att fiber install went surprisingly smoothly the tech left the fiber wire running down the sidewalk in front of the house, which i was somewhat worried about..but yesterday they came and buried a new wire and i assume they will switch me over to that new wire soon. I just got a new desktop PC today and i just did a speed test

My TWC bill (300/20) went up from $65 to $80. I called in and they said $80 was the new "promotional rate," and it's normally $109!
I had them reduce it to 100/20, which took it down to $49. Seems like they realize Google isn't following through and are making up for lost time in gouging us.
And yeah, I agree about with some of the comments here. I worked with a company that interacted with some of their contractors, and it was apparently a total shit show. Their PMs didn't even understand basic provisioning and work had to be redone multiple times.
I just checked the apartments list and was pleased to see what we colloquially term around my neighborhood as "the Mexican apartments" (Wrenn Dr in Cary behind the post office) as getting Fiber. So hopefully it won't be too long before we can sign up.
A friend of mine in Morrisville got the door tag last month and just realized today she forgot to sign up--too late now!

^^Might be more widespread by then... They move very slowly. Even more so now since they've had a lot of cutbacks. AFAIK, only places wired so bar besides some MDUs are Brier Creek, Kitts Creek, parts of Breckinridge, and North Hills. So much for not favoring high income areas 2/6/2017 3:45:29 PM |

oh fuck if I know... haha i haven't given it much thought since im still 3-4 years out from when we can move back.
I just didnt know if they were still wiring new places (albeit slowly) or if they were halting wiring and I needed to look in zillow adds for Google fiber accessible lol

^I think they are still going to build out in the previously announced cities.
Otherwise they would pretty much say fuck off to Durham, Chapel Hill and Carrboro. They have built the fiber hut in Carrboro less than a mile from me but currently have not even built the hut in Chapel Hill. AFAIK nothing has been run from the Carrboro hut to neighborhoods, but I think the backhaul is being trenched now to connect the Carrboro and Chapel Hill huts to the outside world and then I am assuming they will begin running fiber to neighborhoods and apartments.
ETA on actually getting any live connections around here? Who the hell knows. Probably years. 2/7/2017 9:52:17 AM |

^I took that as the places that were on the list for future rollouts were SOL and almost all were promptly removed from the website. I figured places that had infrastructure in place were going to be rolled out although maybe on a slower timeline. 2/7/2017 3:06:54 PM |

Google just ran an ad on WRAL saying "Chapel Hill, are you ready for high speed internet?" They haven't even built the fiber hut for Chapel Hill, so I think its safe to say they are still going to be rolling out fiber even if they haven't already built the infrastructure. I don't even think they have laid any fiber in neighborhoods over here yet. 2/8/2017 7:08:55 AM |

^Yea it is kind of bullshit. We know Google Fiber is "in the area" so don't fucking advertise for a specific location when they haven't even built the backend to support it, let alone fiber to the neighborhoods and starting to bury line to houses.
Realistically it will probably be another two years before they start connecting Chapel Hill. I am hopeful Carrboro will be in a year since we have had the hut up for 3-4 months now and I am a short distance away. 2/8/2017 8:42:30 AM |

Probably looking that far down to give people time to get out of contracts, research what Fiber is, talk to friends in surrounding areas that have it, test it with them, etc.2/8/2017 4:01:23 PM |
ssclark Black and Proud 14179 Posts user info edit post |
yah ... according to the stuff i got about north hills, you can only sign up for it during your "neighborhoods" roll out ... so hopefully they're just trying to get people thinking about fiber cause they get 1 shot to sign up ...
Or so says google. 2/8/2017 6:40:02 PM |
ibnuts Veteran 487 Posts user info edit post |
^It's true. A friend is in Breckenridge and forgot to sign up before the deadline. She called and they said she's SOL. They probably won't return until everywhere else has at least gotten its first shot.
So anyone who is thinking of selling their house down the line, be sure to sign up, as it may help resale value. I'm considering moving to Morrisville and availability of Fiber will be in my top 3-4 requirements. 2/15/2017 4:01:28 PM |

So with all this news about Google halting fiber installs for new cities, what's the chance the Google sells this piece of the biz to some large cable/satellite/telecom provider?

I've had it installed for 1.5 weeks so far with their TV package. They run the fiber into the house and convert it to ethernet to run to the network box. The TV boxes can be hooked up either with ethernet or coax. They only use 100 Mbs ethernet connections which is annoying, but my coax is running at 640Mbs. The TV boxes can act as wireless access points as well. The picture quality appears to be much better than Dish so far. 3/9/2017 2:18:35 PM |

Ive been pretty satisfied with the TV package as well. Boxes are snappy and search functions are pretty fast. Being an AP has really helped with Wi-fi coverage too. Getting 900/950 on my wired HTPC. The channel guide is pretty poorly laid out though so I had to build my own list of channels. So far so good. 3/9/2017 3:52:18 PM |

I really like the light feature on the remote. The remote itself is simple to use, but I find the buttons require a lot of travel to function. The one glaring omission for me is no picture-in-picture. I also wish they would let you watch your DVR content outside your network like I could do with Dish. 3/10/2017 12:56:15 PM |

Comparing to TWC digital package
Pros of GTV:
Boxes are much faster with command response, guide scrolling, search, and DVR management. Whole-house DVR and 8 simultaneous recordings are standard with GTV GTV boxes are also wifi access points which improved coverage in my house (AC wifi standard too) Guide can be customized to remove channels you dont watch or make your favorite channels first on the list Picture is 1080p (upconverted I think but not sure on this) so quality of the picture is much better (including colors) Netflix is installed on the GTV box so you can access without having to change TV inputs Remote lights up automatically when moved and connection is bluetooth so line-of-sight isnt necessary
Cons:
Lesser number of channels than TWC digital package (no major losses based on my viewing) No music channels Remote can only control box and TV (not universal like TWC remote) No clock on the box (stupid I know but that was the easiest way for me to know the time) 3/13/2017 10:15:33 AM |

I agree with all of these. I'll add my own. This would be compared to one of Dish's cheap packages.
Pros: -Lots of channels. -Chromecast is integrated into TV boxes, so finally you can use chromecast over a wired connection. -DVR can be set to only record reruns that you have not already watched.
Cons: -No picture-in-picture -No ability to view DVR content outside of your own network. Within network only certain content is viewable. -Can't simultaneously output multiple video ports like composite and HDMI. I used to be able to mirror one of my TV boxes in a guest bedroom -No gigabit ethernet connection on TV boxes -Remote is a bit too simple without many buttons. -On Demand content is weaker compared to Dish -Only 4 apps: Netflix, Vudu, YouTube, Weather. WatchESPN would be a great addition. -I miss having a physical light on the box that indicates something is being recorded. -No AutoHop and no Primetime Anytime Dish features. -No ability to delete etc. multiple recordings. You have to do them one at a time.3/13/2017 7:40:02 PM |
