I'd be interested in a tww board game club thingy.
and the tabletop series is a lot of fun to watch if you're into games, or even remotely dorky. The episode with Day[9] and Grant Imahara was fantastic

I would say Table Top is what really got us and our kids into board gaming. We got two copies of Castle Panic, so I am taking one back and picking up Small World, I think. 12/26/2012 7:29:23 AM |

What are some good two person games? 12/31/2012 11:22:18 PM |
slackerb All American 5093 Posts user info edit post |
Depends on what kinds of games you like.
Lost Cities - two player card game. Very simple and easy to learn, takes about 45 mins. All the cooperative games are good for two players like Pandemic, Arkham Horror, etc. War of the Ring - Excellent LOTR strategy game. Pretty complex and very long. 4-6 hours. Twilight Struggle - terrific strategy game based on the cold war. Quite complex and very long. 3-5 hours.

Twilight Struggle is the top rated game on BGG. It looks very intriguing.
But I can't imagine a use case where I would want to only play with 1 other person for 5 hours. 1/1/2013 12:49:20 PM |

I thought this was cool:
Quote : | "Risk Legacy Technically this came out in 2011, but 2012 was Risk Legacy's year. Gaming groups across the world were cracking open the game's briefcase-like box and embarking on campaigns with no idea where this game was going to take them.
Risk Legacy is a clean-cut example of how joyous and experimental today's board game scene is. In its tidy box are not just whole packs of cards of sealed cards, but entire sealed compartments, which you only open after certain things happen in the wars of your world.
In other words, as you wage wars on this private Earth of yours, you'll change it forever. It'll gain a history, with irradiated regions and new cities ("ROBERT-OPOLIS" scrawled on your board, forever, in leaky pen). Cards are torn up. Winners sign the board. Within just a few games, your copy of Risk Legacy will be entirely unique.
How about that?
I don't own Risk Legacy, but my friend does. The other week he lifted up the box inlay, looking for more space to put the game's latest surprise, and found yet another secret pack of cards taped to the bottom of the box.
"DO NOT OPEN, EVER", it read. When my friends finish their campaign, they're going to burn it.
Board gaming, ladies and gentlemen." |

^^^I've played in two campaigns so far, and we're in the middle of the game basically.
It's every bit as awesome as it sounds. I HIGHLY recommend it if you can get the same 5 players to commit to playing it. Each game is about an hour and it runs 15 games long.
It's amazing. 1/1/2013 9:07:46 PM |
dtownral Suspended 26632 Posts user info edit post |
Do you need the same 5 for each game? 1/1/2013 10:02:21 PM |
slackerb All American 5093 Posts user info edit post |
It's not a requirement but I highly recommend you have as consistent of a group as possible.
During and after each game, players change the board and gain advantages and disadvantages. A new player coming in at game 7 will have had no impact and setup from previous games and no advantages for winning previous games. Unless he's playing "for" the missing player, it'll be a little wonky.
For example, for each game you have won previously, you get a missle that lets you change any one dice (even not your own) to an unmodifiable 6. So if I come into game 10 brand new, I might be playing against a guy with 5 missles and who has designed a fortress in Africa for his side.
It'll work, but you'll lose a lot of the intent of the game if you have a constantly changing crew. 1/2/2013 10:52:29 AM |

I traditionally play some board games btw christmas & new years with some friends. Don't think I've seen this one mentioned, but Summoner Wars -2 player, expandable to 4- was a new one and a lot of fun:

Pandemic, Ticket to Ride, Dominion...all are popular recurring favorites. We'll also occasionally play some 3.0-3.5 D&D for full nerd effect since we only get together once a year 1/3/2013 8:27:54 PM |

We were delayed a couple of days in getting Small World, but we picked it up earlier this week, and played with the kids Wednesday evening. Worked pretty well even with a 5 and 9 year old. Helps that you don't have to hold cards, which can be an issue for the youngest when we play Munchkin. I ended up winning, but it was by no means a blow out. I started off slow but ended up doing very well with a couple of great power/race combos. I began with Spirit Dwarfs, then quickly moved on to Fortified Trolls, and finally Beserk Humans. The Spirited Dwarves kept the mine bonus going In Decline even after my Trolls declined, the Troll forts/lairs hanging on In Decline made their conquered lands almost impossible to defeat (and +1 point for each fort) and the last couple of turns I racked up lots of victory points. By the time Jessica figured out my strategy it was too late to do much damage. Hopefully the kids will start learning to pay attention to things like that, but it was still a really fun first game. The final points ran from the 70s to around 110 for me. 1/4/2013 9:08:45 AM |

^^Good choices. Spirit is great, Fortified Trolls is a powerful combo Regarding points in the 70s to 110s?!? Our games are usually within 10 points.
Interesting, the game is a remake of Vinci, which sounds quite boring and has horrible art.

So the holidays are over. Who is interested in a tww board game night? Maybe a once a month thing on a Friday, Saturday, or Sunday. I would be willing to host one. My place isn't big, but we could probably have two tables set up with games. We have one four person card table, so we would need one more if enough people were interested. Anyone? 1/5/2013 2:41:00 PM |

Weekends MIGHT be best for me but it depends on what weekend as some are already booked. But with kids and all it is much better for us to do weekends instead of weekdays. Couple things though if we did this, would it be kid friendly, or would we need to get a babysitter and leave them home? We would volunteer to do it here, but our apartment is not real big, and being in Carrboro, I doubt most would want to drive over here. 1/6/2013 8:45:58 AM |

I don't mind kids at my place, but it is not very big. It depends on how many people come. We have Netflix, Wii, PS3, and kids movies on blu ray, as well as kids board games. I've got mousetrap, chutes and ladders, kerplunk, connect four, twister, operation... if they are old enough and it is nice out there is a big open space out front and we have cornhole and a mini hockey kit.
Weekends are much better for me, but we could switch it up and have some weeknights as well.

^^I've got Civ, but I haven't played it yet myself. It seems like a longer game with a hefty rule-set and strategy, so I'm not sure if its the best for a gateway to board games if you are trying to draw someone in. For a gateway to these euro-style type games, I'd probably recommend simpler games like Settlers or Puerto Rico. 1/8/2013 10:37:15 PM |

Monopoly millionaire (I think thats what its called). My 6 year old can play it with us and it takes no more than 1 hour. (first to 1million wins, and its a modified board/cards/rules). 3 people is fine.

Hero's Quest. Anyone else play this as a kid? I loved this game, but never had anyone one to play with. I still have it in case I ever can find people to play with. It was a role playing game, like D&D, but with it's own charms. 2/11/2013 4:01:33 PM |

^ i loved hero quest, but no one in my family would ever play (after the first time). If you liked that, try Descent (version 2.0). It is basically the same thing (1 DM plus players that are against them), but adds more complexity that an adult would appreciate. Simple touches like respawning monsters, custom tiles for the board, etc are nice. The second version is much more accessible since it takes less time (a few hours to play) and has simplified combat.
I also just got back into Heroscape. All the joys of a tabletop fighting game, but with rules that are easy and simple to teach new people. Too bad it was discontinued and is thus super expensive. 2/11/2013 4:49:12 PM |
