Unless I’m reading it wrong he’s shitting on the user for criticizing Cuomo (as in wow, you’re so radical you don’t even like Cuomo).

Thing is, I’m probably more left than I’m given credit for on here but I’m still a bang average ideological centrist in the context of where I grew up... and even I think Cuomo is mostly garbage. Only after a legit primary challenge the left did be relent on a few legitimately rightwing positions. He’s generally well to the right of Biden.

And I’ll say he has gotten rave reviews on his handling of COVID-19 but he’s been pretty average at best compared to guys like Inslee and Newsom. I understand NY has unique problems given the reliance on public transportation among all but the super-wealthy and population density but he let a complete incompetent (De Blasio) have way too much rope to hang himself early on. I credit him for his transparency but honestly not much more.

Of course when you compare it to the bumbling, rambling nonsense of Trump he looks like a Golden God but I think we should hold our public officials to a higher standard then better than a failed businessman turned reality tv actor.

Yea i thought that, couldn't tell if he meant off limits for criticism or support.

But yea Cuomo has gotten props for not shitting himself when discussing CV, otherwise he's pretty bad, for a dem. I think he is best known for helping republicans retain control of the state house.

Warren put out a big list of endorsements but apparently didn’t endorse anyone on the justice Dems. Completely embarrassing for her and the Democrats.

They’re cutting out the group that younger people most identify with.

She hasn't endorsed the squad. Not even Ayanna who endorsed her. Its only embarrassing to people who didn't know what Elizabeth Warren is. A person who is only trying to do whats in best interest of advancing her career.

Proposal for an extra $15/hr for essential workers, no bill text yet but it seems very broad. I feel like this one might have a chance of passing.

The deadest of dead political opinions is that Clinton is going to replace Biden on the ticket.

Well, that and Trump is going to try and serve more terms than two (like he’d be a functioning human even at 80).

Pretty wild how the guy in charge of what became by far, the biggest outbreak is actually being elevated to national leader status. Theres only one explanation for the guy with the worst results actually being hailed as the hero.

Its that results don't matter. People had already made up their mind who was at fault for every subsequent death before Cuomo's devastating order on nursing homes. The only thing that matters is how you sound on the podium and Cuomo sounds great on the podium. Make him president!

Also, while he makes everyone stay home and police are openly beating black people for not following orders, his brother gets to go out and get coronavirus and still go out more. Look away from that.

Cuomo is also teaming up with the Gates Foundation, which advocates for school privatization, to "reimagine education in the new normal".

They are literally anti-union and for expanding charter schools. All privatization advocates mask their goals in the language of "improving access and quality for students", including the Devos and Koch Foundations.

But seriously if your IMMEDIATE criticism is how much they've donated compared to their net worth (not even accounting for all the other programs they're trying to solve), that's kinda sad.

I’ve posted about Cuomo and it shows you what transparency (de Blasio) and not sounding like a lunatic (trump) can do for your public perception.

Cuomo actually isn’t good but his transparent press conferences are why he has such high approval.

(Though, to not point out the obvious reasons why NYC was always going to be the worst is lazy)

^^
The money goes toward building programs and initiatives organized by the Gates Foundation, which are then implemented in public schools. This is a way for two billionaires to dictate how public schools operate, which historically has ended in failure, cost schools money, reduced education quality for students, and made teachers' jobs unnecessarily difficult. Note here in particular that charter school organizations are using the word "public" in their names to confuse people, similar to "right-to-work" initiatives that are anti-union.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/answer-sheet/wp/2018/06/29/bill-gates-spent-hundreds-of-millions-of-dollars-to-improve-teaching-new-report-says-it-was-a-bust/

Quote :
"The six-year project began in 2009 when the foundation gave millions of dollars to three public school districts — Hillsborough County in Florida (the first to start the work), Memphis and Pittsburgh. The districts supplied matching funds. Four charter management organizations also were involved: Alliance College-Ready Public Schools; Aspire Public Schools; Green Dot Public Schools; and Partnerships to Uplift Communities Schools.

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation pumped nearly $215 million into the project while the partnering school organizations supplied their own money, for a total cost of $575 million. The aim was to create teacher evaluation systems that depended on student standardized test scores and observations by “peer evaluators.” These systems, it was conjectured, could identify the teachers who were most effective in improving student academic performance.."

They're using public schools as testing grounds and data collection centers, while they fund and promote charter schools as "successful" alternatives.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/answer-sheet/wp/2014/06/09/how-much-bill-gatess-disappointing-small-schools-effort-really-cost/

Quote :
"Many of the small schools that we invested in did not improve students’ achievement in any significant way. These tended to be the schools that did not take radical steps to change the culture, such as allowing the principal to pick the team of teachers or change the curriculum. We had less success trying to change an existing school than helping to create a new school. Even so, many schools had higher attendance and graduation rates than their peers. While we were pleased with these improvements, we are trying to raise college-ready graduation rates, and in most cases, we fell short.

But a few of the schools that we funded achieved something amazing. They replaced schools with low expectations and low results with ones that have high expectations and high results. These schools are not selective in whom they admit, and they are overwhelmingly serving kids in poor areas, most of whose parents did not go to college. Almost all of these schools are charter schools that have significantly longer school days than other schools."

In reference to the $1.7 billion specifically, 15% of that went directly to charter schools

http://laschoolreport.com/here-are-3-california-school-networks-that-will-be-getting-gates-foundation-money/

Here's a fun story about how Gates spent tens of millions of dollars to overpower the will of voters and preserve charter schools in Washington

https://www.king5.com/article/news/local/bill-gates-among-billionaires-pushing-for-charter-schools/281-574211545

And regarding unions, Gates funded and promoted an entire pro-charter, anti-union documentary.

I'm not speaking for whatever gates is doing but I don't like your all or nothing attitude. It probably won't surprise you to hear this, but I'm a private school teacher, not because i believe school privatization is the best, but because the public school system is too broken to be addressed outside the context of major political reform.

So even though I think the ideal school system is 100% public, and can see that elsewhere in the world, the way our public school systems operate is irreparably problematic and creates divide rather than addressing it. The best public school in my area is great but you have to be a millionaire to live in the zip to send your kids there. Once your kids are there, the school still doesn't operate in an ideal fashion.

Meanwhile, the private school I work for is better quality than the best public schools, has 10x more diversity, 75% students on financial aid or scholarship, autonomy over itself to act on behalf of academic research instead of state mandates, and 100% college acceptance + a college scholarship fund for kids who come from less privileged backgrounds and don't get their college tuition covered .

That doesn't speak for most private schools but it speaks to the idea that just because something is private in America, doesn't mean its about greed. You have to understand the public sector in this country has been intentionally sabotaged.

No leftist teacher or organization can go in and "save" the public schools when they were specifically designed to create and perpetuate inequities.

I'm glad your students are getting a good education, but that isn't the goal of privatization and never will be. Capitalists seek to erode trust in public services by reducing their funding and efficacy, while pumping money into "better alternatives". Then, when the public services are gone, the private market can suck consumers dry and deny service to those who can't afford it.

I don't fault you at all for working for a private school, but understand where the path leads.

Not that I see anyone on here doing it, but the kind of thinking that anyone would say this is incongruent with your political views is exactly the same as when we see right wingers yelling at Bernie Sanders for owning a house or taking a congressional salary. It’s bizarre. People, even revolutionaries, need to make a living and if they can’t they won’t have the resources to try and change the system.

General Jack D. Ripper : Mandrake, do you realize that in addition to fluoridating water, why, there are studies underway to fluoridate salt, flour, fruit juices, soup, sugar, milk... ice cream. Ice cream, Mandrake, children's ice cream.
Group Capt. Lionel Mandrake : [very nervous] Lord, Jack.
General Jack D. Ripper : You know when fluoridation first began?
Group Capt. Lionel Mandrake : I... no, no. I don't, Jack.
General Jack D. Ripper : Nineteen hundred and forty-six. 1946, Mandrake. How does that coincide with your post-war Commie conspiracy, huh? It's incredibly obvious, isn't it? A foreign substance is introduced into our precious bodily fluids without the knowledge of the individual. Certainly without any choice. That's the way your hard-core Commie works.
Group Capt. Lionel Mandrake : Uh, Jack, Jack, listen... tell me, tell me, Jack. When did you first... become... well, develop this theory?
General Jack D. Ripper : [somewhat embarassed] Well, I, uh... I... I... first became aware of it, Mandrake, during the physical act of love.
Group Capt. Lionel Mandrake : Hmm.
General Jack D. Ripper : Yes, a uh, a profound sense of fatigue... a feeling of emptiness followed. Luckily I... I was able to interpret these feelings correctly. Loss of essence.
Group Capt. Lionel Mandrake : Hmm.
General Jack D. Ripper : I can assure you it has not recurred, Mandrake. Women uh... women sense my power and they seek the life essence. I, uh... I do not avoid women, Mandrake.
Group Capt. Lionel Mandrake : No.
General Jack D. Ripper : But I... I do deny them my essence.

I support all of those things but they just don't belong in a COVID bill. Its almost like the democrats wanted it to get rejected and this is largely the way DC works. Its frustrating. This should have been basic to just relief stop trying to sneak more of our agenda into it. Now is not the time. They should have passed all of those things in 2009 when they had the chance.

Congress should not operate the way it does. One bill one issue. This would require them actually doing work and being busy all of the time so it won't happen. Fuck both parties and the lobbyist ecosystem writing all the bills for them.
