^^It makes sense. If I remember right, that team was all juniors and seniors except for Marvin Williams, so they'd already taken all the "real" easy classes they could and would have had to matriculate or drop/fail out. AFAM paper classes was their only option to stay eligible at that point. 6/20/2015 1:45:31 PM |

^^that shit pisses me off so much after hearing Roy and Fedora bitch and moan for the last 2-3 years about "negative recruiting" due to the investigation. You can't complain about other teams taking advantage of a completely real, not made up NCAA investigation while you lie about potential outcomes of the investigation. 6/20/2015 2:05:48 PM |

Can you lie to a recruit like that? 6/22/2015 11:07:56 AM |
dmspack oh we back 25532 Posts user info edit post |
^yeah you can pretty much say or promise anything to a recruit as long as you don't cross the line of giving them money, goods, services, etc.
recruiting is shady as hell. and i honestly don't care that UNC is straight up lying to recruits (nobody knows what, if any punishment will be) - but for UNC's own coaches to bitch relentlessly about supposed "negative recruiting" from other schools and then say this stuff, it's just more typical holier-than-thou UNC bullshit.
also, i've said it before on here, but the idea that "negative recruiting" is dirty or underhanded is so stupid. if all we're talking about is a rival coach saying "you don't wanna go to UNC - look at this scandal, they'll be on probation, they'll get postseason bans, etc" i see nothing wrong at all about that. while the rival coaches may be leading a recruit on by insinuating that UNC will definitely be punished - when that may or may not be the case - i don't find it to be dirty at all. 6/22/2015 4:04:58 PM |

"College sports coach" is little better ethically as a job than "used car salesman". It's just the ones in football and men's basketball are paid handsomely. In women's basketball recruiting, I don't know if it happens that much anymore, but they (not Carolina, just anyone) used to put the gossip out there that some coaches were lesbians to detract some potential recruits from certain schools.

She’s got the primary academic adviser in her program that was neck deep in it, and I just don’t see how she survives. What I discussed with one of my writers is that basically I think she gets a farewell tour this year, and I think that’s it.”" |

They have likely been planning to pin this on womens basketball or other sports for quite a while now. Even if Roy saw the writing on the wall and knew this thing was going to crumble soon that doesnt excuse the fact that his teams had been taking advantage of it since his arrival and won titles in part because of it. Its all up to the NCAA, if they dont hammer UNC into oblivion their days are over because the precedent will be set that you can run systemic academic fraud for nearly 2 decades and its totally worth it if you can snag a few titles. 7/9/2015 3:58:18 PM |

Thats great and all but the actual punishment is what matters. If they end up with a few scholarship reductions, some vacated wins, and no post season ban you dont think every other school isnt gonna start doing the same thing? Then when they get caught they will have a clear case to point at if they get anything worse and sue the fuck out of the NCAA. I still believe the NCAA will do next to nothing, this will be what leads to schools basically going out on their own away from the NCAA, and UNC will instead be cheering themselves as the school that brought down the mean corrupt NCAA that was out to get them the whole time.7/10/2015 8:16:08 AM |

We need someone to commit to us secretly, and then go in home with UNC and Kentucky asking (with a recorder) about how they are going to be able to keep up with the class load and pass tests and things like that ... just get recruiters to open up on tape.
There has got to be people willing to do some good recon for the NCAA -- surprised we dont see that happening ALL THE TIME honestly.

Makes me sad that Jay Bilas or anyone really thinks the NCAA should be staying out of this whole thing and that its not an NCAA matter. Been in a long argument with him on twitter this morning about it haha. NCAA is the only entity left who can punish those cheating assholes. SACS basically gave them a pass and UNC is definitely not gonna punish themselves. Letting them skate with no real punishment just makes my head spin. 7/10/2015 1:35:32 PM |

^^ Obvious troll is obvious. This "fraudulent college" was set up for the explicit purpose of keeping athletes eligible who otherwise would have failed out of school. UNC gained an advantage because its players could focus almost completely on practice and basketball instead of devoting time to academics the way every other school's athletes had to do. Quote : | "With the NCAA allegations, I am trying to wrap my head around how the women’s basketball team has been made the scapegoat in all of this. Our program was not the only team in the report, yet we are the ones being talked about the most. Roy Williams and his program were in the report, and he got a contract extension. The football program was in the report, and its coaching staff was confident enough to tell recruits that they will not receive any repercussions from the NCAA investigation.
That leaves the female sport as the one program negatively affected by these allegations. It’s really hard to work for a boss who doesn’t support you and have your back, and that is what Hatchell and her staff are forced to do at this point. It is hard to believe that in the year 2015, we still have people of power who do not support female teams as well as they do their male counterparts.
I am proud to be a member of the UNC women’s basketball program, but I cannot say I am proud to represented by an administration that will throw a legendary coach to the wolves to protect men’s athletic teams." |

UNC officials quickly seized on the finding to tell the public it was time to “move forward.” Shortly after, one trustee and UNC Athletic Director Bubba Cunningham said in an email exchange that the report likely dissuaded the NCAA from digging more deeply into the scandal.
Now, in a book slated for release in October, Martin says he misspoke. He believed it was an athletic and academic scandal then, and he believes it now.
“I could have said, ‘Not only is it an extraordinary athletic scandal, but it is also an incredibly damaging academic scandal,’” Martin said in a galley of the book provided to The News & Observer by the book publisher." |
