Frozen glaze covering everything here just south of downtown, including roads. There's a texture to the road ice though, so it's possible to drive on it, but probably not ideal
Currently 27°F, which is surprising - I thought today was going to stay in the low 30s? 1/22/2016 8:38:55 AM |

forecast has been updated to no snow today, all freezing rain with a little sleet mixed in. The major rain that was forecast for today is now pushed to this evening when temps will be only slightly above freezing, so no significant melting expected (rain will still melt ice in below freezing temps because of the latent heat, but i don't think the rain will last long enough for much of a net melting effect)
forecast for tomorrow is <0.5" snow with maybe a tiny bit of freezing drizzle

^That answer depends greatly on the condition of your tires.
I'm probably going to go out for a bit later this evening. FWD car, LSD and less than 10k miles on my all season tires. 1/22/2016 11:18:05 AM |

Not sure about Hillsborough st but in general around downtown it's just slushy, but slick in areas. What are you driving? I wouldn't be concerned driving 2 blocks in a FWD or AWD/4WD but RWD might be exciting if you are not experienced dealing with it. If you are only 2 blocks though, why not walk? 1/22/2016 11:19:51 AM |

Avent ferry is pretty slick. Mostly snow cover, I don't think it's been brined. Centennial parkway is pretty bad.
Gorman from tryon to avent is better. Looks like it's been brined. Still need to be careful on the hill.
Supposed to get worse and have the heaviest precip starting at one.

I just drove around my neighborhood for 5 minutes. 100% untreated roads. And grip is pretty good. Most of the road surface is a hard slush. But acceleration, braking and steering all fairly solid.
Had a good time laughing at someone else driving around in a Durango (spotted them several times while driving). They were rolling along at roughly WALKING speed. LMAO 1/22/2016 12:22:15 PM |

temp is actually rising tonight and should be slightly above freezing, tomorrow early AM it will drop a bit and hover around freezing through the day. We will have a band of regular rain about 10PM that will wash some of this away. The roads are already in pretty good condition, they will probably be fine tomorrow and the back end snow that we will get will just be a trace. Risk of power outages pretty low for our area.

It's 1.8 miles and I don't have much in the way of winter weather gear at my condo (it's at my parent's place). I'm coming from the CAM area. I drive a 335i so it's RWD but the tires are brand new. I've driven in the snow with it before but rear wheel is always sketchy. Out my window I don't see any cars - there are some tracks so I was just wondering how much is truly ice downtown.1/22/2016 12:30:32 PM |

If your car has summer performance tires I would say definitely don't drive in this weather. Doesn't matter how new they are they're horrible in this. 1/22/2016 12:32:57 PM |
dtownral Suspended 26632 Posts user info edit post |
I would not recommend taking your 335. You would probably be mostly fine with all-season tires, but there are a few spots slick enough that your back end could step out maybe even enough to rub a curb 1/22/2016 12:41:27 PM |

These conditions are perfect for FWD. I can get my golf pretty sideways before the stability control says no more powr. Even when it's off, it's on . It does a real good job controlling a drift with the differential braking, but it will only allow a medium slip angle before it cuts throttle. Gotta ride that threshold and it's a blast. 1/22/2016 12:55:50 PM |

I drive on ice and snow every weekend. Don't drive a RWD car unless you have at least all season tires and I'd be wary about even that. Ice is no joke. I see huge dually RWD trucks with huge tires stuck on main roads here pretty often. In fact on interstate 70 here you're legally required to have snow tires if you aren't driving a AWD/4WD when it's snowing.
If you have a FWD car though go to a parking lot covered in ice and lock your parking brake and put cafeteria trays under your rear wheels then have some fun.

SW Charlotte not too bad. About .5" of slush, but cars are compacting it into a textured sheet of ice. Haven't gone out to the main roads to see, but I imagine they are all fine and clear 1/22/2016 1:09:12 PM |

I'm not aware of any dually FWD trucks
Thing is 4wd will have more go, but the same amount of whoa. If you can't get moving, maybe it's best that you don't 1/22/2016 1:09:40 PM |

You'll obviously get a lot more traction with AWD/4WD. I've driven both FWD and AWD cars with snow tires and I'd take a FWD car with snow tires over an AWD car with summer/even all season tires but best is obviously AWD with snow tires.1/22/2016 1:12:58 PM |

Definitely. Although AWD with good all season tires versus FWD with snow tires depends on the conditions. I'd usually take an AWD vehicle with good all season tires over a FWD car with snow tires simply because you get more control and traction in the driving I'm doing (off road, very hilly, etc). If you're driving on flat ground without a lot of snow (just ice) then 4 good snow tires might be a better choice. 1/22/2016 1:41:02 PM |
