i've realized i've probably been using the perks incorrectly, and been trying to fix it.
having never played a game like this before, i kinda just went willy nilly where i had been using things, and not really thinking about the perk distribution.
my character is a wood elf, so has the highborn magicka effect, so i'm starting to concentrate more on the destruction/restoration side of things, instead of two handed weapons and archery, which i relied on pretty much exclusively early on.
sunk like 10 perks into those two, but that shouldn't be too big of a deal i don't think.
character at level 15 or so, starting to see more dragons randomly about.
on the college quest that sends me to go get the books from the keep, and keep getting jacked up by fire mages (well, tried twice... then did a bunch of alchemy and smithing with the shit i've had stored at breezehome). should be able to put a few hours in this afternoon.
the finacee deciding she wants to start back up with long distance running / marathon training has really helped with having time to play viddya games. 1/17/2012 8:53:25 AM |

It's not Cicero. He's creepily affectionate with the Night Mothers corpse, but he doesn't get freaky with it.

I have two characters now...I'll probably never finish the game with either of them. One is mostly warrior (Heavy Armor, Two Handed Weapons, Smithing, etc) and the other is Mage/Battlemage (Destruction, Alchemy, Enchanting, Smithing, Light Armor)

I have a level 49 Wood Elf light tank
100 smithing 100 enchanting 82 light armor 78 one handed 89 alchemy 85 archery 89 lockpicking
And midrange sneak, speech.
Full dragonscale suit (744 armor rating), and glass weapons. Going to create a new set when I get the second magic defense enchantment, as super strong magic is the only thing that even dents me anymore. Weapons are all in the 180-220 damage range with double enchantments.

SKYRIM SKYRIM SKYRIM.
If you are just starting out, choose woodelf and put perks into Stamina, Heavy Armor, and Archery and you'll be God in this game. I'm so OP and LOVE it. Can clear an instance without taking damage and down a dragon in 3-4 arrows... to it's face not it's knee! play as that class/race/perk combo if you want to play through it on cruise control of course. If you want a challenge then don't.
I'm a level 37 Woodelf Archer. I'm like a badass Katniss. Woot! 1/17/2012 12:54:40 PM |

i generally have a shitload of soul gems on hand, from common and petty up to grand and black...my daedric warhammer has the enchantment that it will fill a soul gem if somebody is killed within 5 seconds
question is, if i have empty grand soul gems and petty soul gems and kill a mammoth or a bandit, does the game try to fill the appropriate soul gem with a soul of the corresponding size if possible? or does it just fill them up 'randomly' or in the order you picked them up or something? 1/17/2012 1:31:41 PM |

^Smallest available gem it will fit in.
-------
There are plenty of ways to be "God" in this game, especially if you are using the standard Adept difficulty. I suspect your build would actually have the challenge you are looking for with Master setting (though maybe I'm wrong?). Archery is awesome, but it definitely teeters off on the higher difficulty if you don't have Sneak. Though it might still be OK with running away, but that's unlikely in heavy armor.
As an example of how easy it is to be a "God", I've seen a person with a character on Master difficulty running around completely naked except for a standard iron dagger and iron shield (non-enchanted). Its just a goofy build to make it challenging and have fun. He can't kill things like mammoths, dragons, ranged, or dwemer creations, but is untouchable to anything else.
I've gone Conjuration, Light Armor, One Handed, Enchant, Blacksmith, and Sneak with Breton. On Master, I'm untouchable. And that was before getting 100 Conjuration so I can now have two Daedra Lords. Its really just not fair. I don't even need to pull out my weapons anymore, though I can pretty much take anything 1v1 myself except maybe an Ancient Dragon. My weapons aren't even enchanted (aside from Soul Trap and a simple Paralize). I really should go back and get a second set to dual enchant each with actual damage for dragons. And maybe actually enchant gear with extra one-handed skill.

regarding soul gems: http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Soul_Gem_%28Skyrim%29
basically, it is a good idea to have empty soul gems of all sizes so that when you do kill a creature it goes into the appropriate sized gem and you aren't wasting a Grand Soul gem on a wolf, for example. 1/17/2012 1:51:19 PM |

Agreed, even on Master Difficulty, 100 conjuration is Uber. You just sit back and let your minions do the work. Overpowered builds really bore me, so I went with an aggressive smash-mouth build which really challenged my skills. I watched my friend play his Conjurer/Illusion Build with a Tank House Carl, and he had a personal army and just sat there watching everything. It looked incredibly boring.

Even if you do wind up wasting a grand on a Wolf you can just drop the soul gem and it will lose it's charge such that you can enchant it with something else.
I've found that I never have enough Lesser soul gems. So many things go into them when you get later in the game that it seems impossible to have enough of them.
If I ever start a new character I will be buying every one I can find from the start of the game.

Barbas will take down a herd of mammoths if you give him enough time

I went smash mouth dual wielding and nothing is a challenge in the game anymore on Master difficulty. Casters would usually give me fits, but now I can just whirlwind sprint to their face and obliterate them. Overwhelming Force is really over powered as well, though its funny as shit to send someone flying down a mountain.
On my next run I think I'll avoid doing Smithing and focus more on a light armor sneak character or something. Enchanting is still fun though 1/17/2012 2:06:06 PM |

as much as i sneak with my archer, i still am leveling up my smithing so that i am able to improve my armor and the few small weapons i carry: a dagger, a one-handed sword and an axe. i cant imagine not improving any of my wares as the game progresses in difficulty. 1/17/2012 2:14:00 PM |

Hopefully Skyrim will be modded by the PC community for online play. I will annihilate people with my battle mage build.
Whirlwind sprint + charging Critical strike Daedric Sword to the face, switch to impact dual cast destruction to Stagger them, then charging Critical Strike Daedric Sword to the face with a Slow Motion Decap. I'd only have trouble with sneak characters that I can't get the jump on, and pure tanks.
Most builds would die in 2 swings.

Where are you guys getting so many soul gems? I have a decent amount of the small gems, but I have mainly had to buy the grand soul gems that I wanted to use for enchanting weapons. Do you just grind dungeons to get them? Would love to be able to enchant more weapons, but I have been quite conservative due to the cost of buying grands. 1/17/2012 3:20:52 PM |

dungeons, caves, crypts are pretty good places to find the better soul gems. also big time dwermer ruins; they are easily found in them since the dwermer "creatures" use them. 1/17/2012 3:23:43 PM |

i've been in some dungeons (caves, reaches, whatever) where there are lots of mages, and they'll often have a soul gem on their dead corpse when i loot them
i try not to buy them because they're kind of expensive, but if i'm selling 1,000 coin enchanted daggers to some shopkeep and he only has like 200 coins, i might buy a couple soul gems to give him enough to buy an extra dagger 1/17/2012 3:25:52 PM |

When I run my trade routes I buy all of the available soul gems from the general stores, and I buy Farengar's stash as well. There's someone in the college who sells 'em too but I hate trying to track someone down in there.
I think I have over 200 filled lesser soul gems in the house, so I really shouldn't care.
If you're enchanting right Grand soul gems will pay for themselves. Be sure you're using Banish and Paralyze or Absorb Health if you're making weapons to sell. 1/17/2012 3:31:33 PM |

i think i'm using banish on my daggers...depending on the size of the soul gem, the value of them ranges between about 1,000 and 1,300 coins...not bad for an iron dagger

Now that I think about it, the step up in value when using Grand over Petty for enchantments wasn't remarkable if I remember correctly.
I think I started saving grands for constant effects on armor instead. 1/17/2012 4:23:39 PM |

if i'm trying to grind my way up to 100 enchanting, will using a grand vs. petty make a difference on how the skill grows? or is it just the act of enchanting that levels it? 1/17/2012 4:38:55 PM |
PrufrockNCSU All American 24415 Posts user info edit post |
It's my understanding that the skill grows based on the amount of value added to the item.
Grands will give you more charges and a more valuable enchanted item, but is the gain worth the cost of using petty soul gems? I think the increase in value of an enchantment using a Grand soul gem over a petty is less than the actual increase in cost of acquiring them.
I think the benefit of using a Grand over a Petty when enchanting items to up your skill or make a profit is outweighed by the difference in cost of the two. 1/17/2012 5:08:12 PM |

my enchanting is only to level 60 or so, but if its the same game mechanic as smithing, making 100 iron daggers boosts your smithing the same as making 100 daedric warhammers
but enchanting might work differently 1/17/2012 5:21:24 PM |

^^ yeah i started working on it and i'm at 75 now after maybe 3 hours of work. it seems like enchanting goes faster than smithing since you dont have to go mining everywhere and i'd much rather buy a shitload of petty gems and go out smacking people with my molag bal mace instead of spending hours and hours mining away with my pickaxe.
but damn i wish they'd make it easy to enchant multiple items at once... having to click through and select the item/ability/soulgem for every one is a pain in the ass 1/17/2012 6:29:19 PM |

apparently NPCs who can sell you up to 5 level increases in a particular skill "re-equip" that option after a certain amount of game time?
i was just talking to Vex in the thieves guild, and figured i'd get some lockpicking training, expecting to see the 5/5 already used up...but it was back to 0/5...too bad each level was like 4000 gold and i ran out after 3...anybody else experienced this? i'm 99% sure the first time I went into the Thieves Guild I bought all 5 upgrades
also the archer guy down there was at 0/5 as well, but i had to load my game because apparently i had a 1k+ bounty and after i fast travelled to the guild, a number of Riften guards followed me down there and started attacking 1/17/2012 8:19:03 PM |

Other things you might have missed:
You can trade gold for items. There are usually several merchants in each town that have selections of things that you can buy.
Those sharp pointy things are weapons. If you equip them in your hands, you can swing them around and kill enemies (Those are the things on the screen that try to kill you)1/17/2012 9:42:34 PM |
