Maybe it's optimism or craziness, but I think Franklin is still the target. I think Yow said what she said to help Franklin avoid distraction in preparing for a bowl game.... 11/25/2012 10:18:29 PM |

John's brother in law is the basketball coach at Indiana. Close enough?
And Jim's son is an intern for the Oregon State football team. Can we get him this soon?

I'd take him...but I just don't see it happening. He'll also leave in a couple years for a better SEC job. 11/26/2012 8:51:48 AM |

maybe I'm delusional but I can see the appeal of State over a job like UT/Auburn IF we're willing to pay comparable salaries.
Decent facilities/fan base without the crazy pressure of making a national championship game, a favorable schedule every year that should get you 6-6 on a bad year and the potential of 10+ win season/ACC title/BCS game if things go right.
[Edited on November 26, 2012 at 9:23 AM. Reason : clearly not a destination job but definitely a solid stepping stone job for a top coordinator] 11/26/2012 9:22:18 AM |

I definitely see the appeal of our job...I think we are the top job available besides UT and Auburn...but those come w/ extreme expectations....I think we are in a pretty good spot to pull off an A+ hire if Yow sells it right. 11/26/2012 9:27:53 AM |

Arkansas and Kentucky are both available as well, and the SEC is king. Better to overachieve at UK than come here, go to mediocre bowls, and get shouted down by our stupid fans who still think Chuck Amato was a baller. 11/26/2012 9:32:03 AM |
NyM410 J-E-T-S 50085 Posts user info edit post |
My response is how on earth could we offer similar money to any of the SEC schools? Our revenue is 50% of any of those three. He'll it's $30M less than Kentucky too.
It's just hard to compete in a $ sense with them. I would love to say Yow can go out and land a Kirby Smart type but in this years landscape I don't want to set myself up for disappointment/anger when that doesn't happen. 11/26/2012 9:36:22 AM |

Come to NC State, where you can keep your job if you have losing seasons your first 3 years
or
Come to Auburn, where we'll fire you 2 years after winning a national championship 11/26/2012 9:42:34 AM |

I'm so sick of hearing about facilities as to why we should be better/competitive/recruit better/a reason for a great coach to come here.
That might have been a factor 20 years ago but these days everyone has "facilities."
I mean what does it take, a decent weight room a flat screen tv and some Xbox games? Our facilities just keep us on par with all the other middle of the road programs out there.
It isn't nearly as big a deal as people make it out to be and it's annoying how often it gets referenced. 11/26/2012 10:41:39 AM |

Facilities matter, but it's not the main selling point. I'm not sure we have a main selling point ... more like a combo of good things:
-good facilities -good fan support -good in-state talent and recruiting base -some current NFL successes -relatively easy conference -relatively low expectations 11/26/2012 10:58:50 AM |

I think Nick Saban should show that he is in fact a really good coach and take on this project to build a national title team. Sure you can do it at LSU and Alabama but a real coach could do it at NC State. 11/26/2012 11:14:13 AM |

^^I'm not saying another school wouldn't give him a better chance to win a national championship. That aint' happening here. But I do think there's potential to win big for a long time here. From the ESPN Insider article from the 4th page of this thread...
Quote : | "From the outside, the idea of taking an ACC job might seem like the wrong direction. But everyone I talked to said the opposite -- as long as it's the right ACC job.
"That conference is ripe for the picking," the West Coast coordinator continued. "It would take no time at all to start racking up big numbers and getting BCS berths. You can make a hell of a living doing that. Just ask Virginia Tech. NC State is the kind of place that can get to that level, and in a hurry. The other ACC jobs that might be out there -- Boston College and Maryland -- they're a hundred miles behind State.""" |
