I want that Rambler. Actually I want to recreate a Hornet SC360.

What keeps tickling my mind as of late: ditch the Canyon and pick up a Fiesta ST. If I’d fit.

Especially with stirrings in the press about SuperDodge coming home to daddy.

I know all about the superdodge now that Jeepman got his new X

Current flavor for Rambler is N/A LS3 with that 6060 behind it.

Just picked up the closest thing I've ever had to a new car before. 2016 Mazda 6 GT. Every single option. Thing is so sweet and EPA rated to 40 mpg highway.

My favorite part of this was that Carmax did have the GT package listed, but did not know about the i-ELOOP and had it listed nowhere. I found it when I popped the hood and the power connections under the drivers seat. So they could have listed the better gas mileage, but they had no clue. Which is fine by me as that might have raised the price a bit more.

Has anyone thought, within the last several years, that they wouldn’t fuck that car all up?

_____

I also keep having the idea of a no-longer seriously competitive D-sports racer as a track day toy and autocross weapon. Grab one for mid-teens, I think. Not gonna do it soon...just a recurring thought.

^^^It's a little skewed from the angle and being in a tight trailer, but I think it looks fine. Additionally, it looks 99% like everyone already assumed it would for the last few years. No surprises here.

^^hard to fuck up a car much more than not offering a manual. Though I'm also suspicious that it's weight will be heavier than it should be as well.

In addition to the forthcoming 6 cylinder powered 2nd gen Cayman GT4, there will be 6 cylinder powered Cayman and Boxster "Touring" models. This could be exciting as it could depress (slightly) 981 prices, hehehe.

Pretty similar in size, performance and price (depending on spec) but one makes awesome sound.

981 ain't got them hips!

I'd give the best overall looks to the 987.1 over all gens. The .2 does have nicer tail lights.

^I didn't realize Skyactiv had generations. Hell, the 1st gen was already 40mpg in a Mazda3, was it not?

Friendly reminder; make sure you're comparing apples to apples. European MPGS are Imperial Gallons (~4.54L) vs US Gallons (~3.785L) and how European NEDC testing is different from US EPA testing. I wouldn't get too excited about the reported fuel efficiency until you better understand what are generating those metrics. Assuming the testing environment is the same, 30MPG US is about 36MPG European, thus 45mpg European would be about 36MPG US.

I think I like the 981's design language best overall, but I like the 987, too. The 987 has a lower, leaner profile--the 981 is starting to get a little afflicted by Fat Ass Blocky Modern Car Syndrome.

I'd never consider a 987.1; they're a non-starter in my book. IMS issues and engine lubrication/bore scoring issues. Don't hold up as well on-track.

A 987.2 Cayman S with 6MT, not in black, is a near-unicorn, by the way. I've been looking for a few months...and a 981 is surprisingly little more money than a .2
_______________________________

I still really want a Porsche, but I'm thinking about an FR-S or BRZ. It's actually mostly not price-driven. Well, it kind of is, but indirectly. I'm finally in a position where I could afford the Porsche very comfortably without really sacrificing anything else. The problem is that if I get a "special" car, it will strictly be a toy, and I will get a pristine example and keep it immaculately cared for...and my wife's 2 kids are elementary-school aged and not used to being around nice cars and taking care of them.

They leave their shit out in the garage and I end up backing over it...I went outside the other day and found them using my old Honda to pull themselves along on their little scooters. They could very easily scratch it with a bicycle or something. I'm unwilling to keep a car like that in my attached garage--it would drive me crazy. I could put it in my shop, but I'm about to put my restored truck out there, and there's not quite enough space for 2 vehicles in it. Plus, as soon as I sell my rental house, I'm gonna put my current house up for sale, and we'll be house-shopping. I can't guarantee that the next house will have 2-car attached and 2+ car detached, and I'm not sure if I want to build a big shop, because we'll only be there about 5 years.

It looks like I can buy a nice example of a BRZ/FR-S for about $10k or slightly more, and then do a header, ECU tuner, coilovers, and more aggressive brake pads for about $1500-1700. That's probably good for roughly 40-50 hp on that car, depending on if it's running 93 or E85. That would put it right there with an S2000...not fast, but enough to be reasonable for an inexpensive sports car and good fun for the dollar.

I know Ahmet is gonna bust my balls for still having another reason not to do it, but I think this is a smarter solution for right now. Start here, and hopefully then get what I want if this works out.

It's hard not to get a little big-headed just from being in a Porsche, even if it's a Cayman or Boxster. It's a nice feeling I don't imagine you'd get sitting in a BRZ, as capable as they are.

I've read that the IMS in the 987 Cayman is really a non-issue if the car is regularly driven (thus lubricated). It was more of a 986/996-era problem. I don't know anything about them blowing up on track but the one guy I've met who's tracked his 987.1 did blow it up while racing

Yeah my gut feeling is that IMS alone is not a reason to avoid the 987.1, but the other engine issues that seem to present themselves in track-driven examples are...with IMS being the icing on the cake.

That seems to be the widespread feeling among the Cayman group I follow on FB. If it’s going to be tracked much, make it a .2

I echo that. My wife has a brand new 86 with the Sachs Dampeners, Pilot Sport 4s on 18s, Big Brembos, etc... It's a fun car and drives like a go-kart. But it doesn't even compare to a 986S. Even though there's 13 years between TKE-Teg's Cayman S and my wife's 86, I'd pick the Cayman every day of the week. The torque, the fit and finish, the sounds it makes, and yes, bit of Porsche Prestige, all factor into a much nicer package. Now, is a 987.2 worth 2-3x that of an 86 in comparison. For my wife, no. For me, yes. You can get a 986.1 for as much as a new BRZ. Used BRZs are a couple thousand less, and maybe you could supercharge or turbo it to make up for the power deficit. Still, you're in a BRZ. I'd argue if money isn't the object of deciding, anyone is better off with the OEM package Porsche offers than a tuned BRZ.

Do it. Be a P-Car owner. I'm waiting for the day I can return to the scene legitimately.

I believe i've struck a deal on an FR-S. Ultramarine blue, Enkei wheels, with basically every mod you might want to do short of internal engine work or forced-induction (or a cage or gutted interior or whatever). Supposed to pick it up this weekend.

Picked it up yesterday...got it all cleaned up today. Previous owner was ABSURDLY meticulous on maintenance and mods, but it was fucking nasty when I picked it up. I can kind of understand the exterior; it was parked outside at his office for the last couple of months since he got a new family hauler and hadn't been driving the FR-S, but I would be embarrassed for my car to ever be so dirty inside. If it ever got that bad, I guarantee it would only be for a day or two, and it would most certainly be spotless if I had a potential buyer coming to look at it. Kinda weird that someone who runs Royal Purple and Motul fluids, changes the diff and trans fluid every 20k miles, waxes the car 2x/year like he should, replaces his Bilsteins and poly sway bar bushings every couple of years in case they're worn, etc, would allow the interior to be dirty. Fucking dirt everywhere...Cheerios in the floor in the backseat, looked some dog hair or some shit, although he said he never had an animal in it.

Anyway, all the important stuff was spot on. I got it cleaned up decently, and I can have a detail guy address everything else for prob $100-something.

It has a little bit of rash on one wheel, and a minor, dime-sized dent on an A-pillar. Hopefully I can get those fixed pretty inexpensively. For the paltry sum I paid for it, I'm super pleased.
