I recently bought an all-original 5spd IS300 and picked up a rare set of GTR-spec Panasport C5C2s. The wheels are 20+ years old, so I'm taking them apart to refinish them.
Coilovers and tires have already been ordered too.
If anyone wants a super clean Prelude Type-SH, it'll be up for sale in a couple weeks! 2/6/2015 1:49:29 PM |

^^ all you kids and your toys! I’d be curious to see it though, and I’m a bit jealous at all the tinkering and tune-ability...
^ I’m sure the wheels will look great on the car - car already looks good. I have to say I sense a bit of rice also, but hey, your 240 turned out just fine so I guess we shall see.
Me, just swapped out the GT3 cup shifter cables back to street shifter cables. Oh my, the car’s so much quieter inside, though the shifter (which I had never thought was lacking) feels... not great at first but I’ll deal.. I guess. I sort of wouldn’t mind trying the 997 GT3RS shifter console with the street cables, though, this makes me wonder if I’d want a 997 MK2 GT3. It would also have front axle lift and electronic engine mounts... :/

why are you trying to make it more street appropriate while talking in the other thread about how much you love it not being street appropriate
that line of thinking has caused you to already want something different instead of being satisfied with what you have
so how soon is this one going to be gone? you were happy with it for like a week yes? 2/8/2015 1:28:39 AM |

^^ I understand why you would say that. The appeal of the car is supposed to be how “hardcore” it is.
However, I don’t have a tow vehicle (and don’t want one for a number of reasons), and it was very loud inside. The cup cables are basically rods that are bolted to the transmission, all metal. The car is a very real 10-12db quieter inside with the stock cables. It’s still not a quiet car by any stretch with all solid bushings/mounts (and when I say that, I mean no rubber. Not at the subframe, control arms, sway bars, not even strut/shock mounts), but it’s actually quite enjoyable on the highway. Spring rate is still pretty ridiculous, but it won’t leave me with a headache on a multi hour drive to the track or when I drive it around, which I find myself doing a lot more often now that it’s not so loud!
As for “when is it leaving”? Especially after working on it, I love this car all the more. No immediate plans to sell it. Everything I didn’t like about the previous 996s/turbos, are taken care of on this car. There’s no axles/diff, driveshaft to the front, there’s no underbody coating, there’s no electrical spoilers, there’s no extra insulation (beyond the carpet), no assisted clutch, no sunroof, no complicated fiber optics, separate amps/subs for the stereo. Just a good old 4 speaker minimal system. The radiator exhaust is piped straight into the brakes. It’s a very well thought out, polished package that makes sense, for the purpose of driving. It has 3 radiators but a fan on only one of them (street Carreras have 2 radiators with a fan each. It has a heat exchanger for the gearbox, with positive pressure spray lubrication to the gear faces and bearings. Despite all this, (perhaps in part through an extremely rigid chassis), I find it livable now. -I’m sure most normal people wouldn’t, but whatever. It’s still not even up to a consistent 88db. inside at 90mph. It’s really only LOUD at full throttle above 5k rpm or so, at which point it’s glorious!
I am so very happy with it. It’s making me remember what I liked about cars! <3 I... wouldn’t mind more power, but no car is perfect. Even if/when I get rid of this thing, it will have been the best car I’ve ever had. And I feel lucky to own a car that I admire! 2/8/2015 9:04:23 PM |

Yeah, I’m mixed on the car. It both looks cool, and poseurish. It’s got something in common with your 240, but the 240 does a better job pulling it off. In fact I <3 that car! In any case, they’re both handsome. I cross shopped the Lex and e36 M3, but didn’t have the stones to go to the Japanese side at that point.
Anyway, so my junk; STOP TECH brakes on the GT3 completed, roll cage modification in progress. Just ordered parts for the MINI brake upgrade as well. Going with all factory JCW parts. Oh, and went over the hitch and wiring for the GT3’s trailer, here I come track time!! ZOMG so psyched! Mayhaps I’ll post some pics at some point. 2/16/2015 6:34:25 PM |

How did I pull off "ensuring proper suspension operation"?
First I removed the stock spring/strut assemblies
Then I
...Hold on, brace yourself, this may come as a huge shock to you...
Then I replaced them with aftermarket spring/strut assemblies.

so what are the dynamics of the 240 chassis? can the thing stop, turn, and stay neutral if desired? as cheap as it is, it seems like it might be a decent track platform, but I suspect it's very undercooled and underbraked. 2/17/2015 4:23:56 PM |

not sure how braking and cooling is in stock form..im have an aftermarket radiator and fans (sr20det engine) and 300zx brakes front and rear they are easy to work on and parts are cheap, and you can fit just about anything into the engine bay being as light as they are I would think this chassis would make a great grip setup someone asked a similar question in my 240 thread: a few posts down: http://brentroad.com/message_topic.aspx?topic=640830&page=2

IS 300: I really don’t want to defend a stanced y0! Lex, but toe seems to be a big(ger) factor on tire wear, especially on low profile tires in my experience. I’m still unsure on this thing, it does look pretty cool but maybe I’ve been too indoctrinated with elitist German crap. GOTTA BE BMW: I don’t know if the “gotta be a BMW” comment is directed in my direction, however I like the IS 300. I just didn’t like it quite as much as an e46 330i ZHP or an e36 M3 sedan, but I don’t think that there’s anything else in it’s price range I’d rather have. 2/17/2015 11:22:36 PM |

There's more to maintaining proper suspension geometry throughout the deflection range of the suspension than lowering with "aftermarket spring/strut assemblies" (how else are you gonna do it? Cut the springs? Not that doing so is a good idea, but it's not really functionally different with regard to what people are talking about here.) 2/18/2015 10:46:23 PM |

No shit.
But (do I really need to reiterate this again?) it's a daily driver and it's not being lowered into the earth.
No, I'm not going to spend money to raise the subframe, buy modified knuckles, etc. That'd be overkill for the purposes of this car.2/19/2015 7:15:46 AM |

They vary a lot based on condition and mileage. I got this one completely stock with 150k and a clean title for under 7k which seems to be on the low end for its condition.
5spd versions tend to bring better money, sell quicker, and are tough to find unmodified. Hence why I jumped on this opportunity.
It was either this or a manual G35 sedan, and I much prefer the IS300 inside and out.2/19/2015 8:18:28 AM |

It's a nice ride for sure. You have any plans for powertrain modifications? 2/19/2015 10:21:15 AM |
jawhitak Veteran 328 Posts user info edit post |
Nah. If I want to go fast, I'll drive the S13 with double the power and less weight, haha.
IMO, it's really not worth the hassle of boosting this GE engine and still trying to pass inspections. If I did anything, I'd probably shoot for a stock OBD2 GTE engine/harness/ECU, but that's loads of money too.
Again. I just want a simple daily driver that looks nice... and I'm satisfied where I am now. 2/19/2015 11:09:51 AM |

My Integra has been in the shop since February 10th. I took it in for a very bad drivetrain vibration under load and they diagnosed it as a bad intermediate driveshaft (chances are it's still original). It's been taking the shop forever to source a replacement part (nobody manufacturers new ones anymore) and it appears that every parts shop they've contacted has a catalog error that lumps the GS-R in with the rest of the Integras, which doesn't work since it has a bespoke transmission
After already receiving an incorrect shaft twice my shop is now probably going to rebuild the existing one.
Sigh, and I really wanted to have this car around to drive around in the snow! 2/25/2015 2:46:00 PM |
