Isn't there something else about losses of 9 points or less being "less bad" than losses of double digits? I don't know how our respective losses compare, but that could be a factor.

I think scoring margin used to be a part of the formula but no longer is. This is what the NCAA website says:

I think the margin of victory/defeat is indirectly counted when they factor in net points per 100 possessions.
