VIOLENTMAW - yeah, I played it at my buddies. Only spent like an hour with it. I would liked to have played more. It certainly looks amazing and the story was engaging. That said, the game play isn't as impressive as the story/visuals. I think it'd be a great game to Gamefly, because you could beat it in about 20 hrs.
As far as PC gaming goes. I know it's better, my cousin is a huge PC gamer. But I'm too lazy to/frugal too keep a gaming PC running at full capacity. I would also wager to say I wouldn't be smart enough to get the mods to work. I'm a traitor to my generation, the least tech savvy 27 year old that exists (probably)

it seems like MS is having an identity crisis with XB1. not that that's a bad thing, but it seems like they're trying to take on everything as a challenger. now it's Steam for cloud based gaming. and the cable box for proprietary input while still trying to best Sony in classic console gaming.
so you're the xbox...what is the main goal? to be the best at one thing or good at several things? is your main competitor Steam? or sony? or time warner cable? 6/14/2013 8:23:31 AM |

how long does the average "full game title" take to download over XBL or Steam? I've only ever downloaded one full title, Little Big Planet, during the whole PS hack fiasco a couple years ago. and i just let it d/l over night.
i'm curious because i have the lowest internet speed that U-verse provides. It's fine for Netflix, streaming, and online gaming. But I imagine if I were to buy a new release title on release day and be forced to download it that I would be waiting a LONG time before I can actually start playing. Where as disc based gaming still provides instant access. 6/14/2013 9:44:09 AM |

Maybe they will allow preloading like steam does.
My Internet is garbage but steam downloads faster than anything else does in my experience. Most games take me a few hours but massive 20+ gig games like Total War games take all night. 6/14/2013 10:16:04 AM |

so pre-loading would essentially allow you to pre-order the game and download the core of the file. and then have it finish and go live on release day? that makes sense. 6/14/2013 10:31:58 AM |

The comment about them being able to make assumptions that you have kinect, broadband, and new technology brings more requirements is pretentious, but I somewhat agree. I've been trying off and on to setup an HTPC for years and anyone that has finally set it up to their liking knows that most likely a metric fuckton of time went into it. If the XB1 can come even close to offering the experience of 40 man hours of XBMC or MediaPortal integration with a cablecard, spotify/pandora, NES/SNES classic games then sign me up. 6/14/2013 10:43:59 AM |

the cisco/sciatl 4600/8600 series should all support it. idk about older ones, but u could try to find the data sheet for your current model online (good luck). either way its always been my experience that if I need to swap old equipment twc will jt (especially if you have a technical reason like cec support) as long as its the same tier (ex: old hd box for new hd box, not old hd box for new hd dvr box). 6/14/2013 1:22:40 PM |

never used steam so i dont know exactly how it works, but i read some other ideas from other xbox one articles. basically you preorder the game and it starts downloading, say, the day before the release date, but is restricted to play until midnight of the release day. that would be awesome to get a game at midnight of release day without having to stand in line all night.
just read that article from the ms engineer. they should just copy that and issue a press release.

^^ all the demo units running xbone games (and probably the ps4 ones as well) are windows pcs (not xbones).
^ y'all need to get on some steam cause it rocks. even if ur comp sucks there are tons of old games for cheap you can run. get on there when the summer sale hits.
Anyhow, the way steam preloading works is you buy a game before release, it goes in your account. Then at some point the publisher sends the final stream release to steam and says "turn on preloading x days before release" so then when the preload starts everyone who preloaded it will have it automatically downloaded on their computer w/ the critical bits encrypted. Then when the release happens (ex: 12am release day) it unlocks, decrypts, and maybe downloads a handful more files and you can start playing.
it has 2 benefits. 1) users w/ slow connections can make sure they have it for release day and 2) it spreads out the load so everyone isn't trying to download it the day of release. 6/14/2013 2:23:31 PM |

^^That is how Steam works, welcome to 10 years ago (quite literally). Console features are usually delayed by 10 years compared to PCs, so that matches the cycle pretty well.

I feel if Valve really executes this "Steambox" idea well, they could give both Sony and MS a run for their money. This console generation just doesn't have the graphics advantage that most console generations have enjoyed for the first 1-3 years of their life cycles. Both of them are basically running tablet CPUs with 2 year old GPUs. A $1000 PC purchased today would basically last you the entire generation of playing console ports. 6/14/2013 5:05:42 PM |

even the 360/ps3 graphics are "good enough" though. why do we always end up talking about specs, when that often isn't why people buy consoles.
is it awesome when they have good specs? sure do people use that as a way to pick between them? sure do people get excited when a new game looks really nice? sure
but it isn't the major/only reason. 6/14/2013 5:08:09 PM |

i think pretty much all of the demos we've seen that were actual demos (not videos) were running on PCs. It makes sense since they're both x86 this generation and with xbone you know its gonna be windows/directx for development so it makes sense to just compile a generic windows build for initial testing instead of going thru the headache of connecting up a dev kit. idk what development tools they use for playstation, but i imagine its opengl and either vs on windows or maybe something on Linux. But again, just make a windows compile cause its easier to deal with during development. The MGS V demo was running on a PC so we know sony's tools have windows as a compile target.
I would be interested to know what tools they use for development for the ps4 cause that was a real problem for them last generation, and if this time they can just fire up VS with some additional build tools its a huge win for everyone.
As far as the NVidia stuff goes, they probably just wanted to make sure they had the best hardware they could get to limit performance issues that might crop up in pre-release code. Since its demoing xbone games its all directx so its no biggie. I'm sure the release code will have optimization for the specific amd hardware.6/14/2013 6:22:29 PM |

That's the best thing in all of this. I'm hoping that this will mean even more ports to the PC in the future, and the port situation is already pretty good. Granted the console exclusives will never be ported but here's to hoping nearly all the cross-platform games get a PC version.6/15/2013 3:44:37 PM |

One thing that is yet to be determined is will the consoles be packaged with games at launch.
Will the Xbone try to make up for the $40 difference in price with the PS4 with a free game? Will either console come with a game included?
(I say $40 because the Xbone is $100 more but the PS4 doesn't come with the $60 motion camera) 6/15/2013 4:06:43 PM |

^^^ I have been saying this for years.
Once we have the next gen consoles, we should see much better PC games in terms of graphics, AI, physics and hopefully gameplay. Everyone knows the reason we have been getting DX9 ported PC games for the last 8 years is because of the XBox and PS3 hardware. Now what SHOULD happen is games are designed on the PC and ported to the consoles, however that is probably too hopeful.
Two games I am hoping deliver are The Division and Watch Dogs, although with Watch Dogs coming out for current gen consoles, I am hesitant about putting too much hope into that title.
I am more excited about the NVIDIA Shield than I am anything else coming out in terms of hardware. I don't own a smartphone and my laptop is from 2005 (Pentium M + ATI X300 (on a 1920x1200 display..)), so I feel like the Shield could fill a lot of my portable needs outside of just a gaming device. However streaming games from my NVIDIA Gaming PC to the shield while laying in bed does sound badass, same for NVIDIA Grid streaming to the Shield.
$350 is about as much as I would pay and thank God for having a NewEgg Preferred Account so I can get one with 6 months no interest.

With the new gen, I don't see much of an improvement in graphics in the videos so far. What I have heard is that they bring more potential for expansive level-making. I think we won't see a jump to much better graphics until 2020+.
That being said, I don't care about graphics as much as I do gameplay. 6/17/2013 10:31:52 AM |

^I watched this at 1080p and maybe the PC is a bit clearer at certain points, but I fail to see any difference that would make me stand up and take notice. I certainly would not think that the minor (if any) improvement of the PC graphics would somehow make the game more enjoyable.

well that's obviously a last generation game. but the pc version has noticeably better textures and lighting. but what BlackDog was talking about was that when developing games for current gen consoles they don't bother to take advantage of the way superior capabilities of pcs. they develop their games around the console constraints and then maybe turn on certain engine features for the pc version and ship some higher quality textures. That's about it. Now that the newer consoles are coming out developers will have a higher base target. The consoles are still out of date, but now their hardware is only 2 years old instead of 10.
essentially once this new generation comes out developers will finally start taking advantage of the hardware capabilities that have evolved out of pcs over the last 10 years. 6/17/2013 2:00:25 PM |
