if anyone is unclear..
Quote : | "Microsoft would really, really like it, I’m guessing, if every Xbox One owner did this: Instead of plugging your cable box into your television via HDMI, you can just plug it right into the back of the Xbox One instead. Once you enter your cable company’s info into the Xbox One, it’ll have a channel guide all set up, and you can use Xbox One (and voice commands) to change the channel and search for programming.
You actually should be able to yell “Xbox, watch Pawn Stars” and have it bring up Pawn Stars if it’s currently playing (which it always is). How does it manage this witchcraft? It searches its own guide for the show, figures out what channel it’s on, then uses the Kinect to blast an IR signal into the room which your cable box will pick up on, and flip the channel." |

i really wish console games were cheaper. the older i get, the cheaper i get. all these f2p computer games and steam sales makes it so hard to want to play (newer) console games.
that said, the tv integration does sound pretty exciting here. 11/21/2013 10:44:49 AM |

on the flipside. console games do have resale value, especially if you buy it, play through it, and sell it within a month or so of release. 11/21/2013 11:37:52 AM |

not so fast:

the playstation family has actually gotten cheaper with each release, but the xbox has gone up.
also, anyone know if the DVR of your cable box will work with the xbox? it doesnt seem like anyone has a clear answer. this will pretty much be the factor that decides if i plug my tv into it. i rarely watch live tv unless it is sports related. 11/21/2013 12:19:58 PM |

From what I have read, the DVR won't work with the xbox (can't ask it to record or watch recorded shows), but the cable box functionality works (basic channel changing and guide). 11/21/2013 1:14:42 PM |

i think everyone is confused. here is what i found:
Quote : | "One nice part of Xbox One is that the traditional television remote still works just as before, without switching inputs — bringing up DVR recordings from the cable box (DVR functionality is not a native Xbox One capability), changing channels and doing everything else on the TV for anyone who prefers to keep things old-school." |
http://www.geekwire.com/2013/geekwire-xbox-review/
So the remote from TWC will still work like it does now?11/21/2013 1:25:59 PM |
CarZin patent pending 10527 Posts user info edit post |
It is a pass through. It is not going to disrupt ANYTHING that your current DVR does. It just won't be able to do everything through the xbox that you can do with the DVR remote.
No worries. Just use your DVR remote as your normally do when you need to. But a lot of the basic functions can be done without the remote at all. Will be nice when I am eating food, and I don't want to pick up a remote. 'Xbox Pause' 11/21/2013 1:36:28 PM |

does any cable/satellite/uverse provider have an HDMI-CEC compatible box? the reason I ask is because :
Quote : | "It is a pass through. It is not going to disrupt ANYTHING that your current DVR does. It just won't be able to do everything through the xbox that you can do with the DVR remote." |
this is correct but fails to mention that the xbox one doesn't know what your cable box or DVR is doing without HDMI-CEC. Basically your xbox one is a giant universal remote with a built-in guide.
If you use your cable/satellite remote to change the channel then your xbox one will not realize you are on a different channel. Shouldn't be a huge deal, you may just see your one guide show you on a different channel than you are but if you tell it to go to HBO it will still change to the correct channel.11/21/2013 2:26:30 PM |

It's a pass through, but its not a straight hardware pass through. It actually decodes the video signal, adds the Xbox UI to the video stream, and rencodes it before passing it back to output. It apparently degrades PQ and doesn't pass surround sound from your cable box. The latter will probably be fixed but it will always do something negative to the picture. 11/21/2013 2:33:56 PM |

I am well aware of the technology. I didn't mention it because it didn't seem relevant to the question. The comment was aimed at the xbox from preventing your DVR to work, while it doesn't.

Says who? I've seen absolutely nothing to suggest that it causes any quality issues except when you are doing split.
From CNET:
Surround sound: During the prerelease testing period, surround sound for TV pass-through was listed as a beta feature, but Microsoft says this will be fixed by launch.
Image quality: A few CNET editors suspected that the Xbox One might be softening TV image quality that it passed through, but I didn't notice it. Running Blu-ray test patterns through the Xbox One's HDMI input didn't reveal any issues.

Maybe it doesn't do anything to a 1080p test pattern, but output from a cable box is generally 720p/1080i. That's going to have to be decoded, processed, and scaled by the Xbox. There is no way the source signal won't be degraded by the time it reaches your TV. That's just common sense for anyone who knows anything about A/V hardware. There is no way a $500 piece of hardware is going to flawlessly deinterlace or scale video.

Quote : | "But while the ideas are great, the execution just isn’t there. For starters, passing my TiVo through the Xbox One darkened the picture and stripped the signal of its Dolby Digital audio encoding, taking away surround sound. There’s a beta option to transcode Dolby into DTS or PCM audio, but it didn’t seem to work for me, and Microsoft says it might cause additional video distortion with some cable boxes until it’s out of beta. If you have a home theater system, this is an immediate deal breaker; I wouldn’t let the Xbox One near your cable box until it can pass the signal unmolested." |

Well, I'll let you know what it looks like on my 65" HD screen tomorrow. Considering a ton of people have now reviewed it, and only a couple super anal people are saying something about it (probably the same pricks that are pissed off about 1080p), I'm not concerned. 11/21/2013 3:15:02 PM |

my logitech revue does the same thing, and it degrades the signal slightly
i'd suspect the xbone could do better than it though, what with years of advancements and much beefier hardware to work with 11/21/2013 3:17:11 PM |

BTW To state the obvious, if you find it does impact you TV signal, you can always run it without the pass through. You'd lose the voice command TV and integratopm but you could still use everything else. 11/21/2013 3:46:26 PM |
CarZin patent pending 10527 Posts user info edit post |
Actually, you might now even lose that. You may still be able to do things like change channels without having the pass through. I can't imagine it not working unless they've coded things to not work unless an HDMI signal is detected. It is just using an RF blaster (out of band)

You could probably change channels with your voice but you wouldn't have the guide.
You will probably never be able to actually watch DVR'd shows, but hopefully eventually (if not right out of the box) you will be able to schedule recordings with voice commands. It doesn't need to know what's on the DVR to IR blast the record button.

I was more just talking about not using it for TV anyway. If I have to fight with it to work well I'll probably consider just using it like my 360 until they and the cable companies are actually able to work together enough to enable the HDMI-CEC functionality. 11/21/2013 5:40:20 PM |
