LOL The lady who runs Amore's always scared me. She is pretty nice but I don't doubt if you cross her, she'll put a hit on your ass.

whoa, when did alfie's close? that was my favorite spot on hillsborough, and i was looking forward to hitting it up once i'm back in raleigh in a month... and cream and bean, too? damn, i've missed a lot in a year.

and it's not hillsborough st., but along the lines of eating establishments, i remember when you could get a real, sit-down steak dinner at the spot where the wolves' den is now.

It was run by University Dining and supposedly it was good. You got like one or two dinners there a month or something with your meal plan. When I got to State it was gone but Wolves den wasn't as crappy as it is now. You could actually order real full size pizzas that were freshly made instead of that stone willy's nonsense.

^^^^ 'twas called "the underground." you could get one meal a month (though apparently athletes didn't have limits.) there was usually a line and a wait of about 30 minutes. you had the choice of chicken, steak, or pasta i believe. (the pasta was the only place on campus that remotely tasted like pasta.)

^no more large pizzas? (i think the large ones were still stone willy.) i think we were able to get a few people and share the cost of the large across the cards. when it first switched to wolves', there were people who stood around waiting for someone to finish so they could bus the tables (like what was done at the underground.) people often took care of the trash themselves which i believe lead to the loss of waitstaff.

^ i was about to say that too - everybody thinks the Amore crew is italian. They're actually all from Syria.

And they're cool as shit. Anybody go to that party they had there about 2 years ago? It didn't end until like 4am, with $1 draft and $1 slices. It was great.

The old lady warms up if you fucking talk to her every damn time you go in there.

And when did alfies close down? What is that place now (besides being cursed to fail)?

It's still around--just moved to Mission Valley up by Ruckus and Cloos'.

Courtney's. I've been to the one on Maynard in Cary (which I think is still there) and it was pretty good.

Quote :
"Mitches (WITH the pool table and no liquor)"

Mitch's? No liquor? You've gotta be kidding me. Did he lose his license or something, or do you mean just beer and no hard stuff?
I'm guessing the pool table must have been in the back room.

I wrote a column in Technician about this when I was a photo staffer there. They threatened to sue Technician for defamation of character. I had to go with our Editor to meet with Pam Gerace, the Uni lawyer, and she laughed at the column nearly as much as the threat to sue. The letter was riddled with grammar and spelling errors. Tech did a story on Tony to make up for it, and he told the writer (not verbatim, since it wasn't recorded, "You tell that Mike if he ever comes in here, I'll kill him." I still have that letter, I should frame it.

Someone also mentioned Two Guys on this list, did they close down? Is Cream & Bean really gone? I work in Cary and never get to Campus anymore other than to visit the Manhattan Bagel across from Starbucks... I mean that New York Bagel across from Starbucks... I mean Q-Shack across from Starbucks... Wait, what Starbucks?

And man I used to LOVE Blue Moon BBQ. I remember the year we beat UNC at UNC (Archie's freshman year?) getting on the roof of Blue Moon to shoot the throng of revelers down below. Good times... good times... That was of course before I could tell the weather by how my right knee aches.

Las Margaritas circa 95/96. Think it was something else and then Colorados. They had some kick-ass quesadillas.

The State Shop between Eckerds/Papa Johns.

That McDonalds was great. Never could believe they couldn't stay in business.

Not on Hillsborough St per se, but is the 1911 Building C-store still run by the blind? I remember going there and not knowing that the lady was blind. I thought she was a little odd when she didn't see me place the dollar bill on the counter to pay for my coke

Oh yeah, remember when NCSU switched from Coke to Pepsi? That upset me to no end until (I think) my senior year again.

^^^ it is not a c-store and is not affiliated with university dining in any way. the same blind woman is still running it that has run it for at least the last 4 years or so. you can buy both pepsi/coke products there. it is all cash. fruit is also available there; i don't remember it being offered at most c-stores.

It wasn't that they weren't making money. McDonald's just decided that they didn't need to have two resteraunts so close together. And since the one on Western Blvd has a parking lot and drive-thru, it makes a lot more money.

Yeah and Kinko's used to be over where NY pizza expanded into. But that one is fairly recent. Man NY pizza used to be such a shit hole. You could barely pass someone in that hallway they called their "dining area."
