Dude...if we started handing out the death penalty for murders where the victim was black, do you know how many more black people we'd have to put on death row?

I'd have to see the breakdown of races for each of the 15,000+ homicide victims

hypthetically, if 12,000 of the homicides were white people being murdered, and if 3,000 of the homicides were black people being murdered, then killing a white person should make you 4x as likely to get the death penalty, in a fair system

No one is saying that racism doesn't exist you tool.
Quote :
"And how exactly have I benefited from this injustice? Was I sentenced to life in prison for the exact same crime that a black person was sentenced to die?

Lemme check...

...Oh, that's right, I haven't. No one in this board is suggesting that racism or prejudices don't exist. Every single person on the planet is affected by the prejudices of others, and not just because of the color of their skin.

Any legitimate cases of prejudice in our judicial or hiring or housing systems need to be investigated and punished harshly but crying and spouting statistics about the racism inherent in the system will do exactly nothing.

Actually, especially in the case when you start making shit up about how there are 6 poor minorities for every 1 poor white person we stop listening to the rest of your numbers bullshit."

Yet you claim you've never benefited from racism.

Yet you admit other people experience racism.

Yet you fail to realize that by not experiencing racism, and by not working to stop it, you are benefiting from it.

I support every single law that punishes discrimination in housing and employment. I vote for legislators that support these laws.

Just out of curiosity, because I don't don a cape and fight murderers by night does that mean I'm benefiting from murderers?

Or even more curiously, does you spouting nonsense on a message board undo the white privilege that you have enjoyed?

^^You're so dense it's absurd, which is why I'm convinced that you're trolling.

Seriously, no one is saying racism doesn't exist. No one at all. No one is saying prejudice doesn't exist. Answer my question: what do you think the government should about it. I want specific policy suggestions. Don't post another comic that you think proves your point. Don't post a one liner about how I'm a racist or whatever. Stand by your assertion and offer solutions, and if you can't do that, just go away.

No idea. How do you change people's personal bias? If someone subconsciously prefers "Adam" over "Lakeshia" for a job, even if they're equally qualified, how do you change that? If you force him to hire Lakeshia, he complains that you're being a reverse racist. If you do nothing, it doesn't improve and people still discriminate.

So you make it where he subconciously prefers Lakeshia over Adam?

So now you have the hiring manager with a different bias, hiring based on different discrimination

How does that help the overall situation?

Prove that "Lakeshia" actually is better qualified for the job, then punish the shit out of the offending company in a very public manner.

If she's not, then fuck her. She doesn't deserve the job on the basis of her skin color. If they really are equally qualified, then what do you give a shit which person he picks? Why should he pick "Lakeshia" over "Adam"? Not that I believe that it's possible for two people to actually be equally qualified.

See? Punish instances of actual discrimination, quit whining about racism. Support any programs to change young black peoples' minds about effort in schools. Bingo bango, in 20 years no white person will ever have an excuse to not hire a black person unless they're not as qualified as other applicants. The achievement gap is the real problem.

I saw a special tonight on ABC News called "What would you do." It's a show where they set up uncomfortable social situations to gauge peoples reactions, and then they interview them after to see why they reacted the way they did.

For this segment, they had a beat up old car sitting in a parking lot in a middle-class suburban neighborhood. It was the middle of the day, so plenty of people were walking by.

They staged three Black youths, actors, around the car. They were beating it up, spraypainting it, and trying to break in.

Of course, this got the attention of a lot of people walking by. Some of them remarked that they should stop doing that. Some kept walking by. Many called 911 to report three Black kids beating up a car. Ten people, to be exact.

The crew interview some of the people afterwards. They said that they just wanted to protect their neighborhood from stuff like that, of course. The crew asked if they would have done the same thing if the kids were White. Of course, they said. They said that they would have even called faster if it was three White kids.

So, the crew then decides to set up the exact same scenario, but this time use three White kids. They were doing the exact same thing: beating up the car, spraypainting it, and trying to break in.

Would you like to know how many people called 911? Three.

One person called to report the three White kids beating up a car.

Two people called the police to report...

wait for it...

three Black kids who were "hunkered down in a car" looking like they were going to rob someone. These three Black kids? They were the relatives of the actors from the earlier segment who were asleep in a car waiting for the shoot to be over.

So, I guess Black people should just get over this kind of stuff and move on with their lives, right? I mean, you can't help the way people think, right? They should just quit whining about racism, and support programs to change Black peoples' minds, because I guess the problem isn't with White America according to the user above me.

Question about your news segment... when you say they set up the exact same scenario again, do you mean to imply that in the first scenario they had white kids sitting in the car while the black ones were beating up on it the first time around?

And also that they had a similar sample of passers by, at the same time of day and these people didn't know or expect that any sort of staged scenario might be going on since this was the second time?

Not that I can't buy the story, because it seems fairly believable to me, but it's not like these "special" news segments are above using rockets to get the explosions they're looking for.

No, the White actors didn't have any relatives who came with them to the shoot. The Black actors did have relatives, and they were chilling out in a car while the shoot was going. The crew didn't realize until afterwards that there had been two other 911 calls that had happened that day in the same location, and they had been reporting some "suspicious looking kids" who were literally sleeping in a car.

And I don't know the order of the segment. In the news segment they actually showed the White kids first, but I related it to you differently in that post for dramatic effect. I have no idea about the time difference between the two groups. I assume it was either later in the day or the next day.

And so I don't suppose that a difference in the number of calls to 911 could be explained in any way by in the second scenario having the car be occupied and the occupants not appearing to be concerned about the damage to their car? Unless I'm misunderstanding the set up, I know I probably wouldn't call anyone if the car appeared to be occupied and the occupant did not appear to be in distress.

Uh... no.. I'm confused about what you're asking.

In both scenarios, it was an empty old car that they were beating up on.

When the White kids were doing it, though, like on the other side of the park were the relatives of the Black actors sleeping in a different car and the hidden camera crew in a van, etc. So there was one 911 call on the White kids, and two others on the suspicious Black kids sleeping in a car on the other side of the park. That's why the crew didn't realize it was related until afterwards when they reviewed the calls with the 911 operators.

It will probably show up here in a few days:

I'm trying to ascertain how identical the two scenarios were, as your description leaves some vagueness to it, though I admit after rereading, now that I'm a bit more awake, that I misread your statement to say that they were sleeping in the car as opposed to just a car, so I apologize for that.

" DENVER — A Republican Senate candidate for Colorado apologized Monday for making disparaging remarks about tea party members who questioned the authenticity of President Barack Obama's birth certificate.

Ken Buck was caught on audio tape expressing his frustration with the so-called birthers, saying: "Will you tell those dumbasses at the tea party to stop asking questions about birth certificates while I'm on the camera?"

His spokesman, Owen Loftus, said the tape was surreptitiously made by a Democratic staffer assigned to follow Buck. It was obtained by the Denver Post and Denver television station KUSA-TV.

Buck, a conservative supported by many tea party members, has said that he believes Obama is a natural-born citizen. "

It seems like more and more often, the sane parts of the GOP are having to apologize to the insane wing of conservatives. Sometimes disparaging remarks deserve to be made.

I, too, saw this show. I love how you failed to notice the difference in attire between the two groups.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HIVgMvuCM_k

What kind of experiment is that? I guarantee that I could put any group of kids in over sized urbanwear and they will seem more menacing than if they were wearing a normal cut pair of jeans and a hoodie from a skateboard company. Any kids...Any race.

What I learned from this is that if you dress like a thug you'll get treated like a thug; ESPECIALLY IF YOU ARE ACTING LIKE ONE (vandalizing a car in the park, for instance.) Of course you'd be a fool to assume everyone who dresses like that is a thug, however this is a stereotype that was crafted by thugs and by people who want to be perceived as such. Don't like the stereotype then don't fucking copy it.

Didn't really look all that different to me.

Honestly, the major differences I saw were time of day (looks like morning and late afternoon, may affect how much people feel like getting involved), the aggressiveness of the actors (could have been the editing, but the black actors appeared to be beating on the car a lot more) and the number of people walking past at any given time.

Interestingly that last point has two parts to it. Obviously, more people walking by = more chances of finding someone who will call 911, but the other part of that is that more people walking by at once = more likely people succumb to the bystander effect.

The most useful piece of information would be not the total number of calls, but the total number of calls / number of people passing by the scene. Also useful would be number of pairs vs number of individuals, as from the video it appears that pairs of people were less likely to be confrontational (perhaps due to one of the pair telling the other to not get involved?)

Technically, that wasn't the question. After all, I was explicitly responding to TULIPlovr's rhetorical question.

To get the ball rolling on your question though. One particularly pressing concern for me right now is the treatment of people with criminal records attempting to get jobs or an education--obviously, this affects people of all races but especially black Americans. Since the Internet and whatnot, we're really getting out of control with these background checks. In my opinion, something BIG needs to be done to restore folks' right to work and get degrees and certificates and all that jazz that helps a man get by.

I'm also interested in scaling back some of these drug laws, and I suspect you're on board with me on that tip.

What else do you think make sense?

"A new analysis of political signs displayed at a tea party rally in Washington last month reveals that the vast majority of activists expressed narrow concerns about the government's economic and spending policies and steered clear of the racially charged anti-Obama messages that have helped define some media coverage of such events.

Emily Ekins, a graduate student at UCLA, conducted the survey at the 9/12 Taxpayer March on Washington last month by scouring the crowd, row by row and hour by hour, and taking a picture of every sign she passed.

Ekins photographed about 250 signs, and more than half of those she saw reflected a "limited government ethos," she found - touching on such topics as the role of government, liberty, taxes, spending, deficit and concern about socialism. Examples ranged from the simple message "$top the $pending" scrawled in black-marker block letters to more elaborate drawings of bar charts, stop signs and one poster with the slogan "Socialism is Legal Theft" and a stick-figure socialist pointing a gun at the head of a taxpayer."

I saw one of these recently. It was a rather different scenario. A bike was locked to a sign in a heavily trafficked park and the subject would steal the bike while the producers watched how people reacted. A black male trying to steal the bike was attacked and then arrested. A white male trying to steal the bike was arrested. A while female trying to steak the bike was...repeatedly offered assistance. Even after volunteering that she was stealing the bike, a crowd of people developed taking turns helping her cut the lock off and ultimately removing the sign from the ground to make it easier for her to steal the bike.

Moral says: if you want to be a criminal, don't be male, or worse, a black male.

NAACP has a political agenda. Not only that, they can't seem to forget an event that happen 170 years ago. On top of that, they don't even have the full history in perspective.

I think a fair system should involve:

1) if you work hard, you're going to succeed. If you don't like what you do or are not successful, you can do something else, work hard, and succeed.

2) If you're going to commit crime, you're going to have a punishment that fits the crime. Killing a life means an end to yours, etc... Eye for an eye.

In other words, with a cause comes and effect and action causes reaction.

Racism seems to want to die for some time now, but NAACP is just one of many organizations that keep people on that frame of mind.

The sooner they let go as an organization, the easier it will be for America.

^ uhh… what?

The NAACP’s positions have no bearing on the things you posted. You’re the one who seems to have no historical perspective.

I don’t know how many times people have to post the statistics on race in the job market for people like you to get it.

Like John Adams says, facts are stubborn things, but it appears some people are too stubborn even for facts.
