We were on the way to making them possibly though....now we have no chance at even making a NIT elite eight. We only made the tournament five years because our talent was too lacking to make it in the first five. 3/9/2008 12:49:44 AM |

^^ We were never going to make it past the Sweet Sixteen with Herb. His unwillingness to stray too far from his Princeton offense, even when a particular game/opponent called for it, is the reason why. His last tourney game w/ us against Texas is indicative of what I'm talking about. We weren't hitting our shots early in the game and we got down. Texas was using our lack of athleticism against us and Herb seemed like he recognized this and put in Fells and Grant. Those two, plus Bennerman, brought us back even by the end of the first half. But at the beginning of the second half, it was right back to the same ol pass for thirty seconds and then shoot a 3 shit. Teams that live and die by the jump shot rarely if ever win the whole tournament. Especially when their coach refuses to change tactics, even when it's absolutely necessary.
I'll take my chances with Sid and if he doesn't pan out, then it's on to the next guy. 3/9/2008 1:26:51 AM |

God you people just have to bring up Herb and talk shit. So much of your post is wrong it's not funny.
Quote : | "His unwillingness to stray too far from his Princeton offense," |
He brought in Larry Hunter from Ohio University in year 5 and revamped the offense. Result=start of 5 year NCAA run.
Quote : | "Teams that live and die by the jump shot rarely if ever win the whole tournament." |
See Duke in any given year especially this year. Tell me what they have outside a jump shot.
Quote : | "Especially when their coach refuses to change tactics, even when it's absolutely necessary. " |
Once again he almost completely changed the offense and we were top 5 in scoring in ACC last 5 years. And by your logic, Jim Boeheim is a terrible coach for using the same tactics for 32 years.

yeah, duke has been on the slide since the lost shelden williams, leaving them with just jump shooters. This guy is an idiot. Even if they were doing well, they are an outlier. Herb could never do what K does with the same talent.
Quote : | "So much of your post is wrong it's not funny" |
Which is why you ignored most his post about the texas game and raised some strawman argument? riiight. No one said that changing from no system to princeton was bad. He said that not changing from the princeton to something that could actually exploit athleticism was bad.
But you're an apologist and a stupid one at that, so there were lots of opportunities for you to miss that.
The only basis that you have for asserting that herb would have gotten past the first weekend more regularly than he did before is your own terrible basketball judgement. Herb made the same bad decisions up to his final fucking game, and his recruiting wasn't any better than the previous 5 years.

I'm not sure what you're getting at and I could be misunderstanding, but are you implying K gets a lot out of a little? Because a lot of people seem to think Duke teams are these overachievers but they consistently have more McD's AA's than any team in the country and have eight of the motherfuckers this year. Every year they don't make the Final 4 they have drastically underachieved.
Quote : | "And by your logic, Jim Boeheim is a terrible coach for using the same tactics for 32 years." |
Not for nothing, but his reluctance to come out of his zone has hurt the team the last two years.. big time. They should be playing man with the roster they have.

Oh, ok... well that isn't a stretch. K is one of the best coaches in the history of college bball...
I think Herb is a better coach than a lot of people give him credit for but certainly not elite yet... I think ASU might be an easier place to sell to todays recruits than NC State though... plus there is a LOT of leftover talent in SoCal to choose from.
People can try and sell tradition from long ago and Raleigh all they want but to an 18-year old the perfect Tempe weather and tons of easy, great looking girls is a much easier sell. Luckily in general the ACC > Pac-10 for east coast kids.

So you seriously think Duke has a good shot of winning the tournament this year? They beat us, a team that you can't seem to criticize enough, by 1 point on a couple of questionable calls.
They had JJ Reddick, one of the best jump shooters of all time, for 4 years, and didn't win the tournament because they didn't have enough of an inside presence (Shelden Williams wasn't dominant enough to do it by himself).

Whose fault is it that Herb didn't bring in more McDonald's All-Americans? Given Herb's boring as shit brand of offense, I'm not surprised he didn't have blue-chip recruits beating down his door. A system like that doesn't exactly highlight a player's abilities.

that's it... i'm going to spill my guts...
after having lived through 27 seasons of ncsu basketball in my life and clearly remembering more than 20 of them....
can say as an honest man that i remember the days of tom gugliatta and chris corchiani rackin up the big wins.
i remember the les robinson invitationals and bobby sura when fla state entered the conference.
and we can all remember the herb years of 0.1% excitment, but with the clear knowledge that we were going to go to the ncaa's each year. (at least i felt that way)
and then the abandonment and ridicule of the nation when we hired the circus to parade our coaching problem when herb left.
then there's last year. the hope comes alive that we -can- beat unc when they've bought the best basketball team money can bye and a great coach. and the sudden surge of momentum that had everybody thinking that we'd be getting an acc title in the next few years.
and then there's this season. wow. probably the worst performance of players and coaches i can honestly remember. this is much worse than the days, much much worse than when we were -supposed- to finish last in the acc.
i really am at a lose of words. but i still think lowe deserves at least 5 years to get this program going. somedays i wish it were 3 years though at most.
that is all. 3/9/2008 8:34:11 PM |

^^^ I was talking about the team itself at home, more so than the fans/atmosphere. And I was referring to this year more than anything, but JPJ has been a tough road game for any team to play since it opened last year. Our record against any better than average team, aka Duke and Carolina, in the RBC is pretty crappy. Not to mention we've had trouble with the below average teams at home this season.

I don't know if any of you have seen this yet, but this is a video of Julius Mays buzzer beater to win Marion's game in the regional finals of the Indiana State Playoffs. Watch as he catches the inbounds pass and runs the length of the floor in 4.7 seconds for the game winning bucket. If you notice he was also smart enough to try and draw contact and get fouled in case the shot didn't go in. You can see the ref on the baseline raise his hand to signal for a foul.
Afterwards he stated:
"I was taking it down Scott Wood's side because, if his defender switched off, Scott would have been open and I guarantee he would have made the shot," Mays said. "And if he didn't, I knew I could go straight to the hole."
So far I believe Sid in how he mentions so often that Mays has a high bball IQ.

Quote : | "Marion Loses a Heartbreaker, 40-39
Marion thought they had the game won, but Brownsburg High hit a miracle shot at the buzzer to win the Indiana Class 4A state championship 40-39 at Conseco Fieldhouse.
Marion led for much of the contest, but a late flurry by Brownsburg tied the game at 28 entering the fourth quarter before Brownsburg used a 7-1 spurt to take a 35-29 advantage with just over four minutes remaining.
After Lamar Jackson hit a layup for Marion, Julius Mays took over. The NC State signee converted a three-point play to bring the Giants within one point at 35-34. Brownsburg answered with a basket, and Mays came right back and hit another floater to bring the Giants back within one at 37-36. After getting a defensive stop, Mays appeared to give Marion a 38-37 lead with another floater in the lane with 1:05 remaining, but he banged into Brownsburg center Julian Mavunga on the play and was called for a charge, negating the basket.
The call gave Brownsburg back the ball with a lead, and Marion eventually fouled with just under 30 seconds left. J.D. Cosby hit one-of-two free throws, and Brownsburg held a 38-36 advantage. Mays patiently walked the ball up the floor, and then with eight seconds left he attacked the basket from the top of the key and drew two defenders, leaving junior Scott Wood open behind the 3-point line. At that point, Wood, a NC State commitment, had missed all seven of his field goal attempts, but this time he connected on a deep 3-pointer with 2.1 seconds remaining to give the Giants a 39-38 advantage and apparently the victory.
However, the game wasn't over. After both teams used a total of four timeouts, Brownsburg's Austin Fish inbounded three-quarter court. The Bulldogs threw a long pass under the basket to Mavunga, but the ball was batted down. Brownsburg's Gordon Hayward picked up the loose ball and hit a short layup at the buzzer, giving his team a 40-39 victory and the first boys basketball state title in school history.
Mays was outstanding for Marion. He hit big shot after big shot for his team and made countless plays down the stretch. He totaled a game-high 21 points and five rebounds in his final game for Marion. On the night, Mays hit 7-of-9 shots from the field, 7-of-9 from the free throw line, and his only missed shots were two 3-pointers. Wood, just a junior, hit 1-of-8 shots for three points. The 6-foot-6 wing struggled with his shot all night, but he did grabbed seven boards for the Giants.
Mavunga, who has signed with Miami (OH), led Brownsburg with 17 points. Hayward, a Butler signee, added 10, all in the second half as Mays did a good job of checking the 6-foot-8 guard on the defensive end.
Marion finished the season with a 24-5 record. " |
