Meh...I was against for a long time. I drink a ton of coffee and I always like having a pot to pour from.

But this one is at the office. I don't have a kitchen here and it's extremely convenient. Don't have to worry about washing out a pot or dealing with grinds and filters. I also drink a ton of coffee at the house in the morning so I don't need much here. It's usually a cup a day at the most.

So I'm definitely not a Keurig fanboy...but it works really well for my office set-up (microwave, mini-fridge, and keurig). I housed a 10-person deposition here three weeks ago and they acted like it was the fucking Ritz.

i get the convenience of it, and i'd probably be more likely to own one if i made a lot of money...but the main two issues I have with it are coffee quality and wastefulness. The quality thing I can slide on, after all even decent coffee is great coffee at 7am. But that's a lot of plastic going to the landfill

The coffee is better than that, assuming you get the right kind. But I wouldn't want one for my house either, as when I'm having a nice weekend brunch we'll put away most of a pot. I will, however, use the one in my office for the reasons jbrick mentioned--no cleanup, convenience, and no fuss about who's paying for the coffee amongst a 10 person office.

we have a keurig at home which i love - it's so nice to just make myself a cup of coffee when i am working from home than run out to starbucks and pay $3 for a cup of essentially the same thing.

we've been having some problems with our keurig - i think it got zapped during one of many storms we had this summer and if i push the button to brew, it pulls the water but then just sits idly. i end up having to turn the machine on and off multiple times and then finagle it until it finally brews my coffee. what should take 30 seconds sometimes takes 20 minutes

we go to do a preliminary test in production today for brand new functionality today, just for a quick smoke test. user goes through, enters the data, hits the OK button, nothing happens. we go through, check the error logs, and there's a message suggesting that our messaging layer has a permissions problem. We hunt down the server guys in charge of the messaging servers and ask them to verify our configuration settings, and they say that we are using the wrong password. We ask the how long it will take to change on their side, since we want to do the test right now, and they give us all this shit about making sure we use the right passwords, and how they send them out to us in emails and the least we can do is make sure we use the right stuff, blah blah blah, and how they can't just go changing passwords willy nilly like this in production, because they have to have all kinds of approvals and emergency exceptions and need 2 days lead time to make password changes, blah blah fucking blah. All the while, we know they are looking at a freaking grid of usernames and passwords with a freaking EDIT button right there that they can hit at a moment's notice.

My boss gets tired of this shit and just says "fuck it, we'll put out a beta build for these two fucking users with the config file change and we'll do the fucking test tomorrow. DAMN IT." We then get a little spiel from the messaging guys about how that's the right way to do shit and how it should be a lesson to make sure we get the right settings before we try to go live, blah blah blah. After that shit, we hang up the phone, and my boss slams his phone down as he hangs it up.

Five minutes later we get an odd email from the messaging server guys that goes something like this: "Uh, we noticed something strange on our end, and, uh, we went ahead and can fix the problem. There's no changes needed on your side, you'll be good to go in a few minutes." This can mean only one thing: they sent us the wrong fuckin password. So I go through my inbox, which I was gonna do anyway, cause I KNOW I asked them to verify our settings like two months ago before we went live (it has yet to be used while we iron out some kinks in testing. no one has edit privileges yet). Sure enough, I find the email where they sent it out and they gave us the wrong fucking password. I forwarded it to my boss and sat back and watched the show. This is why I save emails.

From the IT persepective, it's usually difficult to troubleshoot something you cannot make happen. If we can't reproduce it and the user can't reproduce it for us, the usual procedure is to tell the user to contact us by phone the next time it happens, and close the ticket until then. It's like when you take your car to the mechanic because it's making a funny noise, but it stops making the noise on the way to the shop.

It cracks me up how pissed off my coworker gets whenever people try to open her office door when it's closed. I agree it's annoying, especially since everyone here keeps their door open when they're not in a meeting or on the phone so a closed door should be a big hint to not disturb someone, but she seriously looks like she's going to start shooting people one day if they jiggle her door handle one too many times.

The labs here are open configuration, where we are separated by aisles. It's designed this way to foster knowledge and share ideas because each floor is designated for certain things, i.e cancer, diabetes, etc.

But the way it's designed encourages taking things without asking, because we share cabinets and fridges as well. It's become a problem for us, especially, because we are a well funded lab and others on the floor are mostly junior investigators. They don't want to spend unless they really have to.

It's like borrowing sugar from your next door neighbor. A few times is OK until you are able to get to the store, but we have said something because it has become so habitual. And it is still happening.

About 3 weeks ago, I hid s box of enzymes ( they are expensive). The guy came over this morning and asked what happened to it. I said, " I have no idea, I don't work with enzymes."

For a moment I felt bad and almost put it back, but then I asked my colleague if I should, he said, " Hell no!"

There is a stock room on campus. He should def take advantage of it and buy his own stuff!

Hmmm... Lets see.

1 hr meeting taking 1hr 35 minutes. 90% of the speaking time is divided between 2 people. One guy is just very very long winded and one guy just likes to hear himself talk and has nothing of any value to contribute.

The one guy who has nothing of value to say has the tendency to call you or bug you for 30 minutes at around 5 minutes before 5 PM (when I leave). But it's ok (in his mind), because his stupid ass gets to work at 6:45-7:00 AM. I get in at 8 AM. Meanwhile it pisses me off because I want to fucking leave, especially when it can wait until tomorrow.

If anyone holds a meeting, he spend 90% of the time talking. He will take a 10-20 minute meeting and turn it into a fucking hour as he re-iterates exactly what you said to begin with. However, he re-iterates it because he doesn't understand what you said to begin with and he has too much pride to ask you to explain, so he spends 30 minutes beating around the bush.

But I'm going to get my revenge. I made a nice excel spreadsheet that creates a theoretical model of a part of a process (hopefully, I'm still working on verifying its accuracy and repeatability). Now, this model could certainly help him, but it is his job to understand the model, not just punch fucking numbers in and get something that he doesn't understand how it got it to begin with. So, he asked me to just outright give it to him. I refused and told him that he needs to do it himself so that he understands. I said I would help him, but in the end he needs to create it because he needs to know how it works. I'm curious as to whether he'll put in the time to do it, or whether he'll beg me for it (if he took the time to do it, it should take 1-3 hours to do it depending on the level of help I provide him and how nice he wants the spreadsheet to be).
