Somebody once wrote that there were over 100 7-foot+ players under age 24 in Chinese high school, college, etc bball leagues, in a "nation of midgets" implying nefarious shenanigans, but I chalk it up to that many tall people in a certain subsect of society in a country of 1.4 billion people. Similarly, I guess they have more super short yet athletic gymnast type girls.

Yeah, they've been called out for lying about their ages, especially during the Beijing games. Look at those girls; no way they were old enough. But there's no way to prove it.

They're really small for 13 year olds, but still completely believable. I'm guessing 1/25 maybe 1/50 of 13 year old girls are about this size, so in a country like China that's a still a huge pool of athletes to choose from if thats their idea of a prototypical gymnast. Not sure that's a great strategy considering we have ripped up adults like Simone Biles crushing them.

i can believe it now. chinese people can probably tell how old they are from their mandarin skills. i mean look at simone biles. she looks less than 16. especially for a black girl. she's also 4'9. if she didn't sound old/educated, you could put her in a group of 5th graders and not notice.

Also Kocian looks pretty damn young too.

im just saying its a different scale. chinese girls don't look 16 in american years until they are 25

a lot of american girls look 16 at age 11.

There is puberty data in another thread but i'm not in the mood for that kind of research.
