since we got a pretty good discussion going on here, I've got a question for ya'll.

I'm wanting to put one of those garage floor sealers/protection coatings on my new house garage before I change my oil and shit in there to make it all nasty like.

You think these coatings are worth the cash?

those epoxies? my old neighbor had one and said he could just mop up oil if he spilled some. not sure what brand he used though.

^that's my concern as well. i think they're nice for general use, but if you really tackle any major projects floors take a beating. i plan on just putting a good clear sealer on my floor.

there are some good commercial epoxies out ther that go on 1/8 to 1/4" thick that are tough as hell, we had that at my old shop in virginia, the only thing i ever did that chipped it was having a rockwell axle fall off a jack on a dump truck, and i dropped a hell of a lot of shit on it before that, if it isn't on new concrete, it needs to be media blasted and chemically seald first though

shit I'm not going to be doing anything heavy-duty in this garage. I just want to keep grease, oil, and resin from fucking up the floor.

My floor is great. I havent hurt it yet and I had a car in there on jackstands last week. PLus I store a car in there that leaks ATF, and I spilled some solvent in there once and didnt affect it at all. Well worth the $350 for the ucoatit.

Also, my floor was 12 years old and I didnt need to media blast it. A bonus of the ucoatit is you apply it while the floor is still wet, instead of having to wait for the shit to dry like with the home depot stuff.

I was planning to do my garage with that Home Depot stuff, but I might look at ucoatit instead. The HD stuff is only about $100 iirc.

foundation and slab are annoyingly slow, we dont have much time to work on it, the framing will take no time, maybe a weekend at the longest

I'm well aware of that . . . I've done my fair share of shit like this. Notice the face?

But concrete blocks should go pretty fast too. Set the corners, then its just layin to the line which shouldn't be more than 30 seconds per block. Although I guess that time is for seomeone who does a lot of masonry work . . . which I used to do.

but it's looking good for a part time project, especially with this heat.

a few hours a night after dark here and there takes some time, could probably knock it out in a day or so if we had time, backfilling and compacting is gonna be a bitch too, to get done in a day even with a loader and compacter, 25 tons of fill dirt and 19 tons of gravel are gonna have to go down next

I just saw an Ad the other day for a 25'x30' steel garage prefab for $4995. I figure this is running yall a couple grand probably?

The convenience of steel buildings is nice, but they don't add value to a home the way a stick built will.
