i havent BSOD'ed pre-sp1 vista yet that i recall and that's been a year off and on dual booted with a macbook pro. they won't let me get sp1 off of windows update. TJB627 informed me that it was probably that it didn't recognize the drivers i had (since i had to run some Apple drivers). i guess ole M$ found a way to lock out the Apple ppl a bit. anyone have a link to dl it outside of windows update?

lol i actually thought they had gotten rid of BSODs with vista, cause i've never actually personally seen a BSOD on vista or freezing in general. Only freezing i've ever seen was from overclocking.

Damn these people must have some old shit. I have more driver problems on windows XP than i do vista. I never really have to install drivers on vista if i reformat, it does everything, whereas on XP i have to individually get various drivers. Kinda annoying. My game controllers actually work better on vista than they do on XP.

^My damn all-in-one printer keeps fucking up in XP also. I can't figure out the issue. Works fine in vista. Plus my REALLY REALLY old cyberlink remote control requires a driver in XP, but works w/o installing one in vista. The wireless 360 controller seems to work a lot smoother in vista too.

Windows 7 i think is supposed to be out late 2009/ early 2010.

-but then again all my hardware is new except for that remote which might explain my lack of driver issues.

drivers written for Vista are worlds better than XP and previous. One of the big changes for integrators with Vista was Microsoft closing tons of driver loopholes, forcing 3rd parties to adhere to much more strict standards in driver development.

Hence the long delays, because of higher cost for back compatible drivers.

yea you can hax0r dreamscene video desktop to work with any version of vista by swapping the DS.dll's and a reg edit but I actually want the animated backgrounds that are abstract enough not to be distracting yet pretty pleasant to stare at once in awhile.

It disables when DX10 apps launch I think.

The biggest bottleneck would have been system memory which you clearly have plenty of.

^Again vista home premium does not have dreamscene as an option. It's a hack. Vista ultimate is the only one with dreamscene. If you use the dreamscene hack on Vista it requires modifying windows files, and it runs slightly different as i understand it. So again, not relevent in a hardware comparison it runs slightly different when hacked.

I think I'm going to keep vista installed. having my 360 as a media center extender opposed to the old method is definitely nice. I just wish my audigy 2 worked completely. This Realtek HD onboard audio is finicky at times.

Why'd it only take them 2 minutes on the macbook air but 2 days on vista sp1? I guess the guy was prepared.

-Supposedly they were allowed to install flash/java on the vista machine so they could find an exploit. Without any third party software like flash or java they weren't able to find an exploit and would have tied with the linux box. Which is pretty impressive for vista.

ah good old vista. seems very stable on my machine. no crashes as of yet. some hiccups here and there, like for example after i open the lip of my laptop it will flicker once or three times, and on at least one occasion it reset the display setting to something very low, and i had to reset it, but at any rate, it was stable. i did not use vista before sp1 so i cannot compare them, but however vista with sp1 is probably worth installing over xp right now if you are casual to a high-moderate user. but if you are into dev'ing or use your pc for your work, like if you are a graphic artist, you might want to get some peer advice before you upgrade xp, otherwise you have my blessing to upgrade

has anyone used an unattended XML file during vista installation to PERMANENTLY and COMPLETELY change the location of the "users" directory (my documents) to another partition? josh mouch's solution is 1.) very complex and 2.) seems to have problems with certain updates

best i can come up with is re-installing with the unattended XML...and yes, it's a pretty big deal for me to have it done like this

hmmm, could it be that the wireless usb mouse I am using, which is about 2 years old isnt quite 100% compatible with Vista? thats where most of the delay seems to be, clicking and moving stuff... some delay when switching applications... do you all have the sidebar open? gadgets etc? did you change any settings?
