*a blowout loss to Iowa.
But I like I said, I don't think there's a case to be made between OSU(if they beat UW) and Bama. I think there is one between a 2 loss Clemson team and Bama though (I think Clemson should still win that argument.)
And SOS is why I believe the B1G champion will be the #4 seed regardless of who it is and what happens elsewhere. Both teams had cake schedules (OSU had all their toughest games at home and got blown out in one of two road games against a non-terrible team.). Even if Oklahoma loses and another ACC or SEC team gets in the playoff, I'd expect them to be the 3 seed over UW/OSU. 11/29/2017 12:33:24 PM |

a lot of you havent heard the committee just reiterate that conference championship is the thing they most value. They also said that 5-9 are all really close right now. That means the only way for Alabama to get in is for TCU to lose. Miami and Ohio state will both be in if they win and clemson will certainly fall below BAMA if they lose.
These are elimination games for everyone except tcu. 11/29/2017 12:44:14 PM |

Agreed! Right now there are five P5 schools with less than 2 losses and one of those is Wisconsin, so this shouldn't be rocket science. You have to look at it from a basketball perspective. Teams that win their conference tournament don't always get the best tournament seed out of all the teams in their conference because sometimes they aren't the best team. They just happened to win their tournament. Football needs to be treated the same way. Auburn now has 3 losses and Ohio State 2. You have to give Alabama some credit for only losing once.12/3/2017 2:46:59 AM |

in any normal schedule year, i would say put alabama in but they haven't beat anyone so its hard to make that case. saban was on svp saying they beat #3 fsu with francois and that they played a different fsu team.
[Edited on December 3, 2017 at 2:52 AM. Reason : bama is clearly one of the best teams and would be a favorite (2nd) to win it all] 12/3/2017 2:52:00 AM |

You can say Bama hasn’t beat anyone but I look at tOSU and they get credit because the B1G every year just inflates records by beating nobody then play each other once they move up the rankings. If your only quality wins are against your own conference and those teams only have quality wins in your own conference how good are those wins? Wisconsin looked like it would be 7-5 in the SEC.
As a conference the best out of conference win I saw was maybe Penn St over Iowa St? Unless I’m missing a better one. They create the illusion of quality wins by playing and beating nobody OOC then beat Wisconsin who plays a JV schedule then claim they beat top ranked teams. I know all teams play some soft games but most conferences have some quality OOC wins they have none I saw. They have some bad OOC loses though. If Wisconsin is considered a quality win based on their schedule then UCF should be in the playoff. They have wins over Maryland, Navy, Memphis(x2) and South Florida who beat Illinois by more than Wisc. If Wisc was #4 and a quality win for Ohio St. as a reason for them to be in then UCF should be in with better wins than Wisc and no losses. 12/3/2017 4:46:52 AM |

Alabama hasn't beaten anyone.
Look, I'm the first to shit on B1G teams for shitty schedules, but bama's is just as bad + no conference championship. It's a joke if they get in. The committee already tried to give themselves a reason to put Alabama over OSU by ranking Fresno State last week for some ungodly reason and they lost this week.
Alabama's best wins are over LSU and Mississippi State. Ohio State has wins over Wisconsin, Penn State and Michigan State, all of which are better than Alabama's best win. That plus the conference championship more than makes up for that blowout loss to Iowa. This really shouldn't even be a discussion as it's a pretty cut and dry decision. ESPN is just playing this shit up, Alabama has no realistic shot at the CFP. 12/3/2017 5:18:12 AM |

^if you account for the weird WTF loss LSU has to Troy they are a pretty good win. Not sure that should be so easily minimized.
My point being how do we know Penn St and Wisconsin are good wins and that much better than LSU? LSU has a win over Auburn. Who did Penn St beat this year? Who did Wisconsin Beat? Michigan St is a quality win, the so should Miss St be they are pretty much the same. Michigan St beat Penn St who beat nobody. I know the transitive property doesn’t exist in sports but at the same time I don’t like elevating an entire conference on the circular logic that they all just beat each other so they must be good.
Michigan St got ran off the field by Notre Dame who lost to Georgia who Auburn beat. LSU beat Auburn. I’m more comfortable giving credit to wins in the SEC because they have beaten more quality outside of just beating each other.
Also we just ignore losing to Iowa big time? How does that not matter?
tOSU gets in and I won’t be shocked when their conference goes like 1-7 in bowl games. I’m just not sold when watching the teams in the B1G they are that good I think they all rack up wins against bad teams then move up the rankings by week 4-5 and start beating each other. Watching the game last night I found neither Wisconsin or tOSU looked as dynamic or athletic as Auburn or Georgia. Heck I thought USC, Notre Dame And Miami are more impressive than tOSU and would all beat Wisconsin.

There is also a point where it’s more than just wins and losses. Have to actually look at teams and rosters. Alabama was handling Auburn then sports happened. That roster is loaded and they are a top team if you just watch what they put on the field. A bad half doesn’t change that. tOSU is young at spots and looked average several games this year vs a soft schedule. If Bama had beaten Auburn but had a 30 point loss to Florida we wouldn’t be including them so why tOSU?
I guess I just still view the SEC as strong and give that schedule credit. It’s still the best overall athletes and it might have shifted some the past few years but it’s still the hardest in my opinion. And that’s just from watching those teams every week. 12/3/2017 10:36:01 AM |

Because that is how the committee has them ranked. And the committee decides who will be in the playoff, thus they believe Penn State and Wisconsin and Michigan State are better than LSU.
This is all about creating drama for TV ratings and website hits. They came out last week and said #5-#8 were extremely close in their rankings. #5 Alabama didn't play, none of the teams they beat improved their resume either as Fresno State lost and will drop back out of the top 25. #8 OSU beat Wisconsin, giving them their best win of the year and pushes then above Alabama. In any case, one of the tiebreakers for comparable teams, which Alabama and OSU clearly are, is a conference championship.

Yes we would. Also in this scenario it gives Alabama a better win AND they would have played in the SEC championship game.]12/3/2017 10:42:23 AM |

^I still say losses need to count for something. Five teams have 1 loss and the rest have 2+ losses. Pick 4 of those 5. If you want to look at who the best team is then ignore what types of games they played and just look at their overall record. Not all divisions are created equal. The ACC, SEC, and Big Ten have a really tough division and a really crappy division most years. All though you can argue the SEC East and West were about equal this season. 12/3/2017 11:52:56 AM |
titans78 All American 4035 Posts user info edit post |
^^ Assuming you are only looking at the metric of the committee rankings as meaning quality wins but why won't they look at the loss against Iowa? That is the worst loss on the board, and it wasn't a fluke 3 point overtime loss. So tOSU has the best win and the worst loss.
My point is that I simply don't think Wisconsin is that good. I don't think the B1G is that good. Problem is we won't really know until the bowl games when teams actually play some real OOC games but by then it is too late to matter. 12/3/2017 12:02:45 PM |
