Go shopping at century 21 (downtown across from ground zero) and Anthropologie--there's a huge one in Rockefeller Center--with a giant sale room.
Do not do a Statue of Liberty cruise tour. it's a waste of time & money; however, ellis island is really interesting. Be sure to take a walk across the Brooklyn Bridge!!
If you're staying in a hotel, do yourself a favor and check out reviews on TripAdvisor. Beware of BED BUGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
All the bars were really expensive. Get a fifth, get drunk and walk around in Times Square instead.

yea - we have anthropologie in nc!!

anyways we are flying into LGA on friday around 1030. do you people recommend cabbing it or going on the bus then train? it all sounds overwhelming but i'd rather not pay a $$$ cab fare if the bus is like $4 dollars but i've heard horror stories. and we will have one small suitcase. any advice?

i went to some karaoke bar on 27th and 3rd ave the other day and that whole area sucks a big ball sack. The bars suck and are expensive and filled with douches and LI folk (shiny shirts and crew cuts)

the karaoke place came out to 37 bucks a person for all you can drink and 2 hours which was fun tho.

if it's your first time in NY or you just plain aren't that familiar with the buses and subways I would definitely not go that route from the airport...it's a bit of a pain in the ass and requires a bus ride to harlem and then catching the train.

I'd just take a cab or take the bus service recommended above...it drops you off at either Grand Central or Port Authority...there might be more options on that

The area you'll be in is not the greatest for going out. Basically a bunch of fratty type people just out of school...not very diverse.

I've done the LGA to bus to subway before and thought it was a piece of cake, so long as you only have one bag each. The bus was pretty crowded, but so is nyc. I prefer flying into JFK, even though it is further out, b/c you get to ride two trains, instead a bus. I like the longer train ride, but I enjoy exploring public transit in big cities...

I going to nyc next weekend, so I'm getting excited. Anything going on next weekend I should check out?

^^^if you want to get hammered go to Off the Wagon on MacDougal Street. It's just south of West 3rd street, north of Bleecker Street, and east of 6th Ave. It's by the West 4th Street Station.

Saturday and Sunday its beat the clock. Domestic pitchers start at $4 and go up in price $0.50 every hour till 7...at which point they stay at $8 all night. During the week Happy hour is 12-8, and the entire bar is 1/2 price. EVERYTHING.

6 of us are staying a night in NYC on Oct 15th on the way up to Boston for the BC game. Most of us have never been, or hardly been. Where is a good (relatively cheap) place to stay? We will have a Tahoe to park, so we were looking at staying in Newark and taking the train into the city. Any good recommendations?

^^I've stayed at the Hilton Penn Station in Newark. It's pretty nice and wasn't too expensive. Best of all it is basically connected to the train station so it is extremely convenient to get back and forth from the city.

If you're dead set on staying in NJ while visiting NYC Newark is not your best option. You might not be aware of this, but Newark is not directly across the Hudson River from Manhattan. You'd be much better off getting a hotel in Jersey City, Weehawken, Hoboken, or even Secaucus. The PATH train is your best option for going back and forth, though if you take that from Newark be ready for a really long ride.



Of course if you stay on the Hudson River you could also take the Water Taxi to Manhattan. I'm not aware of the cost difference between staying in Newark instead of the other places. It's further away so it is probably cheaper. But it's just one night and there's 6 of you so if it was me I'd want to be closer to Manhattan.

we're definitely down for staying closer to/in Manhattan. The biggest issue is price. From what I've looked at, prices near Manhattan are ~$200-300+ for the cheap rooms, plus ~$30/day for parking. Hotels outside (doesn't have to be Newark, just found cheaper ones there and looked at the PATH) are more like $100-$150 with free parking.

We are gonna take sleeping bags too (crashing on people's floor other nights) so we dont need to necessarily have 3 beds or anything.

My other concern is driving an SUV into the Manhattan area, having never been. That's partially why we though staying outside the city might be easier, but a hotel downtown does sound more appealing.

Thanks for the help, I'll take any ideas you guys have!

I've been to NYC a few times in the last couple years, and if you want to do the touristy stuff, just do it. Yeah, they can get crowded, but in the end, it's worth it. I suggest the Statue of Liberty. It's cheesy for some people, yada, yada, but make sure you go early and get the first boat across, it's well worth it. And Ellis island blew me away. Thoroughly enjoyed that, even more than the statue of liberty. And hell, now you can go into the crown (somewhat limited per day). I also did the Empire State Building. It took forever to get up there (long wait, holidays), but it was ok, but like some people have stated, Top of the Rock is a perfect option, easier to get up, great views. If your looking to keep it cheap, just walk around. Even though Chinatown is smelly, it's still funny to watch all the vendors wheel n deal.

Also, a cheap hotel I stayed at in March is the Wellington. It's not much to write home about, but it's in a great location to Times Square/Central Park and was reasonable for the three nights we were there.

^^^I did the Tribeca Film festival 2 of the 3 years I lived in NYC. It was a lot of fun seeing some of those movies. It's pretty cool attending the Q&As with directors and actors.
