~first of all, please don't flame me for dreaming~
Bill Cowher is an analyst who, like Gottfried, may prefer to get back into coaching. He lives in NC. He played for NC state. He is not too old. He attended the UVa game, and witnessed a team with no motivation: a coaching failure. Pretty sure his daughter is a freshmen here. It is not so entirely ridiculous that it hasn't been mentioned in the sports press for over a decade. Would Yow really have let go of someone like TOB before the bowl game if she didn't already have a better replacement in her sights.

The answer to this question is an obvious "yes." There is no reason to lose over a month of potential coach searching time waiting around until after a bowl game. Like Yow said in her presser, there are a lot of jobs open now and more to come in the near future. Why miss out on potential candidates that may be snapped up by other schools while you sit on your hands waiting for a lame duck coach to play a bowl game.
No, it's not the "nice" thing to do, but that's the unfortunate reality of high-revenue college sports nowadays. It's the same reason why Carolina fired Bunting mid-season, so they could get a jump on their coaching search and beat other schools to the punch Butch.11/26/2012 2:24:59 PM |

What makes anyone think DY wants Cowher? She wants someone that can recruit. I know Cowher is a big name and can coach his ass off, but can he recruit worth a damn. And the argument of "Oh his name will bring people" or "He just has to show the Super Bowl ring" are reasonable. She wants a recruiter who is involved in the process through out, and not someone like O'Brien who comes in and closes and relies on his staff. I completely foresee that is what Cowher would do. Even if Cowher wants the job, I don't think DY would even entertain the idea. 11/26/2012 2:46:19 PM |

Either going one of two ways.
Alabamas game this week sets the timeline or availability of Smart. We would want them to lose to UGA this weekend for a few reasons 1.) less time with alabama as def coac 2.) no chance of Richt takeover talk 3.) logical transition to head coach after loss.
If Smart turns it down...
we will go with a bevvy of solid coaches/coordinators. one decent head coach at the helm but with good OFF and DEF coordinators I.e. LA Tech, Kent State current coordinators and a spectacular recruiter.
pay a up and coming big name or pay lots of good assistants. Thats the choice Yow has presented herself and the committee with. 11/26/2012 2:53:10 PM |

DY makes a point to say that TOB's recruiting was a factor to why he was "released". So let's go hire a coach who has zero recruiting experience. Yes I'm dead serious. DY would not hire Cowher if he came knocking at the door.

Quote : | "This is from an insider article that ranked NC State as the #3 job available to win right away, based on polling former coaches 3. North Carolina State Wolfpack Current coach: Tom O'Brien | Current record: 5-4 This is the only school on this list with a winning record and, quite frankly, wasn't on my "Would you take this job?" list when I started calling around. But nearly everyone I talked to brought it up as a position they expected to be opening, and one they would salivate over. "Have you seen the facilities in Raleigh?" a West Coast coordinator asked. "If you were at that stadium 15 years ago and then you were there over the last year, then you can see how committed they are to the program. That fan base is a sleeping football giant. And there is a ton of talent in North Carolina that leaves every year. O'Brien is a good X's and O's guy but he's never taken to recruiting. Get a real recruiter in there and he would mop up." From the outside, the idea of taking an ACC job might seem like the wrong direction. But everyone I talked to said the opposite -- as long as it's the right ACC job. "That conference is ripe for the picking," the West Coast coordinator continued. "It would take no time at all to start racking up big numbers and getting BCS berths. You can make a hell of a living doing that. Just ask Virginia Tech. NC State is the kind of place that can get to that level, and in a hurry. The other ACC jobs that might be out there -- Boston College and Maryland -- they're a hundred miles behind State."" |
Don't know if this is true but this is from a comment in the HD ESPN article FWIW. Would be interested in finding the insider article that is referenced

About Nick Saban, I think coaching trees are important here. Lets try hiring someone who has a history of having his staff have good head coaching tenures, so that there is continuity for future head coaches here at State
From Wiki
Quote : | "Over the years, former assistant coaches under Saban have gone on to take head coaching position at FBS schools. Most notably from Saban's LSU tenure are Jimbo Fisher, Will Muschamp, Mike Haywood and Derek Dooley. Bobby Williams, current assistant coach at Alabama took over at Michigan State after Saban left for LSU. Another assistant from his time at Michigan State University, Mark Dantonio, is currently MSU's Head Coach. Jim McElwain, Saban's offensive coordinator at Alabama from 2008 through 2011, was named head coach at Colorado State University on December 13, 2011. Saban himself is from the Bill Belichick coaching tree, having worked as his defensive coordinator during Belichick's Cleveland tenure." |
How about going for Bill Belichick?
