O'Malley was awful. Strickland was blah. Obama's half sister and brother-in-law were filler.

V she's the first lady. What do you expect? What did Ann Romney do any different?

Man, she is the most biased speaker ever. Of course she thinks her husband is the greatest man on Earth. Of course she wants her husband to keep his cushy job in the WHITE House so she can keep eating that good White House kitchen cookin'.

Michelle's speech is just more filler.
Too bad her husband is why Americans are still having a hard time making ends meet.

i've been watching off and on on CNN, i like how they have had (as far as commentators) a mix of dems and repubs to suck off the speeches as well as critique them fairly

cant imagine watching on either Fox News or MSNBC and seeing the total slurping or total criticism sides

That was as good a night of speeches as anything the Republicans did.

Doesn't really matter though. The economic indicators the next two months will tip the election one way or another. If it was today, Obama wins but a lot can change and the stock market historically will slide a bit after Labor Day.

What? Did you just use the stock market's fluctuation as an indicator of economic health? The only thing that's going to prevent an Obama re-election at this point is another financial collapse or Isreal going to war with Iran.

Unless we have another big market crash, economic indicators won't matter.

Romney is so unliked, he doesn't stand a chance. Republicans are not going to turn out for some guy they tepidly like, no matter how much they hate Obama. If Obama mobilizes his base, he wins because Romney is certainly not mobilizing republicans. This is in stark contrast to how people were really excited about George W Bush.

Meanwhile, Obama has the huge incumbent advantage. Are people going to switch to Romney because he is 5% better? 10% better? Hell no. You have to be significantly better to make the turnover overhead worth it.

It probably doesn't help that the Republican base is primarily angry, poor, southern white men.

I know a lot of smart people with a lot of well-funded research work on this stuff, but I just have a hard time believing that "energizing the base' is really ever as important as picking up the independent, "swing vote".

exactly

there is a reason the vast majority of both candidates' hundreds of millions of dollars in campaign finances are going towards a handful of swing states

Look fellas, I know team Red is looking pretty rough at the moment but stop trying to rephrase how campaigns are fought. If boots on the ground didn't matter then there wouldn't have been a huge and wasted effort by GOP legislators to limit voter registration.

states like Alabama are gonna go to Romney, period

states like New Hampshire are gonna go to Obama, period

therefore, neither candidate is gonna make any type of effort, monetarily, or "through enthusiasm and energy" to change those

they're going after the swing states, plain and simple, period. States like North Carolina, Virginia, Ohio, etc

thats not partisan, thats how presidential campaigns have worked in our lifetimes

Doesn't matter how much Romney is liked. What matters is how much Obama is disliked.

A marginal voter (swing voter) is going to poll all his friends and see that 30% say they like obama, 30% say they hate obama, and 5% say they like Romney. With this breakdown, this guy's going to hear more coherent pro-obama messages than pro-romney messages from people he actually knows. Consequently, he's not going to get off the couch for romney. This may be embarrassing, but that's how this election is getting decided.
