I don't know why you think Batts would transfer? That makes no sense. He is a freshman and needs to develop more.
Yurt7 likely going pro and that will be the biggest loss, we need the rebounding.
RARELY do you see a freshman ACC center do well.

Yurt is gone, everyone needs to give that a rest. Fairly certain he addressed the crowd on Senior night with the rest of the seniors.
This opens the door for Simons if he wants to play college ball, if not, we'll be bringing in a post-grad big. We'll be a nice landing spot for any post-grad big looking for immediate minutes and a chance at the tourney. 3/5/2018 2:55:50 PM |

^^No one can with any certainty of accuracy. After how surprisingly good we were this year, we could either see continued growth from what turned out to be the best coaching hire of the century, or we'll take a step back as too many of the current pieces will leave and/or other teams figure out more and more how to beat us. 3/5/2018 3:21:47 PM |

Hard to predict next year without knowing what the actual roster will look like.
In general:
Daniels + Bryce >> Freeman + Hunt. Adding Harris makes our guard depth better. Another year of development for Johnson, Beverly, and Dorn could be really beneficial. Losing Yurt hurts. Adding in a lot of bigs that are question marks at this point. I expect us to add in a post-grad big to compete for starting minutes.
Still have to see if we have any early/surprising departures/transfers and see who we bring in. I don't see the expectations for next year really dropping compared to this year barring some really bad departures for us(Johnson or Dorn mainly). 3/5/2018 3:34:28 PM |

It could be rough losing all of our bigs.... but Lennard and Abu were pretty ineffective during most of conference play. It may not be much of a drop-off there. Maybe.

As others mentioned hard to say, depends on how leaves and who stays. We're losing both Freemans, Abu, Hunt, Hicks, and most likely Yurt7. Transfers: Daniel Daniels, CJ Bryce, Blake Harris, and Derek Funderburk. Signees: Ian Steere, Manny Bates, Jericole Hellems, and Saddiq Bey.
So losing 6, and getting 8. Out of the 6 we’re losing I’ll say around 3 have a significant impact on this year’s team. The 8 incoming players I’ll say fits Keatt’s up typo offense and pressure defense nicely.
I thought this year would be a down year and next year we be good. Now my expectations are pretty high for next year. Do me a favor and watch a highlight of Daniels. The kid can play, so well rounded and feel like he has potential to be a star next year. Really excited about him. All of the transfers fit into Keatt's system nicely. I think with a point guard in Johnson and all of the scoring weapons we'll have next year I think we'll be a better team. Don't want to get ahead of ourselves but thinking at a minimum a NCAA birth is the expectations. I want Yurt to stay but think him leaving won't really hurt as much some may think. He's a good player but doesn't really fit Keatt's system that well due to his lack of speed. 3/5/2018 4:06:12 PM |

he should be more immediate impact than a true freshman, yes. but still will be an adjustment in competition level. it's hard to say, but i think there's reason to be optimistic about him. 3/6/2018 6:58:52 AM |
LudaChris All American 7946 Posts user info edit post |
Funderburk will likely start at the 5 barring a post-grad transfer. Really hard to tell how long it will take him to adapt to the competition level(playing in the ACC is a LOT different then playing JUCO).
The thing working to our advantage is that, we should be better at 4 positions and worse at 1. And to make it even better, the 5 position isn't as important as the other 4 in our system. So in theory we shouldn't ask a ton of from whoever plays the 5(crash boards, set screens, dunk). I could see it being fairly bumpy early, but could see things come together by conference play. 3/6/2018 9:25:59 AM |

Losing Abu, Freeman, Yurt will hurt a ton. It doesn't matter who comes in behind them (unless its blue chips, which it is not) ... Abu and Freeman provide more than many of you give them credit for. They are mature, strong, seasoned bodies who at times have been critical role players. You can't replace them with a grad transfer and some freshman. It will be night and day difference. 3/6/2018 12:24:02 PM |

they are perfectly replaceable. you're right that a freshman (or any newcomer) is gonna have a hard time replacing some their intangibles like their leadership...but their roles and productivity on the team are very replaceable, especially by a grad transfer. abu has been downright bad at times this year, displaying poor shot selection and poor defense. i'm not trying to shit one on of our own guys, but he has been unproductive and ineffective for large chunks of the year. overall, we'll have a drop off at the 4/5 next year. but it won't be because we're missing abu.3/6/2018 12:32:25 PM |

Abu's most frustrating quality is the bad fouls. I swear there were 6 straight games where he pushed in the back to get a rebound.
Freeman i think will be harder to replace. He certainly has the maturity that you ^^outlined to his game. Not to mention physical maturity/strength to hold up against other bigs.

yup. the problem (if you wanna call it that) with freeman is that we don't really play him and yurt7 together much...so his time has been limited. but when he's getting his minutes and getting in rhythm, he's been more productive than abu. his minutes have just been very up and down because of yurt being so good and getting the majority of minutes. 3/6/2018 2:25:54 PM |

I think the leaders on the team are Allerik and believe it or not Braxton. I don't see leonard or Abu acting as a leader or being vocal. I rememeberd Keatts called them both on that earlier in the year. Leonard was good in the beginning of the season but fizzled out in ACC play. As fo Abu some blame it on injuries but he's been the identical player he's been the past three seasons. I think Yurt will be the biggest blow for the bigs but I thin the incomming bigs we have are more suitable for Keatts system. How long it takes them to mater it is yet to be dteremined but I'm confident wth Keatts coaching that they'll have a solid impact on next years team. 3/6/2018 2:39:10 PM |

Yeah Nards minutes have decreased as Yurt has improved. Nard is more of a 5 so it’s very hard to play them both at the same time. So the majority of the minutes go to Yurt. 3/6/2018 3:42:10 PM |

Keatts needs to work some magic with the last couple scholarships he has available for next season. Replacing Yurt and Lennard down low is the obvious issue, but he's already spent three roster spots on that. I think we're likely to roll with the guys we have there unless the perfect grad transfer falls into our lap.
The more pressing issue is that we're losing about 150 threes from a roster that I don't see much replacement for. Beverly if anything is likely to play less minutes in more of a Hunt role. Expecting more out of him seems unlikely, while Bryce and Daniels both seem more like Dorn-level shooters than specialists who will give us the needed volume, although it's possible we'll be pleasantly surprised after they spent a year working on their game.
Still, even if that's the case, we need another guy, if not two. It'd be nice if we could get some indication on what's going on with Simons soon (NBA draft is a ways off, so not sure that's in the cards) because we gotta find that Al Freeman type combo guard one way or another, and there aren't a ton of those guys available. I'm less worried about Keatts finding the "stand in the corner and jack open 3s" guy, seeing as he pulled Hunt and Ambrose Mosley both from the dregs of nowhere the last couple years...but he'll still have to convince someone to come here for what will ostensibly be a bench role, and that's not always easy. 3/15/2018 9:44:19 PM |

Yurt is 90% gone. Batts, is what, 70% gone? ...and that's a conservative estimate
Then there's always one surprise departure but we're running out of guys that could leave. I figured Markell and Dorn were ~10% each, but Torin sure as shit didn't sound like he was going anywhere in the post game interview. 3/16/2018 1:47:24 AM |

Yurt isn't ready for pro ball period. Its not even close. Leslie and Brown were far more prepared but still weren't ready. He doesn't have the athleticism to give him the potential that would make up for the lack of skills. He needs to sharpen his skills probably for 2 more years. Its a total delusion due to his size and %.

he's slow and soft. how does he fix either of those things by coming back? either some team likes his chair workouts and lets him sit on the bench as their 13th man now or next year, it's not really going to matter. i mean i guess you could shoot him full of roids and send him to workout with the football team during the summer but he'll still be a goof moving his feet and we'll still suck at rebounding because he never in his life learned what a box out is
i'm not super excited at the prospect of a guy who is shooting 28% from 3 and averaging 5 boards a game at a JUCO being a starter for us next season either but shit happens 3/16/2018 2:31:41 AM |

thats the worst aspect of this generation's attitude. no you don't throw your hands up and quit. you put in 2 more years of hard work and fine tune your skills.
guys who don't have the raw athleticism have all the reason to stay and develop their SKILLS.
become a guy who's shot is automatic. that can happen by shooting thousands of shots in the gym and solidified in high pressure big game moments. i've seen plenty of guys shots advance tremendously between year 3 and 4. its the only way he will ever see the floor.
not fast? learn how to position yourself correctly defensively. Its something you have to get enough reps at that it becomes habit. Its rare that underclassmen are ever great at defensive positioning. He doesn't have the athelticism to erase positioning mistakes.
not athletic? hit the gym and practice footwork until you are that craftier than the 40 year old at the y who has all the moves.

Yurt could certainly benefit from coming back, but what is the incentive? He can go pro, he'll 100% get drafted, and he can develop while getting paid. Before the Seton Hall game he was quoted saying that he was hoping it wouldn't be his last game playing for coach Keatts. Why would you even make that statement if you weren't 100% convinced you were gone?
I thought Yurt was a late-round 1st earlier in the season when we were playing well, but his weak finish and showing in the NCAA Tourney might have slid him back into the 2nd round. Still, some team is going to take him, too much upside, he's a 7 footer than can shoot 3's.
Next year our guards/wings could be some of the best in the ACC, but we're going to have a huge question mark at the 5, but we should have more bodies/athleticism across the board. 3/16/2018 9:28:01 AM |
