NASA was on the short list of people/agencies/situations/animals we HADN'T blamed yet

it was bound to happen

My point was the enormous wastefulness of NASA pales in comparison to the wastefulness of the War Department(I can't call it defense spending with a straight face)

lol you forgot to add the wasteful $5 spent to buy your dumb username so you could troll about things you know nothing about. That $5 could have bought some poor starving kid a happy meal...

Inaccuracies:

Quote :
"The United States just spent the entire budget of my country to send a dummy payload into space"

It didn't go into space. The dummy payload was necessary to simulate the mass and aerodynamics of the upper stage.

Quote :
"Aww, it's over now and accomplished nothing."

It actually accomplished quite a bit. The amount of data and information that has been gathered from this flight has saved tons of time on money that would have been spent on tedious computer models that wouldn't be as accurate as the real thing.

And microbes in the water that will save the human race? What is the human race being saved from? Do your magic microbes cure all illnesses? Prevent war? I won't go into your other things because if you want to talk politics you can go to the soap box.

1.) You know nothing of my charitable contributions, and I'd ask you to refrain from ad hominem.

2.) I view manned spaceflight as a waste. This rocket's purpose is manned spaceflight. Therefore it's all a waste, regardless of any data gained.

3.) You call it trolling, I call it making a valid point at a time when the public is talking about it. You can see my most recent soapbox post if you'd like to know why you find my posts so threatening:
Quote :
"It's Us vs. Them. Them often thinks they're just Us, but they become Them all too easily.

Anyone in a government job does it. For instance, a big part of cops training involves separating them from everyday citizens, both physically(let's ride fucking horses down the sidewalk!) and mentally(no small talk with civilians, etc). The President, a random EPA agent and the woman at the DMV counter are all fed up with the citizens they're supposed to serve and would prefer to have all the power possible over them. They all have their own agendas, and woe be unto anyone in their way when their little department is threatened. But as long as they don't piss anyone else in the government off, they can continue to grab little bits of power and liberties for years."

Do you have any info on the size of NASA's PR budget? I know that they have their very own TV channel for some reason. They seem to be spending an awful lot just to convince people that they deserve to exist.

There are plenty of every day items we have today thanks in part to NASA. to name a few, invisible braces (in part because of NASA), scratch resistant lenses, components of the ear thermometer.

Also its in our nature to want to explore and look beyond...if more people thought like you (thank God they don't) we'd all still be living in caves making sure there was enough food to go round...

Also...until you, yourself, start contributing to solving the worlds problems keep your mouth shut. Keep your political hot air in the soap box and don't waste our time with it.

manned flight in general is such a waste.

Convince me that little kid needs or deserves to get the money we're spending on NASA. Why should I save him? Why should we save him? What's in it for us? I'll be really honest here, I don't give a shit about him. Fuck him. There, I said it. Fuck him. Yeah, it's a shit luck that he's born in the time and place he was born in. Shucks. Why is that my fucking problem? Why should we care?

We're pioneering advancements in science and aerospace. He's hollowing out a gourd. Fuck that, I want my money to go to NASA.

And fuck you for trying to make me feel bad about that.

*sigh*, this is true. The cost of one stealth bomber alone could pay for several shuttle missions and a whole bunch of research.

The tide of public opinion is indeed turning against NASA:
http://www.reddit.com/r/science/comments/9yvgm/ask_science_what_is_one_doable_thing_nasa_can_do/
Why should we go to Mars when 1/5 of the country can't even go to work?

What's this in today's newspaper? $11 million wasted by NASA, by their own admission. AND they tried to cover it up.

I can't wait for the Ares V... it is going to be a BEAST of a rocket. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ares_V

the Ares I and Ares V rockets are going to be a much more efficient and safe system than the space shuttle. I've been saying for years that we need a dedicated system for human transport and a dedicated system for heavy loads.

This graphic shows the lift capability into low earth orbit (where the ISS is located.) the Ares V outclasses all of the other rockets, even the old soviet heavy lifters (not shown)

think about how many fewer launches the construction of the ISS would have been if we were using the Ares V instead of the space shuttle. (no, not all of the components were delivered by the shuttle, but a lot were.)

Smath, what are these soviet heavies you were referring to?

Also, what rocket system of ours did we use for ISS initial launching, as didnt we use some like deltas to start? On that note, how much can a delta lift?

Advances in space is all I care about...I don't care if its done under a Russian flag, American flag, or chinese flag...it would be nice if we could all just go in on it together and split the costs as one space program.

Hey smc,

Nowhere on that bigass lego diagram of spending is a block that says 'manned space flight'. There is a block that has 'manned mission to mars,' but that is hardly the equivalent. Are you really so stupid that you think the two are the same thing?
