This man is a brilliant politician and has completely played the MSM. I think he is completely divisive and an awful leader, but here is what he has accomplished while "wasting time" talking about sports:

- Put those against him in a position to defend athletes who are "disrespecting" the flag
- Distracted from a new travel ban and the failure of another GOP health care bill.

What are we talking about today? You can hate his methods (which most of America does) but you have to recognize that Trump knows what he is trying to accomplish.

I would disagree that its actually distracting from the real issues going on, but thats probably because I don't just watch fox/cnn or (pick your sensationalist dog-whistle news org).

The problem I have with that opinion is whatever he's accomplished with this NFL shit is completely fleeting and temporary. Trump may feel like he "won" for a day or two, but at the end of the day he continued to alienate more and more of the country (including well loved athletes who were mostly quiet previously) and his travel ban and the healthcare bill will still be miserable failures just like the previous iterations.

He's accomplished nothing except maybe a week of him feeling like he won the new cycle. The saddest part is that winning the new cycle is far and away this administrations number 1 priority.

Trump has decided what everyone will talk about each day about for almost 2 years. He forces liberals to talk about things that will make the alt right more passionate and make regular conservatives more willing to vote for him as the lesser of two evils.

To a lot of conservatives who hate Trump, 2020 just became idiot trump vs people who disrespect our flag/military/country.

Well you are just a special unique flower. But the rest of the country does get their news from MSM (which includes Fox and CNN).

^^,^ Completely agree. However, speaking for conservatives who did not vote for Trump, this kind of stuff continues to push usaway from voting for him in the next election. It's up to the Dem's not to fuck it up like they did by nominating Hillary.

I prefer the term snowflake.

You don't have to look very far to get decent coverage of whats going on. That's just not reflected in what people talk about (facebook, twitter, etc) because its easier to argue about a football team than health care.

I said it on the last page but since one or two of you insist on making the same point...if his intention was to distract from healthcare why was he tweeting about that subject in the middle of all this?

This is a very small and largely irrelevant number. Most GOP and conservatives fell in line and will again. No question.

I do wonder if it affects the black turnout though when he goes down the culture war path. If Clinton turned out African American voters she wins.

Because it makes me feel better to think that he has some ulterior motive and is not just some cranky old man screaming at people to get off his lawn.

Also, it's not about what he's talking about. Its what the MSM is talking about. He knows exactly how to manipulate them.

I mean, it probably would play well for his base if he had liberals rounded up and gassed too. Perhaps arguing the degree to which he fires up his base is the wrong way to look at things?

To be fair, the more time he spends on this the less time he actually tries to govern which is partly why the GOP controlled Congress has been a dumpster fire so far.

Considering Trump's margin of victory, D's should not consider any voting class irrelevant. And most GOP fell in line because the alternative (Hillary) was not a better option. Don't try to shift the blame of you losing to the party that won.

http://www.cnn.com/2017/09/25/politics/north-korea-fm-us-bombers/index.html

Quote :
"Washington (CNN)

North Korea's Foreign Minister Ri Yong Ho on Monday accused US President Donald Trump of declaring war on his country by tweeting over the weekend that North Korea "won't be around much longer."

"Last weekend Trump claimed that our leadership wouldn't be around much longer and declared a war on our country," Ri said, according to an official translation of his remarks to reporters in New York.

"Since the United States declared war on our country, we will have every right to make all self-defensive counter measures, including the right to shoot down the United States strategic bombers at any time even when they are not yet inside the aerospace border of our country," Ri said."

To clarify here, it doesn't matter whether we declared war or not. All that matters is what North Korea perceives and how they act based on that perception. This is why it is so dangerous how our President is acting.

the whole, “he’s brilliant because it distracts from x” line of thinking has got to go

he’s always tweeted like this. he has no impulse control. it’s a simple as that.

a monkey who throws its shit at you isn’t a brilliant politician

Personally I think people who hold Trump to the standard of “did it please his base?” are the people with no credibility, not those who make dumb throwaway jokes on TWW.

Quote :

Is that what I was doing? I thought I was responding to someone who said Trump was pushing away conservative voters who, almost wholly, will still vote for him against Democrat X.

Because it doesn't matter. People don't actually care all that much about healthcare, unless they are directly affected by it. Congress and Trump have succeeded in making Obamacare sound like this impossibly complicated curse that will never be able to be solved, which is precisely why all these failed attempts to repeal it don't even really matter that much to Trump's base or anyone who's been paying minimal attention to it. It's Obama's fault- not an incompetent Congress who can't seem to get rid of it. He's got nothing to lose by throwing out a few tweets about it, while completely engaging the national audience about fucking football and the national anthem. I don't think it's a brilliant tactic at all, because all it does is buy him a few days of distracting headlines, but this diversionary tactic isn't new at all. It plays out perfectly with his strategy that he's used since he got elected: confuse the public as much as possible, but be sure you have something for them to get angry about and fight over.

That’s fair if the standard for being a great politician doesn’t include actually governing. I guess that’s the standard Trump would like too because he doesn’t give a shit about the country, the people in it or anything else that isn’t him winning.

[Edited on September 25, 2017 at 2:43 PM. Reason : And I agree he’s great at distraction — but the first post on this page called a great “politician”]

If the bar is set so low that being "EFFECTIVE" means riling people up and pitting them against one another to avoid actually implementing any sort of meaningful policy, why yes, Trump is quite effective at it.

I mean Bush managed to scrape by on technicality to be elected and parlayed it into approval ratings in the 90s (granted thanks to 9/11). Seems more effectual that Trump to me..

Yes, the bar for this president is that low. This is not a controversial statement. Nobody really expects him to govern anything except for his re-election.

I suspect he never wanted to support him. His base never did. Probably was a wink at McConell. He tries to play the game but he just is too lazy and uncaring unless it lines his own pocket to do it properly.

The thing is. the president usually gets blame or credit for hurricane response. When it went well, he got a huge bump even though he didnt do it but now that the PR response has been a massive failure, hes trying to make sure the blame doesn't go to him.

and lets not pretend the country didnt consider them 2nd class citizens before Trump...

Water. big water, ocean water?

Is he retarded? More comical verbal shit from him:

https://www.facebook.com/vicenews/videos/vb.235852889908002/882079081952043

Definitely watch!

These two comments perfectly sum it up:

Quote :
"In his defense, I'm sure half his voters thought Puerto Rico was attached to Mexico. He was just clarifying it for them."

Quote :
"HE probably thought it was attached to Mexico and one of his staff pointed out it wasn't, right before the speech! He was so amazed at the information he felt the need to share it with everyone."

Quote :
"I demand to see his grade 2 report card there is no way he passed. This should be the new Obama’s birth certificate scandal."

Quote :
"Sometimes islands are in kitchens. Big kitchens, with so many of the best pans, and I have a lot of pans. Everybody that I know, and I know so many people, the best people, they have islands in their kitchen, too."

Quote :
"Facebook needs to include an eye roll emoji now that Trump is in office because that's the only response I seem to have other than anger when it comes to him."

Quote :
"Puerto Rico is part of the fucking USA. THEREFORE, saying that they can't recover on their own is ridiculous. THEY SHOULDN'T EVEN HAVE TO TRY TO."
