AMEX Platinum FTW

Chase Sapphire Preferred had a decent signup bonus, but Reserve is better

Lots of 100k point offers out there for airline cards, but the redemptions aren't great.

Anyone interested in the Wells Fargo Active Cash 2% Card?

Also, will Chase answer?

Nothing wrong with it. I don't have an existing relationship with Fidelity, and seek to limit my financial entanglements. I got the message on Wells Fargo. My hope is that Chase will feel the competitive pressure to launch a similar 2% card, and then I'll go for that.

Not everybody derives the same benefits from or even likes travel, nor wants to juggle a dozen cards and try to remember what's the most optimal to use at any given time, so 2% flat seems generally better than 1.5% flat. Citi Double Cash has been around awhile, but it's more like 1% + 1%. My spend isn't high enough to where this worth a lot of hoop-jumping. I have three credit cards. All Visa, all Chase. Would prefer to stick with Chase.

To each their own, just not sure why someone is bothering with a credit card strategy thread if they're content with 2%.

Not a credit card offer, but thought I'd share anyway. I have a Citi Thankyou Preferred card that I keep around just for bigger tech purchases - they offer a 24 month extended warranty after the manufacturer's warranty. Never gotten to use it until this past month.

My Pixel 3, purchased Oct 20, 2018, decided it wanted to join the masses of Pixel 3 phones dying out of the blue, one month shy of being 3 years old. Started the claim online - they had me take it to a repair shop for an estimate or statement of no fix (UbreakIfix does this for free and is the official Google Repair shop), submit receipts, copy of the initial warranty, statement, and photos. Did all that in a few days, and in just over a week I got an email saying my full claim was approved. Just got the check for $856 - great experience overall.

^^ this is the right thread

i use a 2% card for whenever i'm buying something that doesn't qualify for higher % on another card, and haven't been in the manufactured spend game for a long time...so I use it a lot.

Why do you need a thread if you're just going to put everything on one 2% card?

LOL. I'm seeking opinions on said card in a credit card thread. I didn't realize that would be so controversial. Please carry on with my compliments.

Coinbase's card gets 4% back in a couple of shitcoins like Stellar and 1% in Bitcoin. It's a debit card with a $2500 daily limit. No fees on purchases, selling, or transfer of USDC which is dollar based. Having USDC earns the same interest as my state employees money market accounts do.

Not sure if debit cards count.

Went with exxon. Had to use some fleet gas card from work. Comes to about 135 a year rewards at exxon. They do like a monthly special were you earn a few bucks extra for filling up on certain dates, etc etc.

$135 a year based on how much spend or how many gallons? What's your typical daily average mileage, or just something for situational comparison?

Bout 120 gallons a month. If you fill up with premium etc etc etc, you get .07 per gallon back

[Edited on January 5, 2024 at 3:40 PM. Reason : .07 if fill with 100 gallons a month]

I recently bought a Tesla on my Chase Freedom Unlimited, then transferred the 1.5x points to my Sapphire Reserve for the 50% bonus on travel redemption.

Double-win--for another year or two while I'm still eligible for SCRA benefits, the interest on the card is only 4%, which is far less than any car loan.

How much of the total bill for the Tesla did they allow you to pay with a credit card?

^^^^^ are you able to find redemptions on chase travel that are actually getting 50% bonus? What I’m seeing each time I compare a flight through the carrier is that on chasetravel it’s 1.5x the cost.

Yeah, sometimes. It's usually not 1.5x the cost...but I pretty much only redeem stuff through the chase portal when it's the same cost as elsewhere. I have maybe 140k or so Chase points...eventually I'll burn a bunch of them on something big.

The other thing is that I have a ton of Marriott and IHG points, and for that matter, a few (<10k) Delta points, maybe 45k United points, and 75k AA points. That's even after burning prob 8-10 weeks of vacation last year because a new company was gonna take over and I was gonna lose it all. I don't use any points unless I'm at least breaking even versus just paying for it--so sometimes I just end up paying outright.

The problem with not redeeming rewards (which I often fall into myself) is that the points are constantly being devalued, and that holding them is like being in a non-interest-bearing account.

Yeah, that’s true…at least with something like Chase points which are fixed to a dollar amount.

I think that every time I go to the grocery store (2-3x month), I'm gonna buy $1000 on a Visa gift card and put it on my Marriott Bonvoy card (4x points at grocery stores). Plus I'll get Publix or Winn-Dixie points.

Then I can buy money orders and deposit them, and use them to pay off my boat loan. I financed through a dealership at 8.99%, partly for convenience, and partly to avoid depleting all my cash or having to sell off any investments (I'm kinda gun shy about not having stacks of cash readily available). I figured I'd just suck it up for a couple of years, then hopefully refinance the boat once interest rates are lower.

That will score a ton of rewards points, and it will also have the debt at 4% instead of nearly 9%, at least for the next 18 months or so while I'm still enjoying Chase's SCRA benefits on my credit cards.

I don't know if I'll have the Tesla and the boat paid off in 18 months, but I can put a pretty big dent in it, especially without bleeding so much in interest on the boat loan once a good chunk of it is at 4% (plus I'll put a couple thousand per month additionally against the boat loan, so it'll get paid off quickly). Worst case, I bet I can do a home equity loan for way less than 9% by mid-2025 when the SCRA benefits go away.

^^ Duuuuuuuude. Wow. That is pretty extreme, haha.

I bought a $500 gift card (Visa debit card) a few weeks ago. Bought a money order at USPS with it. No issues.

I bought two more over the last couple of week, but this time it's not working at USPS to buy the MO. Not sure what the deal is.

Tried a different gift card (all 3 PIN enabled). It only worked that first time. Not sure what the difference was.

Man that would be nice to grab points all over the place and exchange 9% money for 4% money.

I just got an AmEx Platinum a couple of days ago. Hopefully I can get the fee waived at least for the first year as military, until I retire (seems unclear whether they do it for Reserves or not. Chase always has on their cards, so we'll see.)

Capital One and WalMart are ending their partnership. So no more 5% on Walmart purchases.

We do pretty much all of our grocery shopping through the Walmart app and get it delivered to our house (Walmart+ is worth every penny for us, fwiw).

Any good credit card recommendations for Walmart? Or am I better off to just use my 2% cash back there now? I know some cards have the rotating categories that feature Walmart once/year.
