Even with a grad school GPA of more than 3.5?

I was told by some other students with Masters that those are not even really considered in your acceptance process that much.

If it was between you and some other kid with similar undergraduate grades and LSAT scores, then maybe they would allow you in over him.

Mostly LSAT and undergraduate grades are evaluated.

If it was a masters in engineering or some other science, that would greatly benefit you because of the high demand for attorneys with scientific backgrounds, but not so much a communications masters.

according to the dean of student affairs here, a masters in anything is only going to help your chances of getting in.

Some (many?) schools will form some manner of admissions index based on your LSAT score and undergrad GPA. Your graduate GPA will not be included there. So, you'll need a either a high LSAT or a school that values LSAT much more than GPA. Otherwise, you may not even make it to a full application review.

Graduate work will generally count similar to work experience. It's something that adds to the breadth of the class, which is highly valued. But it doesn't go into the screening process, nor the statistics that affect rankings.

I would note that some graduate programs have a reputation for terribly inflated GPAs, where As are the norm, and Cs are failing. In my graduate program, 3.5 would have been below average.

^everything he said is correct. your graduate work will be considered, but ugrad gpa is still more important. your graduate work adds "diversity" to the class, but at top schools its not going to offset a really low gpa. those schools have large applicant pools and will be able to find a student with both a high ugrad gpa and graduate work.

would like some input.

I got accepted to alabama- full scholarship offer for first year, contingent in other years on top 25% of class.
accepted to south carolina - 13k in scholarship for first year only, making it 20k a year
accepted to wake forest - no scholarship money
waitlisted at georgia
havent heard from NCCU

I am very interested in free schooling, however the fact that wake is in NC is also appealing. Anybody have experiences at either school and any advice?

^ What do you want to do post-graduation, and just as importantly, where? The schools you list have stronger in-state reputations, so if you want to remain in the state they are located in, things will be easier for you.

If you think you might want a lower-paying career, pick on cost. If you're aiming for higher-paying work, pick on relevant prestige.

^ I agree, but I'm biased (3L at Wake).

But go to school in the state where you want to practice- makes it way easier to network, interview, etc.

I go to wake. It blows. But, we have scuttlebutt out the scuttlebutt.

I regularly think to myself, "I need more time with each prof, with fewer people," even though we supposedly have a fantastic faculty:student ratio. So I can't imagine what it would be like going to a dramatically larger school. That would totally suck. This is obtuse stuff. I knew the law was bizarre, but you wouldn't believe how messed up it is. Conlaw in particular. We've only recently arrived at the level of protection of rights you'd think you always had. But then, I was an engineering major and didn't pay attention to history in high school, so I have caught an bucketload of "o rly?" 's this semester

i personally love wake. you get out of it what you put in, and fuck if i'd ever go to a school where the 1L class is over 400 people. i found all my profs to be accessible, and have never had a hard time talking to any of them. but dan is right. con law blows donkey dick, and i have parker.

our civ pro final is open note, open book

however, you're an idiot if you try to rely on your books and notes, because it's designed to where you don't have time to go through them

it would be nice to at least have that option considering all the rules we have to know. if i was unsure of a question or something about a rule, i'll bet i could figure out pretty quickly with my rules of civil procedure book in front of me

^you'd think so, but that's like saying you'd like to have the DMV road signs handbook with you on your road test when you were first getting your drivers' license. If you need to look, you're dead. Or at least you'd fail.

^^ if you don't know which rule you're looking for i can see your point. we had midterms here and i remember one question in particular where i couldn't remember the exact wording of rule 12(h) regarding which defenses were waived if not raised in a party's answer. if i had my book in front of me, no problem because i knew exactly where to look. same goes for if you were just thinking about dates a person has to serve a complaint like in rule 4(m). i have a good working knowledge of all the rules i need to know, but sometimes the specifics can be a little hard to remember. thats when having your rule book in front of you would really come in handy. i mean, when we're out there practicing law, we aren't going to be expected to recall all this info from memory. stands to reason we shouldn't have to on the exam either. but thats law school for you

Practicing law closed book is a recipe for malpractice. I've had one of six exams as closed book; open book isn't easier, it's just different. In my opinion, it lets you make a more efficient mental index and concentrate on understanding how to apply concepts. But you still need to know the boundaries of the rules, or you'll never be able to spot all of the issues to discuss on a problem.

^^^^ Every rules based course I have taken in school had an open book or open rule book final. Civ Pro, Crim Pro, Evidence, Professional Responsibility. Having the rules in front of you doesnt tell you how, when and why to apply them

We do not have open book/note exams. I imagine I would not turn into a zombie for a month if we did have them. I think not having your notes develops your brain analytically.

I love rule based classes.

we just had our civ pro final today. it was closed book/notes. despite the ridiculous amount of rules we had to know, i feel i did ok. the only thing i would've used my book for was the question that specifically asked us "which is the correct wording of the affadavit under 56(e)" and a few that wanted us to know the number of days a lawyer/party had to respond to various things. glad that one is over with!

my first exam is next friday... property. then contracts the next thurs, then contracts the following monday, and then civ pro on that wednesday.... so.... it's gonna be a while.... but then I get to attempt to do an independent research project this summer on the NHTSA, and attempt to study for the patent bar... somehow I don't think both are going to happen...

I'm a rising 1L next year, and was curious how much debt everyone is accruing? I will most likely have to borrow the bulk of my law school attendance and was wondering if everyone else was having to do the same.

it really depends on where you're going. private schools will of course cost more, plus you're in a professional school now so expect to be in a lot of debt by the end of your 3L year if you have to borrow it all. i wouldn't let something like that bother you though, you'll be able to pay it back. right now the only thing you need to be worrying about is surviving your 1L year
