"Rush, have you looked at Sigma super zooms? like the 100-400 range? They've got so many new lenses in the past year to checkout that are very compact, light, good performance for little money. Are you planning on hiking/backpacking a lot because having a 6lbs lens in the pack tends to get heavy really quick, specially in rough terrain or climbing up hills. I took my 300 2.8, two bodies and a few other lenses with me to yellowstone and was a burden on long hikes; although pretty worth it for some shots (specially when I ran two miles to a remote waterfall to catch the sunset.)"

I've looked at them, but I'm really trying to stick to the faster lenses. I only saw a couple 2.8 zooms and they were just as pricey as the Nikons. We'll be spending four full days hiking so I'm definitely trying to keep it on the lighter end, but like you said, it is worth it to have. I'll be with two other people so we'll distribute the weight so it won't be like I will be adding a full 10+ lbs of gear in my bag. And all my other hiking gear is about as light as you can get. Right now I'm looking at taking the following with me: D90, 11-17 2.8, 18-105 4-5.6, 70-200 2.8, 300 2.8, 1.4TC. All together, that's right at 13 lbs of gear. When it gets closer to the trip, I might just say screw it and just use the 70-200 and 1.4tc. This will be my first backpacking trip since I got into photography so I'm really just looking for some suggestions.

two questions: anyone here ever do anything with the technician? i'd love to do some photography for them, pass some free time this next year.

and 2: i took this picture on a recent study abroad in mexico. not the greatest picture i've ever taken...but i feel like if someone can bring out the sunset in the background more, it'll look really cool

okay, talk to me about circular polarizing filters...i found a sunpak (cheap, i know) in box of a couple of filters i had set aside (some older orange and red nikon filters that the guy gave me when i bought the d40) and i'm not especially educated as to what this actually does, being circular, aside from reducing glare from water and such (i think)

is it worth using? in what situations would i use it? it mounts to the lens and then is able to spin (which i assume it's supposed to do)...why?

^ okay...so i leave a UV filter on all of my lenses figuring it's a cheap way to protect the lens itself (whether it really does anything or not is arguable, i know)...is a CPL something i could leave on the lens or should i remove it unless i have a specific need? i have one lens that i use mostly outside and so i could leave it on that one...but i use it inside, too, sometimes

buy a cheap pair of polarized sunglasses and wear them around for an idea of how it could affect photos. but you're definitely going to want to take it off at times.

i actually have a decent pair of polarized sunglasses and i wear them all the time...the only time i realize they're polarized when i'm NOT out on the water (or similar) is when i look at certain types of LED screens that suddenly show crazy rainbows

other than that, i DON'T really notice the difference...obviously the sunglasses darken everything, but i wouldn't think the polarizer would do that (i do realize that it will darken sky and such, though)

I took some pictures of the 4th of July fireworks that were set off in our street (got to fucking love South Carolina ).

This is the first time I had ever tried taking pictures of Fireworks. I've read about how to do it, and of course, I used the Bulb setting on the camera.

My favorite picture:

And the grand Finale:

I am making a mountain trip end of next week and our first stop is the zoo. I can't wait to do some animal shots there, and I really want to do some waterfall shots up there. Really excited about this trip for photography purposes. When I get some time I'll post some pics I shot of the Edenton fireworks over the bay.

Yeah I mainly liked the lighting in it. I kind of got lucky with the crop, but I've been finding I can get pretty decent shots in one or two tries without actually looking through the viewfinder now. Frees me up to get better angles for shots of kids.

As an aside I picked up one of those table top studio kits that comes with a couple stand mounted lights. It's like a giant softbox with different colored back drops that you put inside to take stock and product photos. Figure it will be worth some fun and I'm going to try to build up a large stock photo portfolio to try to make a few extra dollars off of the microstock sites.

^^^^^^ personally (and i am far from an expert), i think it's a bit too saturated...also, it looks like you created a layer of the female in front in order to work on her and now she looks separate from the male in the background (like she's been superimposed)

^To me it just looks like he used to low of an F-Stop and it began blurring out the lion in the background, but it didn't blur it enough to get that artistic look. But I do agree, I think its too saturated. The grass up front looks fake. Just personal opinion though.

i think just about everyone posts pics with exif data so if you want to find out all of the settings you easily can

if there is a particular picture that someone didn't you can probably ask that person

well i didn't see any on some of your safari pictures, nor Ronny's sweetwater one, nor the zoo one, so i'm just saying it would help as i know a lot of these pictures are edited or resized and lose the EXIF data

my bad - http://www.flickr.com/photos/30164326@N04/ will show the exif - for some reason the direct link to the picture on flickr doesn't show it - i never noticed that

finally going through the first day of pictures from the trip - my wife got in the way just a bit and i didn't want to crop it
