I just finished ethics today, WHAT FUN. One of the questions was "What are the Four C's from Lawyer's Mutual (malpractice insurance company)"

insurance tomorrow and i am half a lawyer. the disqusting thing is that i start clerking on Monday.

how do the 1Ls feel now that htey are done?

they are semi selective. You have to be able to demonstrate some real desire to serve the public. They really key on that.

well i pretty much think i failed my property exam, however, EVERYONE thinks that, so the curve should help me out alot.

tomorrow is civ pro, then torts on monday. i'm not too worried; civ pro is open source, and torts hasn't been too difficult thus far.

the liklihood of me getting in those over wake are better.

i have a 2.58 overall 3.3 in major, plus i like charlotte better than winston...

charlotte i can start in the spring 08, go part time, etc

^its best for your career to go to either utenn or wake (based on your list). new schools do not have the alumni network (or the reputation for producing quality lawyers) of established schools, which will make it much harder for you to get a job coming out of school.

honestly i dont think its going to really matter where i get a JD from, any new lawyer has to start at the bottom no matter where they graduate from. i also dont plan on moving to a big town or a large firm, i like the more personal approach of a smaller firm. id also like to eventually start my own firm, but thanks for the advice partial

^ yeah but you also have to remember that if you don't go to an accredited school you may not be able to sit for the bar exam. i highly recommend you look towards going to an accredited school if you are serious about becoming a lawyer.

Does anyone else like to bullet everything after going through law school?

Back on topic, consider:

-If you are interested in starting in the Spring, consider stetson. I would not let a spring term be a factor in what law school you go to.

-Unaccredited schools do not qualify for federal funding. You will be borrowing $26k privately at 8% (if you have good credit). Add another 10K a year for living expenses and it adds up quickly.

-Small firms are also picky about who they hire and you will need a substantial loan to begin your own practice (law school debt will be a factor, live cheaply). Most firms do not openly search for an associate to hire and give preference to graduates of their law school.

-Huge risk if the school does not get accredited. When I applied to school, I was clueless about the aba/the bar/job availability/small firm issues. I thought it was just like college where it was ok to go to the safety school, just to be going to law school.

-A decent paying small firm job can be hard to land and you need to realize that you could only make $35-40K a year with a JD in private practice and 100k of debt.

As far as I know, Elon has both Stafford and Plus government loan programs. I don't know if that's the exception or the rule.

In any case, treat your choice like a business decision. Figure out how much it'll cost you in loans, then see if you can lay out a realistic plan after graduation to pay them down. Every school, there are employment options that'll do it. However, not every school will realistically open up every option. If the options don't look appealing, don't go. Work for a few years to get some interesting experience on your application; a lot of schools seem to be fond of students with some work experience.

I work in HR at a very large and successful law firm that has quite a few offices in the US & Europe (three offices in NC)- if anyone is interested in interning or looking for a job after law school, shoot me a resume.

LSU is basically the top law school in LA. Thus, they place a lot of people in good jobs throughout the state. I was down there doing some pro bono work last year and it seemed like everyone I talked to graduated from LSU. It is a good school, I think they are tier 2, so not that tough to get into.

I just read through the whole thread, and pat law was mentioned a few times but nothing in depth

Is anyone aiming their career towards this?

I've been out of school for about 7 months now (at an Engineering firm now), and am considering working at the patent office. They would pay for law school after a year of working, and then you could become a patent lawyer. Has anyone attempted this? Do you know anyone that has done it?

a friend of mine is doing it. he already has a job lined up, and from what i've noticed you really have a leg up on the the jobs. basically when you look for jobs it seems like half are restricted because you have to have an engineering background. however, my friend also says that the material is pretty miserable. hope that helps

i still only have one grade in and classes resume monday. it's going to be weird if i have to start a new semester without knowing how well i did the previous semester.

yeah, it stinks to not have grades up. We got our final Fall 1L grades on the day to quit and get your refund. It takes forever to grade.

Just dont think about it and give it your best. You can raise your GPA dramatically if you have a great spring semester.

As for Pat Law, most firms want three years experience (on eattorney). It sounds like you have walked into a good deal with this company. Talk to another patent attorney for the firm about spending a few weeks working with him. You can test it out and determine if its something you would like to do.

Any of you 2 and 3L's have any good advice about securing an internship as a 1L?

Unfortunately, I don't come from a background where my Dad can give me a job, and most people that I know that already have an internship are of this type.

^^^, yeah i'd go talk to career services or if your school uses eattorney. Also if getting paid is not an issue looking at bigger cities there are always places that are hiring.

^^^^ take any kind of job you can at a law firm (courier, paralegal, secretary) and make sure they know youre in law school. that always helps get your foot in the door at places, especially if youre not top in the class or you dont have many contacts in the area...
