We would have banned guns a long time ago if it wasn't for the 2nd amendment, but I suppose that's the point...

Seems like the same restrictions on purchasing pseudoephedrine should at least apply to guns. Or conversely, remove all restrictions on anything banned for deaths, that has killed less people than guns.

I'm sure many gun owners think it possible that the guns they current possess might actually be made illegal - and I'm sure there are people who would actually like to pass such laws.

This actually presents a good point, though. A law that makes currently-possessed guns illegal has little chance of passing. But if we propose laws that make it harder to GET guns - and the laws to take effect gradually, with certain provisions making guns slightly harder to obtain over the course of 20 years or so - that actually might be easier to pass.

People care a hell of a lot more about themselves than they do about others, and about the present than the future. So, if gun control is implemented slowly and geared towards acquisition rather than possession, I can actually see some serious gun control coming into effect without a bloody civil war.

Most of the gun control measures suggested after shootings would have done absolutely nothing to stop the shooter, so if you use tragedies to justify passing gun control that will do nothing to stop tragedies, where does it end?

How about the left starts focusing on enforcing and using the gun control measures already in place? To reference the Dylan Roof example, the government's incompetence allowed him to purchase a gun through default proceed because they fucked up. The solution to government incompetence is not more government power.

^^part of that so-called incompetence is in fact baked into the gun laws themselves, either through lack of funding or through hamstringing agencies intended to enforce the laws. Things like having very short periods of time for background checks, and if nothing turns up in 3 days or whatever, then the person gets their guns. Or the fact that records are kept on paper because of federal law.

It's not that the proposed changes "don't go that far", its that they don't prevent the incidents that spur all of these gun control discussions. So if a mass shooting justifies action from the left's perspective, but the action won't prevent mass shootings, it's just inching closer and closer to a registry, and one day a mandatory gun buyback program like Australia (which Clinton said we should look at). If all of the left's unreasonable gun control proposals got passed today, do you really think they wouldn't suggest additional control following the next mass shooting?

^The FBI had reported there was a "clerical error" for Roof's gun. 90% of background checks are instant. The left incorrectly labels Charleston's default proceed as a "loophole"... In reality it's a protection against government incompetence infringing on your right to buy a firearm.
