While not an identical situation, saw a message that the NCSU voice mail system got brought down a couple of days ago because a telemarketer somehow managed to hit a misconfigured call manager. They inadvertently left a message that was not specifically directed to anyone's mailbox, so instead it was routed to every mailbox on the system. Server didn't like that too much.

At least you can't have a reply storm with voice mail.

My boss is getting close to just losing it. He's been a lab safety manager for the last 15 years or so, never takes vacations, works from approximately 3AM-10PM each day, and just gets shit on by everyone when something breaks down for an hour.

A couple recent stories:

He drops a package off at my office and says it needs to be shipped back to a vendor and gives me their UPS shipping account number. We normally ship FedEx and don't have any UPS shipping forms nearby, so I ask if these guys use FedEx. "No, no, we can ship UPS. Come with me." So we go up to our dept. office where packages come and go, and he's rummaging through drawers looking for forms and harassing all the office staff. "Every day I see people just leave UPS boxes here, but where are the shipping forms??? WHERE ARE THE GODDAMN SHIPPING FORMS!?" Don't know, but I just got a call from the vendor and he gave me their FedEx number, so we're good.

In a team meeting right before Thanksgiving, I tell him I'll be heading home Wednesday and coming back early Monday. "Oh ok, so you'll just be taking a couple days off. Isn't Thanksgiving on a Saturday this year?" Nope, 4th Thursday in November as far as I can remember. "Really? I never made that connection" O_o This man has a PhD in Physics and worked at Bell Labs.

He does a weekly safety orientation for new lab users at the same time each week. A student needs training, but can't get her schedule to mesh with his. "This girl's boss is hounding me to get her trained, but she's always busy with class or sonority recruiting or volunteering or some other social butterfly stuff." Sonority? He then mentions sonority about 10 more times.

I know a few people like that. There are two types really, the kind that never payed attention to normal things and just focused on whatever they found fascinating, or the people who used to work with chemicals before we knew they were dangerous lol (these are usually funnier)

I made a huge mistake that's going to set me back about 2 to 3 weeks for this particular experiment. I had the guy above me, who is like my supervisor take a look at my cells, and I can tell he's like " god wtf did you do?"

He says these cells can be used anymore, and he throws my plates of cells into the biohazard bin hard and obvious like it's the end of the world. As if he has never made a human error before. And he has, many times.

The one annoying thing is that when I'm done with a project, the client typically stops responding to emails about that project making it impossible for me to close it The REALLY annoying part is that typically I'm working on like 3 different things for the same person and they'll respond to other case emails. That or they'll try to just tag totally different things into a closed issue. I just want my metrics :'(
