Well, today is my last day, been at this agency since basically out of college but lived in several states (moved around for advancement). I have been with them for seven and a half years. I accpeted a job with another agency (promotion) and that one starts Monday.

No one wants to start a job only to find out the position was open because of unreasonable expectations being placed on the employee who held this position prior. 7. Why should we hire you? This question creates a great opportunity for you to reiterate your value proposition. If this company didn't already see reasons to hire you, you wouldn't have received an interview. Re-establish those reasons by being prepared to expand on information they already have in your resume and bring focus to those times where your involvement proved beneficial. Additionally, you may point out an area of "pain" you happen to know this company is experiencing and then offer your ideas for a solution. Nothing says, "I am prepared," like being prepared. You can't know every question an interviewer may ask. However, being familiar with common questions, like the seven above, and being ready with a response will give you a leg up on the competition."

Just a general thing-- when you are employed, spend some time every few weeks looking at job postings that match the next step in your career (as you see it). Look at the requirements that they're asking for. If you don't have them, start working on attaining that certification, experience, expertise, etc.

Even if you're not ready for a job change, apply to jobs that potentially interest you. At the least, you'll hone those interview skills, and at best you might discover that a given job is a much better opportunity than it looked on paper.

don't wait until you are unemployed, or need to scramble for a job to do these things.

Hell its even good for people who graduated four years ago LOL I started to volunteer for a place even before I quit my job. My old place of employment scaled everyone back to 32 hours and so it not only gave me more time to look for a job, but a chance to get my foot in the door where I really wanted to be. I was surprised at first, but its a win-win for everyone I guess. Now since I am unemployed, I volunteer here twice a week. Now there is talk of a few of our girls going part time and guess who may be next in line for the positions. I am already getting fairly trained up and I have established myself as a credible and socially acceptable potential employee. The ladies I work with seem to think I will have no problem getting in there. And I didn't have to go to Ohio or Texas like everyone else did While I am making no money, I can honestly say that I enjoy doing what I do more than any other job I have had making decent money.
