOP wrote it behind closed doors with no consultation, filed it on 12/14 at 7pm and passed it on 12/16 at 9am (or sometime this morning).

Repealing HB2 tomorrow allegedly, though only after Charlotte repealed their anti-discrimination bill.

Honestly not sure if this is a victory or not. All it does is reinforce to the GOP that if they bully individual cities/communities with over-the-top legislation that they'll get what they want eventually.

To be fair - Charlotte has a clause to have the city ordinance go back into effect if HB2 is not repealed in it's entirety by Dec. 31.

And as HB2 also limited cities passing ordinances that differed from state law you have to think this is a win (albeit small) for cities as something less sweeping could now be passed and the gradually built up.

It just plain sucks that it has to be done that way but at least there is a way forward now which is much better than where it stood.

What sucks about this is it reverts back to a status quo of covert discrimination (pre-Charlotte ordinance) as opposed to overt (HB2), and now the NC GOP knuckledraggers get to crow about how they repealed HB2 as if they were magnanimous statesmen...

^ the status quo wasn't bad before, trans ppl could use the bathroom that makes the most sense and at least it wasn't illegal.

This type of reasonable compromise is how politics is supposed to work.

We're basically in the dont-ask-dont-tell phase of trans acceptance.

So Charlotte repealing their bill is contingent on the complete repeal of HB2, which includes several other provisions. I wouldn't put it past these shitbags to try and force through a new bill with the lesser known/publicized provisions intact sans the trans bathroom provision that everyone is so up in arms about.

Regardless, lots of eyes on the NCGA today.

^We should know what the new districts are by March and the Election is supposed to be in late August or Early September (the legislator sets the date).

The worst part about these special session fiascos is that most people I talk to don't seem to give a shit. I mean, I know most conservatives only care about winning and punching down on [insert group that is not them or their families], but even liberal leaning folks I talk to are doing nothing.

At this point, a vast majority of the state is suffering from Stockholm Syndrome having lived for so long under the thumb of the NC GOP. The mentality is "oh, they'll do what they're gonna do and then the courts will work it out EVENTUALLY." Its this blah state of acceptance as we all just try to live. Its why I have no hope that the special election will do much of anything to break us out of the GOP strangle hold.

You realize this is exactly what the Democrats did here? They played Charlotte, the gay community, and the Moral Monday protestors to executive power. Along the way they showed that they couldn't care less about trans rights.

But the left's manipulation of [insert group that is not them or their families] for their own political gain is nothing new. And America understands this, which is how the worst candidate in the history of candidates was able to win the presidential election. So let's stop pretending that the left has more compassion for the disadvantaged.

1) people were protesting way before HB2, moral monday was before HB2
2) how has anyone other than the Charlotte City Council shown that they don't care about this issue?
3) do you not see how you are getting played by the GOP "values" agenda?

Not saying they didnt. I know moral monday protests started well before HB2. But they were able to froth up the same moral monday protestors for this. These protesters were just pawns to get media attention and put pressure on Mcrory during the election. There clearly wasnt the intention of actually changing the law.
Quote :
"2) how has anyone other than the Charlotte City Council shown that they don't care about this issue?"
Considering that no senate democrat ever voted against HB2 or for the repeal, I would assume that they don't care about the issue.
Quote :

I have been just as critical about the GOP (especially the way they handled HB2). And honestly, its an issue I don't really care about. But if you cant see how the Dems used this strictly for political purposes, I dont know what to tell you.

so there is no longer any provision that they would revert? Why would they take that clause out?

And even if they didn't have that clause, why can't they just pass a new anti-discrimination law/ordinance?

But what about the very next line of your quote after the part you bolded?

I'm not trying to be nit picky here, I read through the link and still don't quite understand the whole thing.

In the end my questions still stands: If HB2 isn't repealed in full, what's stopping Charlotte from reinstating their protections?

On Monday Charlotte repealed the bathroom and locker room part of their ordinance, it included an ultimatum that state lawmakers repeal HB2 by 12/31. Republicans bitched and moaned. Yesterday Charlotte repealed all parts of the ordinance and did not include an ultimatum. Republicans, predictably, backed out like little bitches.

To answer your second question: nothing, just a pretty good guarantee that state legislators would simply re-pass HB2 if Charlotte did that

oh are you asking what's to stop charlotte from repassing their ordinance now that the GOP didn't repeal HB2?

in the short term the hope that the GOP repeals HB2, in the long term just political threats
