none so long as the injectors and lift pump are fine, IMHO. 03-04 had some injector tip issues and the earliest models still had a 47RE instead of the 48RE; that's about all I am aware of to look out for 10/1/2012 7:49:57 AM |

ok where would the 48re have to be built to shit? 10/1/2012 8:24:45 AM |

powerwise?
lightly built = ~500-550whp (triple disc converter, valvebody with servos/accumulator, rebuild, billet input) in my opinion, though, with a 4x4 truck I'd do all billet shafts, and upgrade the clutch packs as much as possible.... you never know when you need to do a 25psi boosted launch in 4wd... you know, stoplight in front of the hooters, walmart parking lot, etc. 10/1/2012 8:32:19 AM |

Just for the sake of discussion lets say you had a 12v with a cylinder or two out on one end, or a hole in the block (on one end) or even just a perfectly good engine. Now cut off two cylinders.
Aside from making a 4cyl crank, headers, cam for it, and capping off the open end of the crankcase (w/bearing and such), what else would be involved in making it a running 4-cyl cummins? I don't know much about the fuel pumps but obviously the firing order/timing would have to be modified. Coolant passages? What else? 10/1/2012 10:10:21 AM |

hahaha no I didn't know that
they pretty common? I still want to find a suitable motor for the diesel locost, and I don't know if I'd be 100% satisfied with a VW motor. I ASSUME that the cummins would be less expensive per HP (also heavier of course), but I've already shown what I know ITT.
edit: know of a good resource to find dimensions and weights on the 4 and 6? quick search not turning up specifics

you can measure one in Jeepman's garage, he's got a 6cyl.
'bread trucks' are the most common available mechanical injection 4bt, paired with an auto that i cannot remember what is is (700r4?). Anyway, you can get rotary & inline mechanical injection in the $2500 range, however there are commonrail models, but look to pay $7k for that shit paired with a transmission

All I know is you take the turbo of a gas vw with exhaust mods etc and put it on a diesel with some injectors and such your at 200 whp an shit tons of torque.

Personal best! left at ~7psi, peak boost was ~51psi. unfortunately adam's phone was nearly dead so nogo on the vids. He got a vid of a previous run, but not sure of status... tried to launch at 10psi and it broke traction, let of and hit it again. 10/4/2012 10:28:35 PM |

haha, yeah. I felt sorry for the guy in the mustang that I paired up with for my 3 runs (Mach-1/auto/intake/exhaust/tune/drag radials)
- the first pass we were neck and neck the entire way - second pass I broke traction while trying to stage with 10psi, let off at the green, and hit it again ~3 tenths later than him on RT... only to come blaring past him with an 8.69@87 to his 8.97@82. I was only hitting 35psi peak boost on that run. - turned up boost regulator before last run and ended up beating him by 0.7955 10/5/2012 8:49:46 AM |

and i don't wanna 1 up your truck...
i have no words to describe how bitchen i think your short box diesel is.
I may fuck with the f150 if my first mod motor goes well but if i get a diesel i wouldn't go past a tune and maybe bigger injectors... cause i'd use the shit for boat/car towing and wouldn't want it to sit on the side of the road. 10/5/2012 11:28:29 AM |

I'd love to see the curve from a load cell dyno - on an inertia dyno the operator has to stand on the brakes to get it to spool. I'd imagine it would not be 'peaked' as much with the torque curve

So who amongst ye wants give my truck an ol' twice-over and help me develop a performance plan of action? I've got my own ideas from doing research here and there since I bought it but due to time and finances most of the work I've done is in situ or preventative maintenance.
I would appreciate eyes-on from someone with experience, not conflicting info from fanboys on internet forums. There are a few maintenance (troubleshooting) items too that I'd like some advice on, as well as general "this is how this shit works in a cummins" advice for someone still learning to work on diesels. I'm gonna be in a new world of salary come next summer so I'll be able to start turnin some bolts, but I won't be in Raleigh anymore and don't know if I'll have any good resources where I'm going.
I'm feeling lots of beer and a grill will be involved

Dr Pepper All American 3583 Posts user info edit post |
^oh, yes. i hate to admit I don't know the actual measurement, but the basic take is 1cc of fuel rate is somewhere between 1 and 2hp.
right now the plan is new comp wheel, new dv's, increase injection timing from 19deg to 24deg, and hopefully swap in my set of +60lbf valvesprings. My current setup benefits from lots of rpm, so I'm hopefully going to be shifting my peak power curve to a more usable range. 12/24/2012 10:10:42 AM |
