I dont understand the bashing, are we really better off without him? Yeah he wasn't the best player on the floor, but put any bench player in his spot and would we have more or less wins. I think we all know the answer is less. We fucking sucks, get used to it. Until Williams and K leave we are ALWAYS gonna be 3rd and 4th fiddle around here. Having a better year than either one of them is the exception not the rule. I hate losing and I just broke another remote after this loss, but it is getting pretty normal. 3/12/2009 9:11:47 PM |

^I'd love to be 3rd fiddle at his point. Right now, we're not even in the band. And I honestly don't care if he comes back. He's got talent, but I'm just ready for the whole Fells/Ben/Costner/Herb era to be over and done with.

I meant just on tobacco road, but I do understand the sentiment, but if Lowe doesnt win in the next two years he will be out and we will look for another second tier coach. We need wins sooner rather than later for future recruits and coaching prospects. 3/12/2009 9:15:36 PM |

I hope he does come back because we'll need some depth and experience. But I feel like he wants to move on, and if he's not commited to hustling all season, working with the team and new players, and playing hard next year then he should and will move on. And we'll be ok, but I think we would be better with him. 3/13/2009 9:15:55 PM |

one more time:
If Costner doesn't come back next year, we're going to be shallow up front. Smith @ 6'8", Horner @ 6'9" (if you can call Horner a "big"-man), and freshman Howell @ 6'8". Costner gets lazy and seems to forget he's on the court sometimes, but he has the potential to go-off. I'd much rather have him than any other mediocre big-man we might be able to land for '09. Hopefully save BC's scholarship for '10.
^oh yeah, and experience. Without him, Ferguson, Horner, and Farnold are our seniors!

we really aren't going to be that much worse in the frontcourt next year than we were this
Sure McCauley is 6'9 but he has the athleticism of a 60 year old woman. Howell, one inch shorter or not, should be a decent replacement. The only thing I'd really worry about is experience
also we do have this guy http://www.gopack.com/ViewArticle.dbml?SPSID=41962&SPID=3731&DB_OEM_ID=9200&ATCLID=1584965

Think about this for a minute guys: If Costner doesn't come back then Horner likely starts.
Do you really want that?
Because even though I am pretty sure Howell will be light years ahead of Horner, Dennis would still start. 3/14/2009 3:08:39 PM |

pros: the sooner we get to only lowe recruits, the sooner we can get a new coach cons: without costner we have less of a chance of making the cbi 3/14/2009 3:22:39 PM |

Jesus you're an idiot.
As long as sport has been around, there have been critics.
The only difference between now and 200BC is that the medium for critical statements has changed.
If someone wants to talk about something positively or negatively, they've got every right to. Sports are just fucking games anyway, no one's life depends on it, you god damned douche sack, so shut the fuck up with this "HURT MY TEAM" bullshit.

Costner is an interesting case and a double-edged sword for Sidney Lowe. He obviously didn't develop the way we would have liked (and that's on him and Lowe -- I'd include Sendek like I do for Fells/McCauley, but he really didn't get a chance his frosh year with the injury so HS is absolved in this case). Costner is honestly the only reason Lowe isn't on an INCREDIBLY hot seat right now. Without him being all world in the ACC Tourney 2 years ago Lowe hasn't done ANYTHING to show he can coach in 3 years.
Then again, his lack of development is one of the reasons we, as a team, have been so disappointing the last two years.
Personally, I'd like him to come back. He's a good kid who has never been in trouble, a good representative for our University as a student-athlete and a guy who CAN (key word) play well and provide depth.

it doesn't matter how much talent he has if he doesn't ever use it
he falls apart in the face of the least little bit of adversity - if the first shot he takes in a game doesn't go in he essentially gives up right then and there
i'd much rather have horner - he may have no natural skill whatsoever but damnit if he doesn't try Plus he's actually improved significantly unlike costner who seems perpetually stuck in cheezburger mode
now yeah, if by some freak alignment of the fucking planets costner starts playing to his ability and like he's shown he's able to do 2 years ago, fuck yes i want him back. I just don't think that guy exists anymore 3/14/2009 6:03:02 PM |

Costner, Ferguson depart basketball program
NC State men's basketball coach Sidney Lowe has announced that redshirt juniors Brandon Costner and Trevor Ferguson will forego their final year of eligibility, and not return to the Wolfpack in 2009-10. Costner will earn a degree in communications in May, while Ferguson plans to earn a degree in science, technology and society in the summer.
"Brandon has enjoyed a great career at NC State, and now is going to prepare himself to go through the NBA Draft process," said Lowe. "Trevor feels like it was his time to move on, and we will continue to help him in his pursuit of his degree."
After sitting out most of the 2005-06 season with a stress fracture, Costner has been a constant in the Pack lineup for the last three seasons. He played in 110 career games with 84 starts averaging 12.6 points and 5.9 rebounds during his career. This season, he became the 41st player in school history to score 1,000 career points, and ended his career with 1,273 (27th most in NCSU history). In 2008-09, Costner led the Pack in scoring (13.6) and was second in both rebounding (6.1) and in assists (71).
Costner was named to the ACC All-Freshman team and was also a third-team All-ACC selection as a redshirt freshman in 2006-07. He was just the seventh freshman in ACC history to lead his team in both scoring (16.8) and rebounding (7.3) his rookie season.
"I really want to thank the coaches, the fans and everybody at NC State for the time I have spent here," said Costner. "So many people have helped me while I was a member of the Wolfpack, I just feel like it is time to move on and pursue my dreams of playing professionally."
Ferguson transferred to NC State after signing a letter of intent with Pittsburgh, and sat out the 2005-06 season. He played in 52 career games, with his eight starts all coming this past season. For his career, Ferguson averaged 3.7 points in 15.5 minutes of action, hitting 37.4 percent (43-115) of his career three-point attempts.
"I enjoyed my time here at NC State, and am proud to have been a member of the Wolfpack family," said Ferguson. "Playing in the ACC was something I enjoyed, and now I look forward to moving on in my life."" |
