Quarterbacks

As a rule you usually sign one quarterback every year, which also makes sense this year since we lose Daniel Evans after this upcoming season. You generally want a QB in every class. Should Glennon redshirt we would have a QB in every class the following year. As most of you know TOB and Bible only offer a QB after they've seen them in person at camp. Tom Savage is the only QB that has an offer after impressing the coaches at last year's team camp. Savage though verballed to Rutgers in April, so he's off the board.

One QB that has made an unofficial visit to State is Morgan Newton. Scout ranks Newton as a 5* recruit and the No. 7 QB nationally. He has offers from Clemson, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Penn State, Purdue, and South Carolina as well as others. Clemson, Illinois, and Kentucky may be the early favorites. Newton goes to Carmel HS, which is also where Brooks Michel attends. Michel is an OT that we are showing a lot of interest in.

Everett Proctor has an offer as an athlete (WR or S), but he has publicly stated that he'd like to be given a shot at playing QB. Proctor is teammates with Xavier Nixon at Jack Britt High in Fayetteville. He also has offers from ECU and Maryland. He admits to growing up a Maryland fan. The Twerps as well as WVU could be the schools to beat. The Queers are showing him a lot of interest as a QB. Other schools showing interest include Duke, UNC, Illinois, Pitt, Clemson, UVA, and VT.

Running Backs

Running back will be an immediate need for us if Brandon Barnes and Tobias Palmer do not stay at tailback. Also we only have one fullback on scholarship, freshman Colby Jackson, since Pat Bedics graduated and Cedric Hickman had to be kicked off the team for his stupidity. Colby probably won't see action this year since he is recovering from a torn ACL. Six RBs claim offers from us. Local Durham product Desmond Scott, who doesn't have a leader, is one of the 6. He visited State on our Junior Day.

Rolandan "Deuce" (great nickname) Finch rushed 170 times for 1,620 yards and 15 TDs in his junior year. He has yet to reveal any favorites.

D.J. Adams, who has 17 offers including one from State, has pretty much eliminated us from contention. He will most likely end up at Maryland.

Toney Williams committed to Tennesse.

Carlos Hyde a 4* prospect and the #1 ranked FB according to Scout comes from Naples High, the same school that Jamelle Eugene attended. He has also has offers from Clemson, FSU, Miami, tOSU, Pitt, USF, and Wisconsin. He will most likely though end up at either tOSU or Miami. He lives with his grandmother in Florida, but his parents live in Ohio. Hyde's teammate Greg Pratt also has an offer from State. Pratt and Hyde helped lead Naples to the 3-A State Championship in Florida, with Pratt being the leading rusher in the championship game. Hyde is the more bruising back that could dominate on the high school level b/c of his sheer size and strength. He averaged more than 7 yards/carry and amassed over 1,000 yards on the season. Pratt is you more smaller speedier back. Pratt gained over 800 yards last season as well as 10 TDs. Pratt also has offers from Cincinnati and Pitt.

aph319, while I was in the grocery store a few weeks back, I read the recruiting edition of Pack Pride. Well T.J. Graham basically said that having seen Glennon in camp, that if Glennon committed, he would commit right after. Shows you how much some of the incoming recruits already think of Glennnon.

Yeah I know a lot of our coaches have told guys that have wanted to commit on the spot to hold off and think about it. Ricky Dowdy wanted to commit as soon as he got an offer, but Coach Willis told him to think about it and make sure that's what he wants to do. He spent about two weeks thinking about it and when he came to visit on Junior Day he let the coaches know that's what he truly wanted to do. IIRC Coach Willis showed him into Coach O'Brien's office and O'Brien said "I hear there's something you want to tell me," and Ricky told him "Yes there is..." and well you know the rest. Ricky said that you could tell O'Brien was very happy.

I'm glad our coaches do that. Players seem less likely to back out of their commitments b/c they've actually put a lot of thought into the decision. Plus it shows that they actually care about these guys as people, and want what's best for them even if they don't attend State.

Wide Receivers

We should probably sign at least two WRs in this class. We have a lot of quality depth at this position with Donald Bowens, Darrell Davis, Jarvis Williams, Owen Spencer, Jay Smith, Steven Howard, as well as the return of Geron James. Throw in speed freak T.J. Graham, and we have one heck of a WR corps. We have no scholarship senior wide receivers on the team.

Quintin Payton had this to say after his Junior Day visit:

Kinsman Thomas of Marlboro County HS in Bennettsville, SC has been offered. He has other offers from South Carolina and Vanderbilt, and is also getting interest from Alabama, Clemson, UNC, and VT. Here's what he has to say. One thing going for us is that he is friends with Terrell Manning. We have also offered his teammate Tariq Edwards who plays LB for Marlboro County (more on him later). Last year Kinsman caught 30 pass for 601 yards and 9 TDs.

Bryan Underwood visited State during the first spring scrimmage. Underwood plays for Cleveland Heights High in Ohio. He caught 40 passes for 573 yards and 7 scores last season. He also fielded kicks and return 19 for 396 yards and took one to the house.

Unfortunately I think we may be a longshot for Underwood. He has a pretty nice list of schools that have offered him. Other schools that have offered him are BC, Cincinnati, Colorado, Kansas, UNC, Texas Tech, Tulsa, WVU. Pitt, tOSU, Nebraska, Indiana, and Iowa are also recruiting him and have probably offered as well.



While we probably would put Zach Greene at CB, he could be a potential option at WR for us, should he commit (he better damn commit considering his parents went here and he plays with Bible's son ). Greene caught 45 passes for 704 yards and 8 TDs, and rushed for 110 yards and 1 TD last season. He also returned kicks. At CB he had 50 tackles and 3 interceptions. Greene runs the 40 yard dash in 4.38 yards. We would not have to worry about him qualifying since he has a 3.8 GPA. While a lot of schools are interested, especially Duke and ECU, none have offered. I'm guessing it's b/c they think he's a lock to State. Auburn, Clemson, North Carolina, Wake Forest, South Carolina, Georgia Tech, and Vanderbilt have all shown interest. Greene has visited State for two spring practices and the Red & White game. He has said that NC State is his leader. He might as well go ahead and commit. Everyone and their mother thinks he'll end up here.



Jheranie Boyd has a cousin and uncle that has gone on to the NFL. Let's hope he comes here and help him get to the NFL as well. Here's what Boyd had to say about State after his Junior Day visit.

"Coach O'Brien was real nice, he was cool and upfront with everything, the program they got going. What they did at Boston College they plan on doing at NC State. Something great about Boyd is that unlike most WRs he actually likes to block and have big blocks. That's a great attitude to have. Even if you don't have the ball, do something to help the other guy make a play. Boyd says he can return punts and kicks on the next level. Boyd is known for his 44 inch vertical leap and besides playing football for Ashbrook he also plays on the basketball team, averaging 14 points and 10 rebs.



Quan Rucker has only visited UVA and Wake Forest. He said that he liked UVA's campus and that he had a good time. He said that Wake was a school that he wanted to go to when he was little, but doesn't know now. He did have a good visit there though. He said that as soon as possible he will be visiting State with his mother. Rucker will most likely be one of the Top 10 players in the state in the 09 class (or just outside the Top 10). He plays on both sides of the ball for his high school team. Most schools are recruiting him to be a WR, but Clemson wants him at DB. On schools recruiting him to play on the offensive ball he said "I think NC State is, but they wouldn't tell me for sure". I guess if we can get him to camp is when we could better evaluate where he should play for us. I think he'll be best at WR. He only played a reserve role on defense to help out his team. He was usually in on pass coverage as a nickel back. They would put him in as a safety to cover the opposing teams speed guy, when he was moved inside. Rucker doesn't have a favorite, but is looking for a good education. He'll have no problem qualifying. Rucker has 8 offers, Clemson, ECU, Illinois, Maryland, State, South Carolina, Virginia, and Wake Forest.

OL Taylor Hansen of Wake Forest-Rolesville High and DB Perry James of Davie County High in Mocksville, NC were on hand for the Spring game. They do not currently have offers from State, but will be attending camp. Look for them to get an offer if they impress at camp.

Although Scout's page on OT Brooks Michel lists us as the only offer, he actually has offers from Kentucky and Minnesota as well. He visited Minnesota not too long ago. Michel was here for the Spring game and has said that he will be back in Raleigh to visit State in June

Rashard Smith as some of you know was there, but did you know that he amassed over 2,500 all-purpose yards and had 9 interceptions on defense last season. UNC, Wake and Vandy have also offered, and Alabama, Auburn, and FSU have also shown interest. I still don't know why GT and UGA haven't come calling. Seems odd. I guess he could have a similar situation to Zach Allen as a guy who is really good, but just hasn't gotten noticed yet.

As mentioned before LB Tariq Edwards has an offer. He received the offer in the first week of April. It didn't take long for him to try and find out more about State. He visited on April 12th. Edwards had this to say:

He had 81 tackles, 4 sacks, and 2 interceptions last season. On offense he made 8 catches for 123 yards. His twin brother Tyrell has offers from Illinois and Vanderbilt. VT may be the team to beat out if they offer. Tariq's father, Bo Campbell, played there.

Well there are other factors that recruits consider. Will they play early? Will they be close to their family? Does the school have their major? I mean hell some make their decision based on where their girlfriend is going. I know one reason Spencer Adams is going to Clemson is that his girlfriend is going there as well.

I've just got to add something about T.J. Graham, who I am very excited about and think will do big things at State. He was ranked a 2* by Rivals and a 3* by Scout. There are a number of factors that kept him underrated. He played under four different coaches and several quarterbacks during his high school career. This obviously hurt his stats. Those that saw him catching passes from Glennon at State's camp las summer know how good he can be. Tom O'Brien and staff are great talent evaluators.

Defensive Ends

Let me start off by saying I won't be able to bring the usual heat in this write up with all the quotes from the players. I'm mainly just going over who we've offered that's still on the board. We signed only one DE last year, JUCO Shea McKeen. He will only have two years to play with us. We signed 4 DEs in the 2007 class, but one of those is Antoine Holmes who will be gone next year. So signing at least 2-4 DEs maybe a priority for this staff. Had we landed Donte Moss our DE recruiting might have been over by now. Ricky Dowdy currently ranks as the second best DE in the state. Dowdy will play either OLB or DE for us. Brian Slay projects as a DT, but can play DE for us as well.


PP recently reported that we have offered a pair of DEs from Victory Christian in Charlotte. They are Sylvester Crawford and Justin Foxx. The headline for Crawford says "It's Impressive" and the one for Foxx says "It's a Big Offer". So that sounds good. Crawford has an offer from WVU as well and currently lists them as High Interest and Auburn, Clemson, USC, Virginia, Virginia Tech, UNC, South Carolina, and Duke have been recruiting him. Foxx has offers from West Virginia and Duke, which he lists both as High Interest, as well as Vanderbilt. He is also being recruited by Clemson, UNC, and Mississippi State. I'm guessing they both have WVU high on their list b/c they probably like the idea of playing together. They have yet to be evaluated by Scout and Rivals. Here's their measurables though.

We probably are a longshot for Sam Montgomery.

Duane Chisolm and Julius Forte are currently the only offered DEs on the board that have been evaluated by Scout. Duane Chisolm looks like a poor man's DaQuan Bowers (which is by no means a slight on Chisolm). I think Chisolm has great technique. In his highlight video on Rivals he sheds most offensive linemen with ease and just wreaks havoc afterwards. I think he'd be a great pickup, but I'm afraid he'll end up at Clemson. The Floridian Julius Forte has better speed than Chisolm, but isn't as strong and weighs a fair amount less. While he is getting interest from some heavy hitters like Auburn, Georgia, and Ohio State, only Indiana and State are known to have offered. Chisolm is a strongside DE and Forte is a weaskside DE. Here's some scouting info on Chisolm.

Chisholm is a good player that really seems to get after it. He needs to keep fine tuning his game, but has the tools to be a productive and disruptive defender at the college level."

We've offered 2 DEs from Virginia that are still uncommitted. Clinton Simpkins and Brian Jordan. Jordan seems to be a little undersized right now to play DE. He perhaps could put on enough weight, but I think we'd put him at OLB. Here's some scouting info on Simpkins.

Does a solid job of running twists, but will telegraph it. As a pass rusher he has the quickness to get into the backfield. Does a good job of getting his hands up when he can not get to the quarterback. Needs to keep working to develop pass rush moves and use his weapons more. Will come off the ball and engage the blocker head up and can caught at the line. Simpkins is a productive player. He comes across as one of those kids that just finds ways to get around the football. Needs to keep developing his build and technique, but he makes plays."

Jason Ankrah has all the measurables to be a good DE, and his offer list shows that he is highly sought after. I'd say he'll be at least a 3* prospect with the possibility of being a 4* once he gets evaluated. We seem to be in decent shape with him. He is teammates with the #9 CB Travis Hawkins who we have also offered. Landing Ankrah could help us out in landing Hawkins, who is being recruited by everybody and their mama.


I don't know much about B.J. Stevens, out of Monroeville, PA. He looks like he has pretty good size and strength though. We are his lone offer, but I think Pitt is after him pretty hard. BC, Illinois, Kentucky, Maryland, Purdue, Rutgers, West Virginia, and Wisconsin have been in contact. Expect his recruitment to pick up in the upcoming months. The only knock I have on him is he looks like your typical Northeastern wigger.




Two in-state players to watch out for are Parker Thomas of Mount Tabor HS in Winston-Salem, who has early offers from Duke and ECU, and Brian Johnson of Myers Park HS in Charlotte.

Yeah I was about to post that. I'm glad we are getting some nice speed on our team. Florida and LSU showed the advantage of your team having collectively more speed than the other guy (tOSU). That's one reason why FSU and Miami were so successful for such a long time. Their teams overall were much faster than the rest of the nation. I don't know what it is about the South, but it has produced a lot of fast football (and track) talent. Maybe it's the diet, the scorching hot summer weather that the players have to deal with in two-a-days, or just a combination of other factors.

speed should be a nice addition to solid football play and discipline. our last regime thought all you needed was Florida speed but it turned out that you can't win just by running fast if you get called for personal fouls every other play.

While young in post count aph has shown promise early on in his ST posting career, especially wrt recruiting. I have decided to take him under my wing and teach him all that I know and guide him along the way. It is not easy being my apprentice though. You must shave your head at the beginning, meditate before posting something you think is good so as to make sure it is actually worthwhile to post, and you must also find me tickets to games when I come back to Raleigh.

Anyone want to try and sabotage Clemson's program? We need some investigators to see if some of these kids are getting money, gifts, etc. from them. How do they pull the #1 S in the nation out of Texas, especially when he could probably go to Texas and start early on. I think everyone here would agree that 1) Austin is way better than Clemson for night life and just in general, 2) Texas is a better program and school, and 3) he would get more exposure at Texas. If I was a 5* player that wasn't from this area and could go anywhere I wanted I'd go to a program that has more to offer than Clemson, especially in the coaching department. Hopefully we don't have to sabotage Clemson and Tammy Bowden will choke with these players like he always does, but even I don't think that'll be possible with the guys he's currently getting. Tammy's one weakness though is OL. He hasn't been very good at recruiting and coaching the OL. They have to replace the entire left side of their line this season.

^^ Yeah, but they' struggled a lot against legitimate run defenses (Va Tech and BC) last year. And we know who recruited the players for that BC defense.

The easy way to recruit against Texas is to point to the division they're in and notify the recruit that Texas is in the same division as Oklahoma...That should do it, OU owns Texas, save the Vince Young era. Texas would either have to start beating OU on a 50/50 basis, or get lucky and get an at large BCS (over the media darling ND) on a regular basis for me to go there over Clemson. Mack Brown also does the less with the most, even moreso than TBowden The ACC is wide open almost every year, and CU recently has the best chance and we don't have an "OU" like they do in the big12 south like we did in the 90's with FSU.
