As a person of south Asian descent that was born in a Caribbean country that most people think of as part of Latin America, and who’s typically mistaken as a Latino, I’ve checked all sorts of boxes in my high school and college years— the boxes don’t make sense when being asked for your “identity” for a diaspora identity.

In 8th grade, when teachers pre-fill your end of grade tests, my teacher put me as “multiracial”. when they called out if anyone needed corrections, I looked at the options Asian or Other and awkwardly said out loud I should be “other,” having never been to Asia. The whole class chuckled

I know now that for political and statistical purposes they would want to count me as Asian, but this doesn’t become clear until youre an adult who’s followed politics

This entire thing is wildly silly and it actually is sinister than ny times received this information from a literally well know white supremacist and published it anyway.

You can say its sinister and that's fair, but your example doesn't really apply. It's a pretty official looking and very clear document asking for your RACE

Your race... ie your descent as you put it

I don't even think this is a big deal--maybe he just didn't think of it, or felt like his identity was being neglected and did it out of spite, but I don't really get why people are trying to make this seem like it isn't very straightforward... when it is, and very much so

It’s most likely he was being cheeky because he technically is African American but I also don’t think race is a clear cut concept for a 17 year old immigrant from various backgrounds. I was younger than Mamdani was when he first came to America and still didn’t learn about a huge number of common racial tropes and stereotypes until college.

This is not the same as Elizabeth Warren who never had any connection to indigenous people — that was much more of a situation of “stolen valor”. What makes this egregious is this is easy to see but times ran with this bad faith framing anyway.

I'm not gonna talk about this again, and I don't mean that rudely, but just in the sense that I don't want to keep on saying the same thing over and over again.

He is not technically African-American. African-American specifically originated and is formally and informally used as a term for American Blacks. Hence, the image with the form says "Black or African American". That's not a "stereotype", it's just a very basic thing

Even actually native immigrants from Africa in today's time aren't really under that, but that's a whole another thing we don't even need to get into here

And as I said earlier, it doesn't really matter, cause like you said, he could've just done it for whatever reason or no reason at all... but, don't act like 16-17 year olds are idiots. I did these same forms and apps a few years ago myself.

And to be honest, if he didn't know what an African American was at 17, when his dad is a professor of "Africana Studies" and with him growing up in New York City... that's a bigger indictment of him then him knowing what he was doing... he moved here when he was 7

^^ Thats not the social media and public reactions to the story though— Thats what actually impacts public perception. Thats what makes the times reporting irresponsible here. It’s a non-story that spreads false insinuations seeded to them by a white supremacist.
