So we know where all the money Jimmy was sending home went and glad it finally made it there.

haha same here. i was hoping he'd do a "firing gun" move with his hand at some point
and since i love presidential history, some fun facts about harding:
Quote : | "Harding is seen as one of the worst presidents in American History. Much of this is due to the number of scandals that his appointees were involved in. He was important for keeping America out of the League of Nations while meeting with key nations to attempt to limit arms. He created the Bureau of the Budget as the first formal budgetary body. His early death probably saved him from impeachment over the many scandals of his administration.
Events and Accomplishments of Warren G. Harding’s Presidency:
President Harding's time in office was marked by some major scandals. The most significant scandal was that of Teapot Dome. Secretary of the Interior Albert Fall secretly sold the right to oil reserves in Teapot Dome, Wyoming to a private company in exchange for $308,000 and some cattle. He also sold the rights to other national oil reserves. He was caught and ended up being sentenced to one year in jail.
Other officials under Harding were also implicated or convicted of bribery, fraud, conspiracy, and other forms of wrongdoing. Harding died before the events affected his presidency.
Unlike his predecessor, President Wilson, Harding did not support America joining the League of Nations. His opposition meant that America did not join at all. The body ended in failure without America's participation. Even though America did not ratify the Treaty of Paris ending World War I, Harding did sign a joint resolution officially ending the state of war between Germany and America.
In 1921-22, America agreed to a limit of arms according to a set tonnage ratio between Great Britain, the U.S., Japan, France, and Italy. Further, America entered pacts to respect Pacific property of Great Britain, France, and Japan and to preserve the Open Door Policy in China.
During Harding's time, he also spoke out on civil rights and pardoned Socialist Eugene V. Debs who had been convicted of anti-war demonstrations during World War I. On August 2, 1923, Harding died of a heart attack" |
summary: he's perfect for this show

Quote : | "5. You Will Learn to Love with a Man Missing His Face: Jack Huston's Richard Harrow, the sharpshooting war veteran who has a dark cavern where half his face should be, returns in episode 10 and is featured prominently in both that episode and the next. Harrow builds relationships with Nucky and Mrs. Schroeder, while continuing to collaborate with Jimmy on the necessary-evil skull-crushing side of the Prohibition-era hooch business. His gravelly voice, his chilling killer instincts, his ceramic half-dollface and his broken heart make for a mesmerizing and strangely lovable character. Hear this, producers: If Richard Harrow is not made a series regular for season two of Boardwalk Empire, we will be very, very cross. " |

b/c he is all about being "good" and "moral" and i think he thought having the money there was too much temptation for him to use it himself and become dirty, so his only choice was to send it on

i think you are right. from what we have seen Van Alden is a "by-the-book" kinda Fed who has good morals and ethics. the fact he is very religious plays into his decision making as well. the fact he whipped himself for having impure thoughts of Mrs. Schroeder should be telling enough of the man he is.11/9/2010 8:46:02 AM |

Totally disagree. He most certainly isn't ethical. He is a self-righteous crusader who will bend and break the rules to stop what he sees as evil. Everything about his character points to this. He is a Flagellant for Christ's sake. He is the exact opposite of "by-the-book" (See tracking down and basically torturing a wounded man to get information he needed.)11/9/2010 9:14:33 AM |

He is good and moral insofar as his own religious and personal ethics are concerned...problem is they have no place in any type of law enforcement....so you're both right, in a way. 11/9/2010 9:28:33 AM |

Just watched last week's episode. Really enjoyed it. Jimmy will of course be closer to Nucky than he ever was, even if Nucky treats him like shit at first and belittles him like a child. I think Mrs. Schroeder sitting down at Nucky's desk was also very symbolic.
Bring on more Harrow, glad to see he'll be around in AC. 11/14/2010 2:49:30 PM |

can we assume that Van Alden's partner is on Nucky's payroll since he killed the witness and kept the telegrams hidden? or is there something else in play here?
great episode though, was pissed when it ended; wanted to see what happened next. shit's getting real for Nucky now.. surviving a hit is gonna take the gloves off and he's not gonna hold back in going after who's responsible. should pave the way for some excellent future episodes. 11/15/2010 9:18:53 AM |

^^^Unless there is a future twist involved, I thought they made it pretty clear that Nelson's partner is on Nucky's payroll. No other clear reason for him to a)let Nuck in to see Darmody (remember he told him that "the legal system isn't [his] way to freedom," meaning Nucky knew the witness was about to be killed) and b)shoot the witness that was going to testify against Darmody. Van Alden is definitely in cahoots with Nucky. Like you said, unless there is something we're missing
Also, HOLY FUCKING GOD I LOVE RICHARD HARROW...amazing.
Was just able to finally get caught up (was about two episodes back all season, which kept me from checking this thread out). This show is just completely and utterly phenomenal. IMO, it's better than Treme by just a hair and it's HBO's best show since The Sopranos, The Wire, or Deadwood. Incredible characters and amazing actors. Be a straight-up travesty if the supporting cast and Michael Pitt aren't nominated for awards for their performances in this show. And I'm not someone who usually cares about acting performances, but there are a lot of standouts in this show (the three Michaels, Steve Buscemi of course, just the entire supporting cast). 11/15/2010 3:01:33 PM |

People hated on The Sopranos for being too introspective and full of psychobabble, but history exonerated it...I imagine the same will be true for this show The subplot with Jimmy trying to take out Luciano was somewhat frustrating though, since we all knew it was going to be interrupted before it's conclusion.
