first time was two crit Heroic Strikes then an overpower crit

second time was two regular huge crits then a 2100 execute and he wasnt even sundered haha

I'd be curious to see how much you do. In AoE, there simply is no comparison in damage output. Beating a lock's 250 dps AoE just can't be done by mages.

With single targets, it depends on the build. Mages should out-nuke warlocks, but current shadow crit builds and immolate-conflagrate builds given them a run for their money.

Uhhh

Mage AoE destroys lock AoE. Good luck convincing your guild to sit there and heal you over your main tank(s) in any high instance.

I won't get into pvp, because nobody who has seriously pvp'd a lock would suggest hellfire for anything.

Umm, what on earth are you talking about? Every group I am in asks for Hellfire BY NAME. I have used it in Mara, ST, Baron (in specific), and LBRS. Makes large groups so easy. I never used it before higher instances b/c I don't ask for healers.

Warrior runs in with shield and takes aggro. Warlock runs in with shield and hellfires. Everyone else with an AoE spell uses it because all the aggro is on warlock after a few seconds. You know how convenient it is with large numbers to only have to heal 1-2 ppl? You know, there is a reason locks have high life.

Flamestrike with a lot crit gear = highest dps and most mana efficient AOE in the game. Problem is there are like 4 mages in all of WoW that know how to use it right. I laugh at mages who run in and AE in Alterac Valley, while I just sit back doing so much more damage casting flamestrike.

max level Arcane explosion is instant cast and 250dmg (give or take one or two). Thats before any +dmg arcane talents. Theres also Flamestrike(for which shrike is correct), Blizzard, CoC, and blast wave.

I guarantee you, i can not only outdamage the ever loving shit out of you in AoE, but also have more than enough snares, roots, and crowd control to keep myself alive with out a shield.

Frost spec is worthless in PvE, imo.

And only better that fire/arcane in certain PvP situations

It's good for DPS in Molten Core and not dieing as much. Also frost nova + CoC with the shatter talent works pretty well for AEing. For any instance which isn't packed full of fire resistant mobs (like Zul'Gurub) , fire mages make frost mages look like pee shooters.

Dude

Do the math.

You get bubbled, you hellfire, then the 10 mobs attackings you + the damage of hellfire.

You'd have to roll around with a protable hospital or special immunity pots not to die.

I'm inclined to call bullshit.

[Edited on October 6, 2005 at 6:21 PM. Reason : and at THAT level, you don't have that much health. sry.]

As I said, when you hellfire, most of the mobs are on you (which you said also). That means you are one of the few being attacked, which means that healers are on you. Not to mention that 1 out of 4 mobs are stunned (that may improve more next patch, not sure htough).

I am not saying it is the best AoE. Each has its place. I just can't believe that I am the only one who has heard of this being used in large groups since it is so useful and is asked for all the time.

PS: At that lvl, I have over 5k health. And Math doesn't mean shit if what is on paper and what happens differs.

Yes but cloth wearers lose about 75-90% health in 1 or 2 hits from mobs in any high level instance, which means I (as the priest) have to sit there and spam flash heal or else he dies. If anyone else gets anything else on them and I have to heal that person, then the warlock dies.

. . . unless you group is planning on the hellfire.

We aren't talking major mobs here. We are talking the entrance on a baron run, the ST groups at the center, the dragons in Scholo, the beetles/scorpions and spiders of LBRS, the LEEEEEEEEEEEEROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOY dragons. THere are many groups which this works well on. I have been in groups where some spam hellfire, and that is different. Those ppl are in their own hands.

Let me put it to you this way

In the half hour of planning it takes for you to work out with your group how they're going to make you live while you hellfire, you coulda probably shadowbolted your way through.

At this point I am not sure if the argument is whether warlocks can AoE better than mages or if people are just arguing that hellfire is useless altogether.

As a priest I have seen hellfire used effectively in every single casual end game instance (UBRS, LBRS, Strath, Scarlet, etc). Hellfire is also used in the hardest PvE encounter in the game currently, Nefarian. To say that it is useless is flat out wrong.

5 manned Scholomance last night with two druids (one tanking, me healing), mage, warlock, and a rogue. Was great fun.

I'll be running MC tonight and completing the MC quest to get that +15 Fire Resist ring, which should put my unbuffed fire resist around 100.

Haha. I'd love for a group to ask me to use Hellfire just so I could tell them to kiss my ass. I am not committing suicide because they couldn't find a mage. Now if I pull aggro using Rain of Fire and die, then that is different.

The main argument is that Hellfire is the best AoE in the game when it simply isn't.

My argument is that Hellfire is worthless and I'll believe this till the day I quit wow. You're always better off using RoF and saving heals for people that are far more important to the group then you.

I like the Blastwave-> Frost Nova-> back off, and Flamestrike->CoC->PoM+Flamestrike->AE, AE, AE etc personally.

I challenge a warlock to put out that much AoE damage while still managing to keep himself out of harms reach for most of it.

Hellfire is most useful in PVP instances. If you walk your warlock into a tight group of around 10, sac your VW, use your spell stone, use your healthstone, drop some potions, firstaid, get some priest healing, etc... (there are lots of ways to stay alive, but it take pratice) you can do tens of thousands of points of damage in just a few seconds. Sure, you might die if you and your group aren't very well praticed fir this sort of thing, but guess what... you be one player down while they'll be eight. Hellfire isn't a spell that you spam, but the proper application will win you a battle. It's really great for graveyard defense.

You are completely incorrect. Don't forget the fact that you'll be going into an BG instance without using a staff in order to use a spellstone (some warlocks have good swords, yes) or the fact that you'd get sapped, feared, seduced, or other players would just walk away from you and wait till you're done farting up a storm before killing your now very mana and escape ability deprived ass.

This is infact the worst warlock pvp strategy I've heard all week and it sort of makes me wonder if you've actually ever tried hellfire in PVP. The only acceptable instance I can think of for hellfire is an occasional burst to ferret out rogues and you could do that only if you have max mana as its an expensive spell. You're much better off using RoF from a distance, especially in AB where its a good spell to keep your node from getting capped by anything except a paladin.

I've seen the few very talented warlocks with the proper talent build pull this off. Keep in mind that hellfire isn't a general use spell. It is only good in very specific situations and in those situations it's devestating. With the stun effect of pyroclasm, only a few players will be able to walk off and thanks to destructive reach, they'll have that much farther to walk. This spell takes planning and forethought to use, but it can be used effectively. For general AoE, mages win uncontested. However, every now and then, you need a nuke and hellfire has the potential to inflict more damage per second per unit area than any other spell in the game. It takes talent to pull off well, but it can be done. Truth be told, you sould have self sacrifice in mide when you use it, but it can turn the tide. Hellfire isn't part of a PVP strategy, it's a tool avaliable for capitalizing on specific situations that you can really plan for.

i'm not going to step into the argument because I personally only have a paladin and a priest...

i'd just like to say that I  MetalRed b/c he's the only mage I've ever partied with that I would characterize as being "damn good" at his class. And I've also only pvp'd against one horde mage that I would put on the same level.
