I don't think hockey qualifies as a major sport, it's in the 2nd tier with soccer and golf. Or I guess really 3rd tier since football is probably alone in tier 1. 5/21/2019 11:13:09 AM |

I don't know why I posted that bc I don't want to argue, but I wasn't ranking watchability, I was ranking American popularity. Seems like that defines a "major sport" imo. 5/22/2019 9:21:27 PM |

or we could do it by payroll. NHL teams have a salary cap of ~$80 million. MLS teams have a cap of ~$4 million. those numbers don't seem very comparable. The NHL is clearly behind MLB/NFL/NBA in terms of value in this regard but still waaaaaaaaaay ahead of MLS when it comes to North American sports leagues. 5/22/2019 10:02:26 PM |

I don't know why anyone even brought up pro leagues, the discussion is about the sport in general. Almost every HS in America has a football, baseball and basketball team, how many have hockey? Same for college. Smaller colleges often don't have football bc of numbers, but I don't think anyone would argue that football is #1.
I don't really care where you put soccer and golf. And if you want to call hockey "major", that can mean whatever you want I guess. But hockey is, at best, a distant fourth.

Of course hockey will have less participation at the high school level. It has more barriers to participation than almost any other sport. You need ice.
And I mentioned MLS because we were talking about American sports. Not European leagues. If soccer was really a major sport in the US, MLS wouldn't struggle as much as they do. 5/23/2019 1:12:41 PM |
rwoody Save TWW 37671 Posts user info edit post |
Damnit i said I wouldn't argue but MLS struggles bc it's a 10th tier league. The g league, minor league baseball, ans these startup pro leagues struggle too. And yes hockey has a barrier to entry but that also results in less exposure and fewer fans. 5/23/2019 2:13:49 PM |

Quote : | " Last year’s turnover came mostly on defense, where four key linemen and seven overall starters had to be replaced before the Pack fell 16 spots in Def. S&P+. This time, it’s the offense’s turn. Drinkwitz is now head coach at Appalachian State, and Doeren has to replace a nearly 4,000-yard passer (Ryan Finley), a 1,000-yard rusher (Reggie Gallaspy, Jr.), two 1,000-yard receivers (Kelvin Harmon and Jakobi Meyers), an all-conference tackle (Tyler Jones), an All-American guard (Terronne Prescod), and a Consensus All-American and first-round draft pick at center (Garrett Bradbury)." |
Quote : | "State was 76th in passing marginal efficiency and a horrifying 118th on passing downs. They were excellent on third-and-short to medium and horrible (90th) on third-and-long. If they weren’t sacking the QB in pass rush opportunities, they were getting gashed repeatedly." |
Quote : | "Huxtable has a lot to prove, too. He inherited from O’Brien a defense that had averaged a 38.7 Def. S&P+ ranking from 2010-12, and he has had a lot of talent, but he’s only cracked the top 40 twice. There’s upside and experience here. But there has been upside and experience for a while." |
Quote : | "I’ve long talked about NC State as maybe the most baffling program in college football. The talent it has sent to the pros — from Philip Rivers to Russell Wilson (mostly, at least) to Torry Holt to Mario Williams to all those recent draft picks to Roman Damn Gabriel — is excellent. And yet, Doeren just became the third coach ever to win nine or more games twice with the Wolfpack (the other two: Lou Holtz and Dick Sheridan). No one’s done it three times, and to date, no one has led them to an actual AP top 10 finish." |
Quote : | "Per S&P+, State is a favorite by double-digit points in four games and a heavy underdog in one. Seven games are projected as one-possession games, and if the Pack split them, that puts them in position for another finish between about 7-6 and 9-4. Considering whatever answers they find offensively will be underclassmen — as few as two or three seniors will start on that side of the ball — that’d be a solid result for what amounts to a second straight transition year." |
Nothing necessarily earth shattering in this preview but it’s also nice to have stats backing up what our eyes tell us (bad run game, underachieving D, bad pass D, efficient pass O, etc).5/30/2019 9:37:01 AM |

^^ The baffling program part was really stupid, though. We've had some names, but so has almost everyone else. We've achieved at the level of our overall talent for the past 30 years or so, with perhaps an outlier here and there.
We killed it in 2003 on the recruiting trail....Rivals' 7th best class..but it's the only time we have even been in the top 20.

^I get what he is pointing out, but agree that it's unnecessary and is useless in this type of article. Can you really find a CFB team that has produced so many NFL stars, particularly at QB, in the last 20 years that doesn't have a conference title and only 1 double-digit winning season?
I think it's a stupid metric, but it's definitely an anomaly for a non-powerhouse football program to produce so many NFL QBs in the last 20 years.
The more important aspect is that Doeren continues to churn out good/productive NFL players and teams/schools/recruits have taken notice. Doubt we produce another 4-5 guys this year, but if Doeren can continue to develop and get guys into the league, our recruiting should continue to improve. 5/30/2019 11:09:50 AM |
hey now Indianapolis Jones 14975 Posts user info edit post |
Good point but it's really on 2 qbs.
Wilson and Rivers.
I mean TJ Yates is the NFL equal of Glennon and Jacoby...and UNC isn't parading him around as a notch on their belt. The jury is still out on Finley but who doesn't expect a clipboard in his future? Not knocking it, it's still an accomplishment.
Not buying the underachieving narrative in football.

I mean we’ve had one #1 overall pick and now 5 QBs drafted into the NFL in the last ~17 years. That’s really damn impressive and our best season was 11-3, 5-3. And I don’t think his point was *that* baffling or unnecessary (it had context imo, but I understand taking it as an insult). Nobody is saying all those guys are HOFers. But you can put our list of QBs up against anybody in the conference and ours might be most impressive yet we’ve got the least to show for it.
I would say only a couple programs in the ACC have had less of a “peak” over the last 20 years than us. That’d probably be UVa and Cuse. Obviously we’ve maintained a good level of consistency...just really consistent mediocrity. Nobody is saying we’re a laughing stock. But it’s pretty accurate to point out that we have underachieved. That’s not really inaccurate imo.
There is plenty of luck involved in some of those teams’ successes (Wake winning the acc in a down year for example). But i think it’s fair to say that given some of the great individual talent we’ve had, our lack of hardware is somewhat Surprising

^^But until Trubisky, Yates was all UNC had to hold onto.
We have Wilson, Rivers, Glennon, Brissett, Finley. All 5 of those guys are currently on rosters and 2 of them are "stars'. How many teams have 5 QBs on NFL rosters right now and have 4 guys in the league that have started multiple games?
I don't think a great QB translates to a lot of wins or championships, but it's certainly a huge position. It's just an anomaly that a team like NC State has churned out 5 NFL QBs with 3 different HC's and even more OCs. 5/30/2019 1:54:36 PM |

I am okay with the noon games as long as we keep winning them. We’d be the type of team where we play all of our games at noon, get ranked in the top 4 of the CFP, only to lose to some 7-5 Pitt team in the ACC Championship because it wasn’t at noon, resulting in us getting bumped out of the CFP. 5/30/2019 5:29:40 PM |
