What about:
Loses the election (assuming we have one): undisputed loss, but refuses to vacate office, violence carried out by combo of police/ICE/Homeland Security/Sympathetic military personnel/Rightwing-militias against protestors. Increasing violence blamed on a growing left. Opportunistic General or Defense Secretary orchestrates a military coup to restore order and protect private property. Installs "interim government." Democracy officially dead, but capitalism ultimately saved.
" |
I said this back in June, and I was half joking, half sincere. But it's actually not out of the realm of possibilities. The more we learn about the events that took place, it becomes increasingly clear (to me, at least) that this was an autogolpe attempt. One branch of government (the leader of the executive) branch intentionally sent armed insurgents to execute members of the another (legislative) branch of government. That is a self-coup aimed at consolidating power. In the moment, I classified it as an insurrection (which it partly was). But as more details come to light, it appears that there was a more coordinated effort to send insurgents in to carry out executions of political opponents in the senate on live TV with the help of sympathetic members of a militarized law enforcement. The details of how lax security was leads me to believe that there were enough loyalists in command who allowed this breach to occur.
So here's where we are: The leader of the executive branch of government has
1) Stacked the judiciary to his benefit 2) Accused the legislative branch of being corrupt and convinced a large percentage of the population to have open disdain for the democratic process. 3) Publicly orchestrated an armed insurrection and likely embedded insurgents with the intent of carrying out hostages/executions of political enemies as well as the ENTIRE PRESIDENTIAL LINE OF SUCCESSION. on live TV. 4) Is currently making tours across the country to visit other law enforcement agencies (border patrol, last I heard)
This is a naked power grab, and there is currently plenty of indication that these right-wing militias intend to carry out further acts of violence with the aim of grabbing power within the coming days. While it's tempting to dismiss them for their buffoonery (yes, lolol it's funny that one of the guys tazed himself in the ballsack and died, and lolol at literally carrying a "don't tread on me" flag while being literally trampled to death. That shit is a little too on the nose). But the actions are still being carried out regardless, and our militarized law enforcement is simultaneously sympathetic to the cause and ill prepared to prevent it, which is a major problem.
We have also now entered an era of expected acts of political violence, currently being carried out by an expanding right-wing. Make no mistake about it, the right-wing just scored a major propaganda victory on the 6th. If they can successfully "both-sides" this public perception of who is to be considered dangerous, then there will be a growing appetite among the public to restore "order" even at the expense of democratic self rule. Obviously a lot of chips have to fall in the right order for this to happen, but we are closer to that result than we were just a month ago, and that's upsetting, to say the least. These next few weeks will really set the course for the future of the country, and I can't say I have that much confidence in our political leadership to course-correct in time. If there are not immediate ramifications to those who aided and abetted this action (up to and including members of congress and the president), then the signal will be sent that these actions are acceptable. We will not be able to just white-knuckle this thing to the 20th and hope for it to die down. This is a growing movement

Most of my election predictions were made pre-pandemic. I still think Trump could have won had covid not thrashed him. But that's a counterfactual, so we'll never know.
But if you want to come in here and take a victory lap about your primary/election predictions after we just witnessed a literal right-wing armed insurrection at the behest of a president who is attempting an autogolpe, then go off, I guess.
I've consistently warned of the emergence of a fascistic right wing growing more militant and hostile to the very concept of democracy. But you guessed Mayor Pete correctly or whatever, so good for you. Really got your eye on the prize, don'tcha.1/12/2021 6:42:40 PM |

You were basically wrong about everything, but do take your time and re-read carefully.

Go back and re-read that entire thread-- word for word. I certainly wasn't right about everything, but you look/sound only slightly smarter/more informed than earl and dtownral, so there's that.
I actually prefer to call myself a realist, yet given the choice, I do choose to remain far more optimistic than dismal, but that's mostly because I have deal with truth/facts for work, and I tend to base my opinions on facts/science/expert opinion as opposed to...whatever it is you rely on to form your own dumb/debunked opinions/predictions.
But yeah, "CIVIL WAR II: YOU HEARD IT FIRST TWW!!!1" has already been done since before you "noticed" TWW was back, and it's not driving any TWW traffic

Ok.....I genuinely don't know what you're gloating about or why you feel so strongly about me having discredited myself somehow. I'll admit that I often get the horse-race portion of politics wrong, but I feel far more confident in my ability to assess long term trends in the ideological landscape. The current landscape looks bleak. It's looked bleak for years now. There's nothing wrong with admitting that.
But I think it's unwise to feel comforted by institutions when those institutions are actively being undermined and threatened. I don't think a civil war is coming. I do however, think an era of right-wing terrorism is being mainstreamed, and most governments inevitably have to resort to extreme measures to reestablish legitimacy. How that shakes out, I don't know. But I'm not looking forward to it.
And dude, you just used linked me to a thread where you referenced another thread where you were having an argument with a totally different person and inexplicably dragged me into it in order to calm yourself down. I think you might want to pick up that journal. 1/12/2021 9:33:07 PM |

Upward mobility has been declining, and the people who tack to the right with age vote because they have the means and time to dedicate to electoral politics. The ones who age without upward mobility don't disappear, they just stop voting because they can't afford to, hence the embarrassing low voter participation in this country.
Your theory of generational politics is dogshit and it's been debunked a.million times." |
Quote : | "The youth aren't showing up to support Democrats.
That's a party wide problem, not an individual candidates problem. Alarm bells should be ringing, but instead Biden supporters are taking an ill advised victory lap." |
Quote : | "Depends...will you blame those same people when they absolutely won't show up I November?
Funny how it's his fault in the primary, and it will be their fault in the general." |
Quote : | "If you think a historically conservative candidate is going to suddenly run to the left AFTER securing the primary nomination and heading into the general, then you don't understand politics.
Just look at any poll that shows voting breakdown demographics by age. The Democratic Party has just flipped a giant middle finger to anyone under the age of 40 and first time voters. If you think those same voters are going to suddenly show up in November to support Biden then you are out of your mind. Whether or not the DNC has irreparably damaged the party remains to be seen, but it doesn't look good.
Instead of talking about Medicare for all, free college education, or minimum wages, we're going to hear about Russia and Ukraine, and be asked to decide which candidates son sucks harder. This will turn off so many voters, and this helps the incumbent in November. " |

I can't stress this enough, but you are hanging your hat on electoral norms against a Republican party that is actively breaking down every layer of the democratic process, using every tool at their disposal, up to and including inciting an insurrection against the US government.
Why you are fixated on this is beyond me. There is a much larger, far more urgent, and far more pressing issue immediately staring you in the face, and you'd rather punch to the left even as armed fascists are planning to carry out coordinated nation wide acts of violence to prevent your candidate from ever taking office. And your response to that seems to be, "I'm sure it'll be fine."
I mean....maybe. But fixating on the primaries seems an odd hill to die on.
But yeah, Biden beat Bernie, I'm not denying that. Maybe it's because Biden is incredibly popular and people like his platform more than Bernie's. And then he beat Trump, I don't deny that either.
Or maybe it's because they wanted to cast a negative vote against a president who oversaw 300,000 American deaths to a once-in-a-lifetime pandemic, massive social unrest, a looming economic recession/depression, and who is willing to literally assassinate members of congress to stay in power.
I guess we'll never know. Let's go with your assumption. 1/12/2021 10:04:08 PM |

rwoody refuses to read PERIOD, and JesusHChrist and I actually pretty much on the same team, aside from him being a Bernie Bro and me preferring Warren/the truth, but anywhoo, I have pondered deeply why Pence is so adamant on refusing the 25th...
A surprising number of people think Pence is far more intelligent/capable than he actually is. If you read up on the dude, he sounds more like total hayseed that lucked into the VP pick than some political mastermind, but my guess is that he would rather let it go to impeachment so he can join in and stab Trump in the back himself, than to be the one to pull the 25A trigger.
Still don't see removal happening, but it's cute to see all these "republicans" pledge to vote in favor of impeachment when it literally couldn't matter any less.
