I liked the play at the start of the game when he cut backdoor for a layup and then immediately realized he might get fouled if he finished the play so he pulled up for a 5 foot running brick instead
Go back two pages and you'll find people explaining why he's better than jj redick the all time scoring leader.
But I'm considered the crazy one here 2/22/2012 10:02:23 AM |

Here we go face. We're in a different thread now, and this time I'll agree with you.
Wood needs to ride the bench for bit. Next year I don't know that he should start.

good D will shut him down unless he has plays run specifically to free him up, which for whatever reason, doesn't happen that much. His only points last night came when he ran under a screen at the baseline to get a little space since they had a guy dedicated to him 100% of the time.
It's obvious he can't create his own shot, and imo, there aren't enough plays designed to get him space.

Food for thought.
Scott wood has played 230 minutes against unc in his career and only made four 3-pointers.
Stillman white a walkon backup point guard has made one 3 pointer in 11 career minutes against ncsu.
If stillman white were on this team I think we would slide Lobo to SG, CJW to SF and Scott wood to the bench.
Also if I had a guitar like that id raise up the bridge, file down the nut, and take the buzz off the low E. 2/22/2012 10:29:18 AM |

Against BCS teams with above .500 overall records:
Vanderbilt (loss) - Did Not Play Texas (win) - 27 min - 4/9 FG (3/8 3Pt), 5/5 FT, 16pts Indiana (loss) - 39 min - 4/8 FG (3/4 3Pt), 5/5 FT, 16pts Stanford (loss) - 25 min, 3/8 FG (2/5 3Pt), 8pts Syracuse (loss) - 39 min, 3/7 FG (2/6 3Pt), 8pts Maryland (win) - 34 min, 6/10 FG (1/4 3Pt), 6/6 FT, 19pts Miami (win) - 38 min, 5/9 FG (4/6 3Pt), 7/7 FT, 21pts North Carolina (loss) - 38 min, 4/12 FG (3/9 3Pt), 11pts Virginia (loss) - 35 min, 3/11 FG (2/8 3Pt), 8pts Duke (loss) - 39 min, 1/7 FG (1/5 3Pt), 7/10 FT, 10pts Florida State (loss) - 33 min, 1/10 FG (1/6 3Pt), 5/5 FT, 8pts North Carolina (loss) - 35 min, 1/5 FG (1/4 3Pt), 3pts
(as an aside to this, our best win on the season being Miami does not speak well to our chances on making the tournament)
It looks like he played fine up to the Carolina game and since then he's fallen off a cliff. He's shot 10/45 from the field (8/32 from 3) for 40 points in 180 minutes of play, so he's making two shots a game over his last five against good competition when he's on the floor 36 minutes out of 40.
DeShawn Painter, a reserve in contrast, in the same games has a little more than half the time on the floor Wood does and has made 11 shots in comparison to Wood's 10 (Painter's stats: 107 minutes, 11/29 from the field, 28 points)
Interestingly enough, Wood did not attempt a free throw in either UNC game. You can say that's part refs which it could be but it also means Wood never attacked the guy guarding him.

its pretty simple, teams have learned not to double off of him under any circumstances, which in theory should open up the post a bit.
That works almost all of the time if we leave him on an island...alot of the game last night was essentially 4 on 4 when we had the ball. 2/22/2012 10:33:58 AM |
Flyin Ryan All American 8224 Posts user info edit post |
why not setup a scheme where you leave him near midcourt, the defender covering him will have to have his back either to the ball or to Wood or do that sideways thing of trying to watch both which means he's inferior if the play goes to the other side, and then Wood can cut for a set pass going to the top of the key and have the open three? it guarantees him to get open for a few seconds to put off his shot

Obvious shake in confidence after the free throw streak is obvious.
Stop giving this guy a hard time. He has saved our ass so many times in games that we could have lost, that we shouldn't be giving him shit for having off nights in games that we should have lost. 2/22/2012 10:49:15 AM |

Wood is just not athletic enough to pop off screens on a consistent basis vs good defensive teams, so we can stop with the ridiculous comparisons of past ACC snipers.
He is an absolute terror to defend in transition though, but he's been rendered worthless by our recent inability to get stops/create turnovers on defense.
In summary, he is who he is. A great but flawed spot up shooter who would get minutes on any team in the country. ] 2/22/2012 10:49:50 AM |

For people who say we need to work on getting him open more...do you even watch the game?? We are constantly setting screens and trying to get him open. You don't just say, "we're going to run a play for Wood" and he's automatically open. Fuck. 2/22/2012 10:57:44 AM |

Constantly huh? you must not have watched the game...yeah they set up a few screens (mostly baseline where he would run under the basket, cross court), but for a large chunk of our possessions he would hang out behind the arc and essentially be out of the play. 2/22/2012 11:02:23 AM |

He's not physically capable of running off screens all game. (vs quality defenses) Seriously.

lol, who ever said run constant screens all game? When you're standing around more often than not you don't have to run around all game to make an improvement.
On the baseline screens they did run, the defender just ran high on the screener and basically got to the spot before wood did most of the time.
i'm not saying make him the focal point of the offense or anything, but when your opponents have obviously learned to play a guy one way, you have to adapt too. It's no coincidence that we did better when he was out of the game last night, the offense flows better when all 5 guys are working together. 2/22/2012 11:15:39 AM |

When a guy only plays one way, you only have to defend him one way.
I think he should practice shooting threes on top of Howell's shoulders. That's another way we could use him.2/22/2012 11:30:16 AM |

yep, and the one way he plays lights out is knocking down shots with a little space. Thing is, there is more than one way to actually get him space for those shots. Earlier in the year, it was mainly in transition and kicking back from a double team. Teams arent doubling off him anymore, so use that to your advantage and/or get him open other ways.2/22/2012 11:47:53 AM |

I've already told you that way...put him on top of Howell's shoulders. Howell is the player that provides the most stability for Wood to shoot off of.

We should try bringing him off the bench against good teams. At his best, he's an average defender. Against good teams, he is a serious liability. When he can't get his shots, he's just another TDT out there. 2/22/2012 12:56:53 PM |

Every team in america has a slow white guy that hits shots. Just do what those teams do. This is not fucking trigonometry
If Wood is getting double teamed or guys are not leaving him, then there are plenty of ways we can use that. We just aren't.

just for fun, alex johnson makes 0.8 per game. so you know, that's a solid 8 points per game from behind the arc from perimeter players not named scott wood.

Brown is pretty bad. He's sitting at 31% with 17 threes for the year...I feel like 1/3 of those have been either a bank shot or that 80 footer in the UNC game. I've been pretty disappointed in the lack of improvement in his 3 pt shot this year. He's going to have to improve that to get some burn in the NBA.2/23/2012 6:46:38 AM |
