Has anyone here done a complete kitchen redo before?
We're thinking of buying a house but the kitchen kind of sucks and would need to be redone to be functional (cabinets are literally falling apart, no appliances, etc). It looks a lot like this kitchen but crappier and more closed in:
Those people did a remodel that while I'm not into the Star Trek look of it I do like how the kitchen is very open and kind of spills into the living area:
So my question is, how difficult is it to tear down a wall (assuming it's not a load bearing wall which I'm fairly sure it's not from what I saw), throw in a wall oven (I fucking loooooooooooove wall ovens) and install a cooktop? Is this something I could DIY with my construction savvy father or would it be in my best interest to hire a pro? We're probably going to roll about 25k in renovation costs into the house but I don't want to dump all of that into a kitchen project. I guess I could always get a contractor to do the difficult tasks and I can handle the easier shit like installing cabinets. 6/25/2011 10:01:32 PM |

I dunno (we did a small upgrade in our current kitchen; my in-laws did an update but I don't know cost. They partially did themselves and partial w/ help), but I'd post this in old school in either the homeownership woes or DIY project thread. Seem to get better responses in either of those and probably someone who has had experience.

Also! There was another kitchen remodel they did previously on Apt Therapy that I loved...used some of the original in there and ikea cabinets. it had a dual wall oven and cook top

I'm looking at that post right now Unfortunately I don't think there's much in this kitchen that could be salvaged. Possibly you could get away with just replacing the doors on the cabinets but the inside shelving was really bad off (some pieces rotting, etc). The flooring was recently replaced though so it has that going for it
I bought this kitchen remodel magazine at Quail Ridge the other day and one of the kitchen had this bad ass idea. They had an island that looked out into their living area and the patio, and the island was where they had the sink. But the sink was installed in such a way that it could also be used as a place to dump in a bag of ice and throw beers and sodas into it without a faucet and stuff being in the way. I wish I could find a pic online!

yellow can be a great color as long as its the right color for the room and you have accent pieces that compliment it well. i feel like a lot of times either the yellow is too light and you can barely see it or it's too bright and you feel like you have to wear sunglasses when you're in the room.
i recently redid our guest bedroom and i painted the a nice light to medium gray color and did yellow accents (yellow bedspread and some other pieces). it came out really nice. i still have some other things to do to the room but overall i am please with the color and look.7/15/2011 3:30:10 PM |

We're planning on painting our living room and hallway grey. Got the swatches up the other night.
Probably going to go with either #1 or #2. I wish my phone took better pics 10/4/2011 10:32:55 AM |

Gotta have some bling, baby
But seriously, our entire house has gold plates I wonder if I could get $20 for them if I sold them on Craigslist as a set lol. Or maybe someone will trade me white plates for my gold ones 10/4/2011 10:46:34 AM |

I actually like those colors (the paint colors, not the gold plates ) . So, definitely post your "after" pictures!
I may need some help in a few weeks. The house I'm moving into has an oddly shaped bonus rooms. Very large, but long and skinny, with low slanted ceilings. I'm thinking of doing a dove gray on the lower portion of the wall, with white on the slanted ceiling, and white gauzy curtains. I want to build a horizontal bookcase to line the lower portion of one of the walls, to draw attention down away from ceiling. It's going to be a guest room, with a white bed and navy comforter. So, I'm up for color ideas or decoration ideas. I'm at a loss at what to do with the slanted ceilings, since you can't really put any artwork up.

Bttt all you wall painters - can someone recommend a nice beige/off white. I'm thinking a warm beige but not on the yellow or pink side. I'm looking to paint the half bathroom and want to keep it simple but do one wall with a semi-gloss and flat paint horizontal stripe of the same color. Suggestions?
I want the color to be simple but rich. Does that make sense? Lol.

my sister did the whole stripe with a high gloss then the other paint was just a matte and it worked really well. very subtle but just enough of a different touch
if that helps 11/14/2011 9:49:33 PM |

I did my bathroom in Porter Paints "soft cloud" it's very nice and not as pink as it looks online. They also have vermouth white which was the second runner up for me. 11/15/2011 9:02:42 AM |

THANK YOU!!!! I'm going to go look at colors this evening so I can start painting this weekend
I'll definitely take before and after photos. I'm really excited. the bathroom currently has a very flat white paint on the wall and its so I want something nice but not too extreme. I like to keep it neutral and play with accessories and stuff like that. I have a great idea for what I want to hang up on the walls. 11/15/2011 11:08:47 AM |

Yay picked a color. I got a sample and tested it out on the walls just to be sure. Man picking a beige/cream was tougher than I thought. The color has more cream tones. I'm painting on Friday. Wohoo! 11/15/2011 6:55:59 PM |

ok so i'm back - with updates. i picked out the color, bought the sample, liked the sample and got to work yesterday. here are some before and after photos. i am still not completely done - i need to get a new mirror and some other accessories but the paint portion is done. it took me just about 3 hours to do it all. i have a few things i am going to touch up but it came out really nice and i really like the color.

Oooh I really like that. It's more subtle that I was imagining but that's a good thing. I'm not too hot on the bold stripes some people have been doing for their bathrooms. 11/17/2011 11:56:12 AM |

i took the pictures from my iphone. the stripe is a bit more noticeable in person and i think once i get a mirror up you will see it more. but i agree - i rather it be more subtle than more IN YO FACE. once i get the accessories up, i will take another picture. goal is to get this bathroom done in less than $200. i've spent $65 now with paint and supplies. 11/17/2011 12:50:22 PM |

Yay living room is done! I'll post pics once it has dried and furniture is back in place. One sad thing is that now that the walls are white and grey, it's super obvious at some point smokers lived here because the ceiling definitely has nicotine staining. Oops Guess in the spring we'll work on scrapping off the popcorn texture and painting the ceiling white. 12/16/2011 6:00:07 PM |

Ok, so I have my master bedroom and I want to spruce it up some...let me lay out the parameters.
I want to keep the beach theme/look. right now I have my old surfboard on the wall with a picture that one of my relatives painted years ago...they have to stay.
I just upgraded to a queen mattress and got a free headboard...but it doesnt match any of the wood on the picture or in the room itself. additionally its particle board so it would probably need to be painted or figure something out as far as the lightening of it.
what do you recommend? i thought about painting the headboard a teal color or blue to match the painting and bright colors.
here is the room in pictures.

the federal style headboard just doesn't say beach to me. if you have to keep it, i guess distressed white would look nice against greenish or blueish walls. rattan furniture always looks beachy. how about a couple side tables? gauzy white or ecru curtains and a seagrass rug. and one of those clear glass lamps you can fill with sand and shells and starfish. a tasteful tiki or a raunch souvenir from a M.B.S.C. tourist trap. and a dracena plant!

I threw something together. I really have no idea how big the space is, how much you are looking to replace, etc. so I just went for more of a "feel" with some different furniture and accessories and if you like it maybe it will give you some ideas.
Since you wanted to keep the picture, we know it's going to be in the room so I kind of played off of that. I think a sort of masculine take on the whole beachy feel can be had if you are utilizing the sort of "driftwood" look with your furniture. From what I could tell, the frame on the picture already kind of had that feel so I think that could work really well for a headboard or bed and nightstand.
To add a bit of color, I'd incorporate the colors already present in the painting. Obviously whites, greys, naturals, and blues/teals always scream ocean and you already have all those present in the picture. So, simply throwing a nightstand lamp and a pillow or two into the mix that have the blue hues in the picture will tie things together so it looks put-together as well as just add some color.
I would also change the curtains out to either a white, light grey, or some sort of graphic pattern using the two. (I showed a stripe fabric just to demonstrate). Also, unless you think they would get in the way or something, I'd run the curtains all the way down to the ground instead of stopping at the sill.
Anyway, here is the picture of items I put together kind of showing the big-picture type look I had in my head:
