If a couple of studs can't hold up 75lbs. I would not live in that house. I mean maybe the lighter weight TV would look better hanging on the wall if it's also got a noticeably smaller housing, but I wouldn't let the weight of a TV that's already designed to mount on the wall have any impact on which one to buy.
^ have you ever seen a side-by-side comparison? there is a very noticeable difference. and this is why:
Quote : | "The combination of content production, playback-device, and display device processing may also give artifacts that are unnecessary. A display device producing a fixed 60frame/s rate cannot display a 24frame/s movie at an even, Judder-free rate. Usually, a 3:2 pulldown Judder#3:2_pulldown is used, giving a slight uneven movement.
While common multisync CRT computer monitors have been capable of running at even multiples of 24 Hz since the early '90s, recent "120Hz" LCD displays have been produced for the purpose of having smoother, more fluid motion. As 120 is an even mutiple of 24, it is possible to present a 24frame/s sequence without Judder on a well-designed 120 Hz display. If the 120 Hz rate is produced by frame-doubling a 60frame/s 3:2 pulldown signal, the uneven motion could still be visible." |

think before you assume.
it's not a wood stud wall, it's brick masonry wall, and i'm sure it'll support the TV, but i'm not sure yet if i want to put the masonry anchors in the wall yet, so if it goes on the mantle in the mean time the lighter the better
i realize i wasn't exactly clear on this.

^^ what about tvs that advertise 1080p/24?
do those do "judder-free" playback? 7/14/2008 11:53:22 AM |
DirtyMonkey All American 4270 Posts user info edit post |
^^ sorry, i just figured that an interior wall in most residential houses would be wood framed. but yeah i would be hesitant to mount it on a masonry wall for the simple fact that those holes are a bit more permanent than what you could cover up on sheet rock.
^ from my understanding a 1080p/24 can accept signals directly from the source at 24fps so it doesn't have to do any extra processing. but you'd have to have a source (newer blu-ray players) that will send the signal at 24fps instead of 60. i'm not sure how 1080p/24 compares (if at all) to 120hz. my main point was that 120hz is freakin' sweet. 7/14/2008 12:27:32 PM |

I came really close to buying this today.
Sears had it where if you bought it with a Wii, there was a $400 rebate, making the total for both $1349.
I already have a Wii, and they're still scarce enough that I could sell it at retail price, making it $1149.
but, i had just dropped $2500 on a fridge, and couldn't justify spending another grand. 7/19/2008 9:54:05 PM |

Question to the group. I have a smallish den where I plan on putting my next TV. I'd say the room is 12x15. Would a 46 be overkill in here, or, more than enough? The viewing distance will be about 15 from the longest point and about 10 from the other seating spots.
Really liking that Viera.

46 will be big, but I don't think it will be overkill.
I used to have a 46" LCD in my living room and viewed it from about the same distances you mentioned (10-15 ft) and maybe a little further away. It was just fine, looked great, and wasn't overpowering. One thing I did notice was that the non-HD channels, although they looked pretty bad from any distance, looked worse the closer you get.
I have since replaced the 46" LCD with a 51" Pioneer Elite Plasma and still it isn't bad from a viewing distance perspective. However, your den is a bit smaller than my den/dining combo so it might feel a little different.
In fact, I think you could even go bigger if you wanted to; we've got a 52" Samsung LCD in the bedroom, again viewed from about 15-18 feet and it's just fine too. We were afraid it would be too big, but once we got it hung up on the wall and got used to the enormous physical size of the TV we have been extremely happy with it. 7/20/2008 1:05:36 PM |

^^^ 46" won't really be overkill for that room, pretty much just the right size I'd think.
Now if you want to talk overkill, I have 56" DLP which is viewed from 9 feet away. Definitely way to much for the area that it is in. When I originally bought it I was living in an apartment in SC and was viewing from 15-20ft away which worked out pretty good. But when I moved down to Atlanta I ended up buying a condo which is a lot smaller than my apartment was. If/when I sell this tv I would look for something in the low 40's to replace it. 7/20/2008 3:36:31 PM |

Why is the 800 so much more than the 80? 7/28/2008 5:39:40 PM |
puck_it All American 15446 Posts user info edit post |
because it's ten times better.
specifically, the 24p cinematic playback, more shades of gradation, another HDMI input. and THX certification.

Oh, and between the 850u/800u, the 850u lacks the THX mode, but has more color tweaking settings. Stuff i didnt really want to hassle with (and probably why he sells it for 100 less).

I have the same TV and it is excellent. I wanted the 750 because I swear it looks better, but this one actually surpassed my expectations. The only problem i've had so far is that when hooked up to my computer, by default, it only chooses 1080i resolution, and I had to download a program to force it to 1080p resolution. I also had to update the firmware to correct the white balance (it was slightly off and I looked online, and the firmware update fixed it-- I couldn't notice this though unless it was hooked up to my computer).7/28/2008 9:24:00 PM |

I'm thinking about getting the 40" Sony LCD, model #KDL-40S4100. It's definitely not the best of that size, even within the Sony brand, but I don't want to spend more than a grand.
