Lets focus on this year.
Brady hasn't been all that special, especially in big games and during crunch time (see Colts, Jets games respectively)
Meanwhile PRiv has been one clutch motherfucker.
And predictably, he's had great games against pressure D's that tried to blitz the shit out of him (Pittsburgh, Denver X2)

Brady's stats are nearly identical to Phil's, with the exception of TD/INT ratio (18/8 for Phil, 22/12 for Tom).
What has Brady done this year to earn a spot over Phil?

Easy: he is playing on a shittier team with a depleted WR corps and doesn't have an MVP running back to divert attention away from him.
However, the counter-argument is that Philip has been more clutch, particularly on 3rd down and at the end of close games. 12/21/2006 11:51:38 AM |

^I think the Cincy and Pitt games are the ones that really impressed voters.
Plus with their weak WR core he's managed to put up pretty good numbers. The SD WR's are about equal to the NE WR's as far as talent goes. McCardell has been hurt so they are using some really low key guys to put up good numbers (Jackson and Parker are not big name WR's). I would love to see SD acquire a good WR in the draft (which is likely their biggest need) and make that offense even more potent.
Brady has had bad games here and there. Brady's Miami game is comparable to River's game last Sunday, so those 2 cancel out. When they voted Rivers stats were better than Brady's, better TD:INT ratio and the yards weren't much different. But even now after last week's games, I'd say River's stats are still just as good if not better. Brady just has more yards because he's been asked to do more. Had Marty let Rivers throw in the first 2-3 games he'd have a lot more stats and there wouldn't be a question. Plus had he been able to throw against Baltimore in the 2nd half then I'm pretty sure they'd only have 1 loss right now.
So Rivers actually has better/comparable stats and he didn't really get to open up the offense until he lit up Pitt. Where as Brady has been throwing it up from day one, thus the more passing yards.
Had Brady made the Pro Bowl over Rivers it would be more of a "name" vote. 12/21/2006 12:03:14 PM |

To me it is sad that we have to debate who is better Brady or Rivers.
They contribute in totally different ways. However, I think the Cinni game gave PRiv quite a bit of notoriety. Everyone can say what they want about how good the teams are, and I would never argue that PRiv carries the Bolts (I mean seriously, LT) but he makes very FEW mistakes and takes care of the football; he makes the pass when he has to and lets the rest of the game run its course. He is a freakin' football genius and I don't think anyone really doubts that.
Don't water down arguments FOR RIVERS by attacking Brady. That just makes you look stupid. Acknowledge that he is great and one of the best QBs playing the game to date and argue that it is MORE IMPRESSIVE that Rivers has numbers that rival Brady's in his FIRST YEAR as a STARTER 12/21/2006 4:36:36 PM |

They usually dunk a ball in a bucket of water to practice their wet-weather snaps.
